Time to Vote

Congratulations to all the Eclipse Award winners, and especially Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, who first appeared on this blog on May 5, 2008, and Champion 3-year old male Summer Bird, who made his first appearance on Maiden Watch on May 13, 2008.

Who to Follow in 2010?

Today the voting begins to determine which stallions to follow in 2010. I have tried to include all the stallions that were suggested by readers. If I have left any out, please note them in the comments. I will leave the poll open for a week, closing it on Tuesday, January 26 at 5:00 PM. It will be included it in any blogs between then and now. Please note that you can only vote for 5 stallions. Feel free to lobby for your picks. I'm glad that you are doing the voting, this is a tough decision. If you need information about the stallions, the Stallion Register is an excellent source.

Tempted to Tapit Laughs at Comical

The track was muddy, and there were no scratches. Tempted to Tapit (Tapit - Tempting Note by Editor's Note) was the choice of the bettors. He looked good in the prelims, and was adding blinkers for this start. Comical (Ghostzapper - Abby Girl by Meadowlake) and entrymate Poseidon (Friends Lake - Witness Post by Gone West) were 5-1. Comical looked ready to go, as they moved on to the track. Deflationary Fears (Value Plus - Free of Charge by Tour d'Or) warmed up nicely. Comical was off a little awkwardly. Deflationary Fears and Tempted to Tapit battled for the early lead, with Calvello (Tapit - Sainttwok by Saint Ballado) also involved. Comical was in 4th, about 6 lengths behind the leading trio. Tempted to Tapit easily moved clear of the other 2, and began moving farther and farther away. Comical moved into 3rd, and then second, but was no threat to the winner. It was an impressive 11 1/2 length victory for Tempted to Tapit, but also a nice debut for Comical, who was 10 1/4 lengths in front of the rest. Tempted to Tapit's victory was marred by the breakdown of Freefourme (Freefourinternet - Straight Country by Straight Man) in the stretch of the race. He was euthanized on the track. Jockey Gabriel Saez escaped injury. Watch the Replay.

Airdrie Stud has a stallion that is quite interesting.  The stallion is "The Daddy."  This horse won from 6 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles.  Airdrie has done very well with stallions that initially were not retired with a big name but have subsequently gone on to prove themselves at stud.  This stallion is also from the In Reality sire line that is known for speed and the ability to carry that speed a distance of ground.  Let's include "The Daddy" on the list of stallions to follow in 2010.

snow - I have added The Daddy to the poll.

How about Invasor to the list.

Blood-Horse Staff

Mike - Invasor will have to wait until next year, his oldest foals are yearlings.

19 Jan 2010 9:53 PM

I was looking through pedigrees, and I just about died laughing when I saw Bellamy Road's, specifically on the dam's side:

Disputed Testimony + Ten Cents a Turn = Hurry Home Hillary

lol! Clever!

19 Jan 2010 10:18 PM

I was so happy to see Rockport Harbor on this list!!! He was such a lovely colt!

19 Jan 2010 10:19 PM

So glad to see Sharp Humor on the list - hope he makes the cut!!

How about Don't Get Mad?..Shaniko?

20 Jan 2010 6:45 AM

Really hoping you follow Sir Shackleton's progeny this year.  His 2-year-olds are in good hands (West Pt. Thoroughbreds, etc.) so it will be interesting to see if he can have a good freshman year.

Blood-Horse Staff

Carlos in Cali - I have added Don't Get Mad and Shaniko to the poll.

20 Jan 2010 8:57 AM

I hope Bandini makes the cut because he was one of my favorites of his generation. Fact, he was the first horse I ever bet on, ever and that was in the Kentucky Derby. The pictures that I have seen of him, what a horse he has become and I hope to see him in person some day. I hope he makes the cut. I know his kids are going to do him proud.

Joe - Of course you can personally follow Survivalist's offspring. Actually, I think it would be great if readers posted on other stallions, as it's physically impossible for me to do them all. One place to start is pedigreequery.com, where you can look up offspring of Survivalist: www.pedigreequery.com/.../survivalist and then enter those names in one of the watch services (including DRF: http://drf.com/HorseWatches.do, Equibase: www.equibase.com/.../gvsCustomerRegistrationNew.cfm, brisnet - www.brisnet.com/.../static.cgi).

Bris also allows you to specify a stallion to receive info about all progeny, but that is a pay service.

You can also get more names from auction catalogs and even from scanning workouts - looking especially for "survive" type names. This should get you started.

20 Jan 2010 9:09 AM

I also look forward to the first from Star Dabbler and Strong Contender as they carry precious lines as well. Then of course there is Unbridled Energy who has to be one of the most impressive looking of the Unbridled's Songs that I have seen based on pictures. Also Greeley's Galaxy should have a strong year as I have seen the pedigrees his first kids have. It's No Joke is another from Distorted Humor to watch as well.

And hopefully keeping the Theatrical legacy is Strut the Stage.

What an outstanding year it is going to be. I cannot wait to see pics of Bernardini's two year olds to see if they are as physically impressive as he was.

20 Jan 2010 9:21 AM

I cannot wait for the first ones from European sires ad Valorem, Aussie Rules, Cacique, David Junior (cannot WAIT), Heart's Cry, Holy Roman Emperor, Hurricane Run.

Two more North American I cannot wait are The White Fox and Andromeda's Hero. I want to see if the Fox's kids look like him and Andromeda's Hero was talented as well.

20 Jan 2010 9:25 AM

Aragorn needs more votes!

I am excited about Flower Alley...and not at all surprised about Bernadini lol.

20 Jan 2010 9:27 AM

I second animal lover on adding Hurricane Run to the list.

20 Jan 2010 11:30 AM
Blood-Horse Staff

Sorry, I will not be adding European or Japanese-based stallions at this time, maybe in the future.

20 Jan 2010 12:01 PM

Now that Shaniko is on the list there are more than 5 I want to follow. With Distinction was worthy of bumping off one of the 5 A.P. Indy boys. I like the Storm Cat-Alydar cross.

20 Jan 2010 1:29 PM

I picked:

1. Bernardini – Champion 3 year old, Classic Winner, and IMHO the best horse to race in NA this decade.  Will be the heir to his sire’s throne (AP Indy).

2. First Samurai – Son of the Great Giant’s Causeway, dual Gr-1 winner at 2, and a Gr-2 winner at 3.  Earned almost a million dollars in a career cut short by injury.

3. Aragorn - Irish millionaire son of Giant’s Causeway out of the Mr. Prospector mare, Onaga.  Gr-2 winner at 3.  At 4, won two Gr-1s, two Gr-2s, as well as placing in two additional Gr-1s (one being the Breeders Cup Mile).  A chance to see the progeny of a great turf horse.

4. Bluegrass Cat – son of sire of sires Storm Cat.  A Gr-2 & Gr-3 winner at 2.  A Gr-1 winner at 3, to go along with finishing second in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers.

5. Bandini - Son of Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, Gr-1 winner at 3, and Gr-3 winner at 4.  Won 5 of 9 starts in a injury hampered career.

20 Jan 2010 1:29 PM

I may be wrong but isn't George Washington's filly a two year old now? (not for the list but just a general question). I believe she is. one that I will keep track of personally for sure.

20 Jan 2010 7:05 PM
Blood-Horse Staff

ZJ - yes, that's correct. The George Washington filly out of Flawlessly is a 2-year old this year. She has not yet been named.

20 Jan 2010 7:09 PM

Ouija Board's first born colt named Voodoo Prince is two years old now too. I can't wait to hear how he is doing.

an interesting pick  should be the green monkey ???

21 Jan 2010 12:22 AM

The Green Monkey's first foal was born on Jan 13: www.bloodhorse.com/.../the-green-monkey-sires-first-foal

She won't be running for 2 years.

21 Jan 2010 12:35 AM

I LOVE Bluegrass Cat. I really think he'll be a top sire. He has the looks and race record to really have a great chance at stud.

My other picks are Aragorn, War Front,Suave and Bernadini.
