News and Notes

Today it was announced that one of our freshman sires from 2008, Peace Rules, is going to stand in Korea in 2010. I wish him lots of luck in his new land.

Check out Jason Shandler's Breeders' Cup Chat for an interview with Kenny McPeek about his 2-year olds, including recent winners Connie and Michael and Fist of Rage.

Meridian Mama Holds off Angels, Jane

Angels in Arms (Saint Liam - Mayfield by Exploit) was favored, Afleet Jane (Afleet Alex - North Lake Jane by Meadowlake) was 10-1. Meridian Mama (Forestry - Stirring by Seeking the Gold) showed a little temper in the paddock. Angels in Arms and Afleet Jane both looked good on the track. Angels in Arms was getting plenty of attention from the camera man. Virtuous Lion (Lion Hearted - Pass the Virtue by Slavic) acted up a bit at the load. Meridian Mama went for the early lead. Off slowly were Elusive Temper (Elusive Quality - Schedule (GB) by Brian's Time), Afleet Jane and Celebration R N (Congaree - Diane's Birthday by With Approval), who was soon double digits behind the next horse. Angels in Arms was about mid-pack and didn't really look comfortable. Meridian Mama continued to lead, with first Shanta (Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) - Fiddle Me Blue (GB) by Bluebird) and then Big Time Bling (Touch Gold - Blonde Tornado by Golden Missile) pursuing. Angels in Arms finally started running late. She came rolling wide, but couldn't quite catch Meridian Mama. Big Time Bling finished third. Interestingly, the three experienced fillies in the race made up the trifecta. Afleet Jane passed a few to finish 6th. Watch the Replay.

Bella Diamante Eyes the Win

The Steve Asmussen-trained Sixtysix Margaux (Yes It's True - Sixtyone Margaux by Cozzene) was favored at even money. Also receiving attention from the bettors was first-timer Bella Diamante (Lost Soldier - Sharons Song by Badger Land). Eyes of a Saint (Saint Liam - Eyeofthestorm by Summer Squall) was 21-1. I kind of liked the look of Pocketful (Top Hit - To the Post by Bold Ego). Whistlin' Jean (Pure Prize - Just a Broad by Broad Brush) balked at the load. Holy Motion (Holy Bull - Tuft of Flowers by Two Punch) won the break, but Sixtysix Margaux was in quick pursuit. She moved even with Holy Motion, and then swept on by, with Holy Motion offering little resistance. Sitting just off of these early was Bella Diamante, who zipped by Sixtysix Margaux in the stretch, and drew off to an easy 2 1/2 length victory. Eyes of a Saint finished in mid-pack, 6th. Not a great debut, but not a horrible one either. They put up some pretty nifty fractions in this one (:21.35, :44.26, :57.06, final time: 1:10.46). Wind-aided? I know that they had 60 mile an hour winds earlier in the area. Watch the Replay.

Their dam, Madam C E O, is a half-sister to 5 winners, including stakes winner Tiffany Diamond. Haitian Hero subsequently ran at Keeneland on October 15, finishing 8th. He sold for $12,000 at the Keeneland January 2009 Horses of All Ages Sale. He is the first foal out of stakes-placed Regal Boot. His dam, Moody Royal, is a half-sister to 8 winners, including stakes winner Drone Counsell. Seeking the Orange is by Quest, whose 9 runners have made 21 combined starts, recording 5 wins, 1 second, 1 third, and $57,070. Leslie, dam of Seeking the Orange, was a winner, and has produced 2 winners. Leslie is also a half-sister to 5 winners.

Also by a first-crop sire is Max the Knife (Unforgettable Max - Smartenclassy by Regal Classic), by Unforgettable Max. Unforgettable Max's 17 runners have made 30 total starts, recording 4 seconds, 4 thirds, and $50,954. Max the Knife finished 10th in his only start, at a mile at Turfway Park on October 4.
