Chimayo Runs Hard

No scratches in this 5 horse race. Chimayo (A. P. Indy - Chimichurri by Elusive Quality), the $3.1 million yearling, was favored at post time, and she warmed up strong. Hard Call (Rock Hard Ten - Call Me Up by Miner's Mark) looked ready. At the break, Chimayo went right to the lead, but Hard Call went with her. It was a tactical race, everyone waiting to see who would move first. Chimayo pulled free from Hard Call in the stretch, drawing off to win by better than 4. Pearly Blue (Empire Maker - Western Ransom by Red Ransom) was late on the scene, and picked up the second spot. Exchange Funds (Speightstown - Jetinto Houston by Houston), who was third early, was eased in the stretch. Watch the Replay.

The Queen of the Turf

There were no scratches in the main body of the race, so AE entrant Karen Sue's Kitten (Kitten's Joy Joy - Citiscape by Citidancer) stayed on the sidelines. Veil of Tears (Distorted Humor - Safe Haven by A. P. Indy) was the slight favorite. She looked good. Native Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Native Belle by Forestry) was 14-1, she had some energy in the warm-up. Circleboundbay (Langfuhr - Athruz Breeze by Alphabet Soup) made a favorable impression in the post parade. The break was fairly even. Ultimate Life (A. P. Indy - Dream Time by Storm Cat) took a short lead, but C. S. Royce (Unbridled's Song - Sweeping Story by End Sweep) went right with her. Native Kitten was in a good spot, 3rd or 4th. C. S. Royce came up inside of Ultimate Life to take over the lead. Native Kitten put in a bid on the outside, but she tied late and ended up 7th. Favorite Veil of Tears looked a threat, but going by everyone was Queen Hazel (Monarchos - Flying Afleet by Afleet), who scored a nice come from behind victory. Pacesetter C. S. Royce hung on to second by a nose over Aphrodite's Tears (Offlee Wild - Empress Jessie by Red Ransom), who also closed well. Watch the Replay.

Summer Shades the Recession

The track was muddy. Summer Shade (Stephen Got Even - Summer Delight by Quiet American) was favored and looked good in the paddock. Recession Proof (Afleet Alex - Pert Lady by Cox's Ridge) was 24-1. Cloud Blue (Maria's Mon - Storm Breaking by Storm Cat) acted up at the load. Bernadette's Song (Strong Hope - Aesthete by Nijinsky II) set the pace. Both Summer Shade and Baltimore Belle (Bowman's Band - Gabby's Love by Perkin Warbeck) kept her in sight. Recession Proof was at the back. Bernadette's Song faded in the stretch, as Cloud Blue (Maria's Mon - Storm Breaking by Storm Cat) came onto the scene. It looked like a three horse race late, but Cloud Blue squeezed Baltimore Belle out of the picture. Summer Shade and Cloud Blue dueled to the wire, with Summer Shade prevailing by a neck. There was a steward's inquiry and a jockey objection concerning the stretch drive. Cloud Blue was disqualified and moved from second to third. Recession Proof was never much involved, finishing 8th (last). Watch the Replay.
