News and Notes

Best race call of the day came in the fourth at Churchill Downs, when Mark Johnson said that Naughty Bits was slightly squeezed. By the way, the 100-1 Naughty Bits ran a credible race after that start, finishing 4th. The winner was Aqualane Shores. Watch the Replay.

Stakes Result

Dublin (colt; Afleet Alex - Classy Mirage by Storm Bird) finished 7th in the Iroquois Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs, never really seemed to get involved. The winner was Thiskyhasnolimit (Sky Mesa - Lovely Regina by Deputy Minister). Watch the Replay. Read more about the Iroquois here.

Allowance Result

Holiday Buzz (colt; Afleet Alex - Dixie Holiday by Dixieland Band) finished a good second in his Allowance race at Churchill Downs, coming up just a neck short to Callide Valley (Indian Charlie - Cheri Chardoneigh by Hennessy). Stately Victor (colt; Ghostzapper - Collect the Cash by Dynaformer) took all the money at the windows, but he did a half-stumble out of the gate and didn't show much after that, finishing 7th. A Reward for Romans

The turf was firm and the only scratch from the main body of the race was Ticondero (Cherokee Run - Gal of Mine by Mining). This allowed AE Coffee Break (A. P. Indy - Java (GB) by Rainbow Quest) to run. The Dale Romans trained Romans Reward (Kitten's Joy - Knock Off by Fit to Fight) was heavily favored, going off at even money. Furious Run (Rock Hard Ten - One Dream Cat by Storm Cat) was 10-1. Lake Pleasant (Friends Lake - Pleasant Kaye by Pleasant Colony) was a little on edge, Furious Run looked ready, and Romans Reward looked magnificent. The break was fair for all. Romans Reward went right to the front. He set comfortable fractions and then spurted away in the stretch. Bascom Hall (Mizzen Mast - Victorian Woman by Jeblar) made a run late, but Romans Reward was home free. Visually, this was a pretty impressive victory. Romans Reward is the 16th winner for Kitten's Joy. Furious Run put in a bid on the outside, but flattened out and finished 10th. Watch the Replay.

Iron is the Champ over Sheltowee

Euromillion (Eurosilver - Vermilion Sea by Boundary) was scratched. Candy Van (Van Nistelrooy - Candy Cane Delight by Temperence Hill) was favored and looked the part. Sheltowee (Saint Liam - Crafty Oak by Crafty Prospector) was respected at 5-2. I thought he looked attentive in the paddock. Osage Iron (Nassau Hall - Twist N Stroll by Oliver's Twist) was off slowly. Mr. Alanzo (Mizzen Mast - I Can Fan Fan by Lear Fan) went to the lead, but Candy Van was right with him. Candy Van put Mr. Alanzo away and established a clear lead. Iron Champ (Champali - Iron Brat by Grindstone) was almost sideways, on the wrong lead, but he was coming and went by Candy Van. Sheltowee was coming too, but he couldn't catch Iron Champ, who finally straightened out late. Win Brother Pins (Tenpins - Valiant Queen by Lord Avie) who was fractious in the gate, closed to get third at 134-1, paying $29.20. Watch the Replay.

Whoopty Whoopty Got the Ghost

No scratches in this one. Whoopty Whoopty (Distorted Humor - Spring Meadow by Meadowlake), who was 2nd in her debut, was favored. Seeking the Ghost (Ghostzapper - Questress by Seeking the Gold) was 9-1. She was pretty hyper in the post parade. Stormandaprayer (Songandaprayer - Stormy Pick by Storm Creek) broke on top, but Razzlemedazzleme (French Envoy - Our Golden Gal by Golden Gear) assumed a slight lead. This did not last long, as Stormandaprayer went by to lead. Whoopty Whoopty was just off the pace. She came running in the stretch and pulled away to an easy victory. Hearted (Grand Reward - Shakespearean by Theatrical (IRE)) came late to take second in a nice debut. Seeking the Ghost was fairly green and did well to finish 5th. Watch the Replay.

First-timer Mister Minister (Songandaprayer - Cherylville Slew by Evansville Slew) was the buzz horse, going off at near even money. Gaelic Will (Saint Liam - Golf Girl by Kingmambo) was 17-1 at post time. Debuter Mayor Tom (Limehouse - Bluster by Storm Cat) was acting up as Francisco Torres tried to get aboard, and Midnight Vigil (Strong Hope - Miss Moonlight by Broad Brush) was rearing in the paddock. He continued to act up on the track. Gaelic Will looked calm and collected. Mayor Tom and Halo Casper (Silver Ghost - Toot's Classic by Well Decorated) broke slowly, the rest were off well. Tiz Chrome (Tiznow - Woodland Shadow by Woodman) went to the lead. Mister Minister and Henry's Time (Hennessy - Since Time Began by Rubiano) were chasing.
