Becky's Kitten was involved early on, but faded to finish 6th in the Tropical Park Derby (gr. IIIT) on yielding turf at Calder. The winner was Fly By Phil (Act of Duty - True Mood by Deputy Minister), who outfinished favorite Lost Aptitude. Read more about the Tropical Park Derby here. Watch the Replay.

Sweet Kitten (filly; Kitten's Joy - Sweet Kassidy by Saint Ballado) finished second in the Clasico Ano Nuevo Stakes (PR-III) at Camarero. The winner was Summer Line (Tenpins - Line Squall by Summer Squall). I missed the race, as apparently Puerto Rico does not observe Daylight Savings Time.

Summer Games Takes the Hard Way Ten

Win for M'lou (Gilded Time - Take the Picture by Doneraile Court) was favored, Hard Way Ten (Rock Hard Ten - Youcan'ttakeme by He's Tops) was 9-1. Ninth Infantry (Forest Danger - Sapphire N Chiffon by Lemon Drop Kid) looked good warming up. Win for M'lou broke on top, but Summer Games (Limehouse - Say Im Great by Oh Say) was right with her. Ninth Infantry was stalking the leaders in third. Hard Way Ten was a little slow to get into stride. Win for M'lou and Summer Games continued to battle into the stretch. Meanwhile, Hard Way Ten was making a nice move on the outside. Summer Games outfinished Win for M'lou to get the win by a neck. Hard Way Ten ran well late to finish third. She should improve as the distances get longer. Watch the Replay.

All Cole T

The track was muddy (sealed). Cowboy Gets Even (Stephen Got Even - Smoking Quality by Elusive Quality) took the early money, but Cole T (Desert Warrior - Sage Burner by Cape Canaveral) was favored at post time. Cutter (Saint Liam - Brite Diamond by Deputy Minister) went off at 40-1. No Peace At All (Peace Rules - She's So Unusual by Allen's Prospect) was on his toes as they headed to the track. Ruse (Elusive Quality - Dyna Da Wyna by Doc's Leader) looked good warming up. Cole T outbroke the rest and soon had a clear lead. Stay Hip (Value Plus - Race to Glory by Honour and Glory) and No Peace At All chased early. Cutter was at the back. In the stretch, Cowboy Gets Even and Idolatry (Pure Prize - Cherokee Sue by Cherokee Run) both made up ground, but they couldn't catch Cole T. Cutter ended up 7th. Watch the Replay.

Big Run for Bruin

Patsy's Prom Date (Repent - Jilli's Dream by Out of Place) was scratched. Five Star David (Five Star Day - E T Phone Laura by Roar) took all the money, going off at 3-5. Five Afleet (Afleet Alex - Nickel Classic by Regal Classic) was 38-1 at post time. Carson's Pride (City Zip - Sneak Out by Belong to Me) had some spring in his step. Drake Manor (Tactical Cat - Emmy Winner by Wagon Limit) kept catching my eye. There was a big scramble for the early lead, Studley (Stormin Fever - Green Light by Sheikh Albadou (GB)) got his head in front. Five Star David and Carson's Pride were pressing, and Buddha's Lyrics (Buddha - Lyrics 'n Laughter by Stop the Music) was moving nicely just behind these on the outside. Buddha's Lyrics hit the front in the stretch, but he couldn't hold off Big Bruin (Vindication - Summer Mis by Summer Squall), who closed with a rush from off the pace. Five Afleet was off slowly and passed a few, finishing 7th. However, he did finish in front of the favorite, Five Star David, who tired to 8th. Watch the Replay.

I find it interesting that we have Albrecht and Durer in this field, who together spell out one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, Albrecht Durer. They do share the same breeder (Fitzhugh, LLC), so their names are probably not a coincidence.

Trappist Monk (Saint Liam - Merengue by Broad Brush) is making his third start in this about 1 1/16 mile contest at Laurel. He finished 9th at 6 furlongs at Philadelphia Park on November 23, and 6th at 7 furlongs at that same track on December 11. Durer (Smart Strike - Broad Expectations by Broad Brush) finished 7th, behind Trappist Monk, on December 11 at Philadelphia Park. His most recent start was at a mile on a sloppy track at Laurel on December 5, where he was third. Stakes winner Richetta, dam of True Success, earned $296,848 in 18 starts.
