News and Notes

Just wanted to mention the 3-year old filly Qualia (Saarland - Amalake by Meadowlake), who won her first start at Belmont, after being scratched out of what seemed like a million races. I guess the wait was worth it, because she won by 4. Watch the Replay.

Hollinger Impresses in the Cup and Saucer

Hollinger (Black Minnaloushe - Dynamite Cocktail by Dynaformer) was favored. Also taking money was Forever Awesome (Awesome Again - Caprice Miss by Golden Missile), who went off at 5-2. Powermouse (Kitten's Joy - Spent Gold by Unaccounted For) was 11-1. Forever Awesome looked good in the paddock, as did the favorite. Empire Rising (Empire Maker - Seeking the Ring by Seeking the Gold) balked a bit at the load. It was a pretty even start, except for Forever Awesome, who broke in the air. Empire Rising went to the front, but he had company. Stormy Lord (Stormy Atlantic - Lady Auchamore by Meadowlake) came up the rail and took the lead. Also involved early was Giant's Tomb (Awesome Again - Song of the Wild by Gone West). Stormy Lord was still on top into the stretch, but Hollinger was coming. He swept to the lead and won with ease under a hand ride. I know that this one was restricted to Canadian-breds, but might we be seeing the undefeated Hollinger in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf? Powermouse was off the pace early, made a big move, and then ran evenly for 6th. Back to maidens for him? Turf or Poly? Watch the Replay.
