Five in Line

Happy Holidays

I will be out of town for the next week, so this will be the last Maiden Watch post for awhile. I hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. I do have a homework assignment. It will soon be time to pick stallions to follow in 2010. Like last year, the 5 stallions to follow will be determined by vote, and the horses listed in the poll will be those submitted by readers. So, start submitting your suggestions. Remember, these are stallions whose oldest offspring will be 2-year olds in 2010. If you need help remembering which stallions qualify, go to the Stallion Register, and search for stallions who entered stud in 2007. Some examples include, Bernardini, Flower Alley, and Giacomo. It would also be helpful if you say why you think that horse would be a good candidate. For example, we should follow Curlin, because he was a 2-time Horse of the Year (Curlin, however, is not eligible, since his first foals will be born in 2010).

Julie's Warrior Takes the Joy

Carson Connection (Cuvee - Waterwild by River Special) was favored, Joyful Friend (Kitten's Joy - Somethingtreasured by Charismatic) was 6-1. Heartofthemisson (Global Mission - New Opposition by Slew the Surgeon) and Go Tiger Jack (Victory Gallop - Hussy by Unaccounted For) battled early. Turn and Repent (Repent - Feijoada by Formal Dinner) and Julie's Warrior (Littlebitlively - Julie's Red Dancer by Odd Feller) weren't far off, while Joyful Friend was around mid-pack. Go Tiger Jack shook free from Heartofthemisson, but he couldn't hold off Julie's Warrior. Favorite Carson Connection came running late, but he couldn't catch Julie's Warrior, who was the winner by better than a length. Joyful Friend faded to 9th. Watch the Replay.

Happy Holidays......I have thoroughly enjoyed your column this year. I have a Rock Hard Ten filly, so I have anxiously watched his babies this year.........I do some pinhooking - weanling to yearling - so my choices below are based on what I have seen at the KEE Sept sales.

First Samurai.  Had he not broken his ribs in the gate before the Bluegrass, we may have been watching greatness run.

23 Dec 2009 10:33 AM

1. Bernardini - champion 3yo colt, classic winner, gorgeous individual

2. Artie Schiller - very talented turf horse who raced from ages 2 to 5

3. Henny Hughes - talented juvenile and 3yo sprinter

4. Aragorn - absolutely gorgeous stallion and talented turf horse

5. Rockport Harbor - a talented juvenile whose career was cut short by misfortune

Another one I would be curious to follow is Bellamy Road, who showed such brilliance in the Wood Memorial but never lived up to his promise.

23 Dec 2009 11:01 AM

Bellamy Road, please.

Happy Holidays everyone and thanks again to the Bloodhorse for this great blog.

My picks for 2010

1)Bluegrass Cat -wonderful horse who may have been the best of the Storm Cat sons

2) First Samurai - I love this horse. I got to see him at Claiborne farm in 2008 and he has a wonderful personality in addition to being a good 2 year old

3)Artie Schiller - a explosive sprinter.

4)Borrego, another good son of El Prado who got better as he got older.

5)Aragorn - What an impressive turf horse and he was based on the

West Coast.

23 Dec 2009 11:59 PM

1) Rockport Harbor - Undefeated as a 2YO.  I think his babies will show the same precocity.

2) Silver Train - won both the Breeder's Cup Sprint and the Met Mile. I have a soft spot for this one: He won me a lot of $ on BC day by defeating Lost in the Fog.

3) Bellamy Road - his Wood win alone puts him on this list for me

4) Aragorn - I would like to see a Turf star in my list. Plus - what a stunner to look at!

5) Bernardini - Doesn't need much of a push.

24 Dec 2009 1:38 AM

1.  Bluegrass Cat

2.  Bellamy Road

3.  Giacomo

4.  Bernardini

5.  Bandini

6.  Aragorn

2. Bellamy Road

3. Aragorn

4. Bluegrass Cat

5. Flower Alley

6. Bernardini

24 Dec 2009 11:41 AM

Two sons of Storm Cat to recommend for 2010 freshman sires to follow:

1) Bluegrass Cat

2) With Wistinction

They both have foal crops of over 100 foals. Both were quality race horses. Both come from studs which support their sires.  Their yearlings have great confirmation.

25 Dec 2009 10:24 PM

I am going to put the horses I liked when they were racing.

Rockport Harbor

Bluegrass Cat

Flower Alley

I think these horses were great race horses, and will make great sires.  I especially like Rockport Harbor, and Flower Alley.  I think it was ashame that Rocky had to have foot problems because I think he had more to show us then he did.

26 Dec 2009 10:26 AM

Artie Schiller: Brilliant turf miler with a combination of speed and stamina.

Aragorn (IRE): Visually STUNNING stallion that set a NCR at Del Mar for 9f on the turf by more than a full second, one of his two GI wins.

Bernardini: Debuted at 3 and took the division by storm while he swept the Preakness, Travers, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He also finished second to future Horse of the Year Invasor in the BC Classic, finishing in front of a very solid field.

Flower Alley: A Distorted Humor son that showed he had staying power by winning the Travers and placing the the BC Classic at 3.

Rockport Harbor: Showed great potential as a juvenile before an injury sidelined him for a while.

Happy New Year to you all!

Hope it is a great one at the track and that there are some stellar performances as in 2009!

Bernardini - great racehorse, fantastic pedigree and will be given every chance at stud.  His first yearlings sold very well.  Visually most impressive!

Bluegrass Cat.  Great pedigree! Talented racer and should be given every chance at stud.

Silver Train - very speedy and may get the precocious types!  Good pedigree

Suave by A P Indy.  Talented and not overly expensive stud fee means he should get decent mares.

First Samurai - any son of Giant's Causeway is worth noting given the decent pedigree and good ability he possesses.

Artie Schiller brave and consistent.

English Channel.  Ought to have a good chance to shine given his racetrack ability and striking looks!
