A Superior Selection

The track was fast. Superior Selection (Giant's Causeway - Society Selection by Coronado's Quest) was the early choice, but Maestro Miss (Bernstein - Changeable by Miswaki) was the post-time favorite. Saint Amore (Saint Liam - Amaretta by Woodman) was 13-1, Afleeting Lady (Afleet Alex - Oatsee by Unbridled) was 14-1, and Conspicuous (Ghostzapper - Kalahari Cat by Cape Town), who was adding blinkers, was 18-1. Maestro Miss was acting frisky. Hayley Rebecca (Macho Uno - Nice Dilemma by Silver Deputy) caught my eye, and Afleeting Lady made a favorable first impression. Cape Cod Carrie (Purge - Bet by Go for Gin) was all business out on the track. Hayley Rebecca was a little skittish at the load. Superior Selection broke on top, but Cape Cod Carrie got the lead from her rail spot. Superior Selection and Hayley Rebecca were chasing Cape Cod Carrie. Our three: Saint Amore, Afleeting Lady, and Conspicuous were near the back. Coming out of the turn, Superior Selection moved by Cape Cod Carrie and drew off to win by 5. Cape Cod Carrie was another 6 lengths in front of the rest. Conspicuous led the back pack in third, with Afleeting Lady 4th, and Saint Amore 5th. I guess our girls like hanging out together. Rys is more Wandaful than Ruthville

The turf was good, but the only scratches were the AEs. Cranberry Queen (Lemon Drop Kid - Deep in My Heart by Rahy), who looked good in the paddock, took the early money. Simply Carina (El Prado (IRE) - Astra by Theatrical (IRE)) was favored as they broke. Ruthville (Afleet Alex - Ruthian by Rahy) was 8-1. She made a nice appearance as well. Chipanaputt (Unbridled's Song - Regal Miss Copelan by Copelan) appeared to be a handful in the warm-up. The start was pretty fair. Rosalinda (Awesome Again - Gentle Ridge by Bertrando) was on top early, with Dreamingly (Giant's Causeway - Yard Art by Lasting Approval), Wandaful Wandaful (Hero's Tribute - Debby Dot Com by Caller I. D.), and Rhys (Storm Cat - Tina Bull by Holy Bull) sticking close. Ruthville was off the pace, but in a good spot. She began making up ground in the stretch. Up front, Rhys came between horses to grab a slim lead, but Wandaful Wandaful was tough. They finished together, separated by a head bob, which went to Rhys. Ruthville was gobbling up ground late to finish third. This was a nice looking group of fillies and I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple of future stakes winners in this field. Recession Proof is also entered in a MC at Laurel. It is 1mile on the dirt, race 5. I just thought I might add that, you might've gotten it and I just missed it.

SimmonsGF - Yes, Recession Proof is entered, but Laurel canceled racing, so I don't think she'll run.

As I said before - I am very disappointed in this year's choice of Stallions to watch (especially another unsound mediocre son of Unbridled's Song).

I want to watch for offspring of Aragorn and Artie Schiller. I still have not gotten an answer on how to find these offspring and if they are working or not other than going to the TB pedigree Query - enter the names in my Equibase stable and hope for a workout. Does anyone have another suggestion?

AnneM - Brisnet has a sire watch as part of their Stable Alert: http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/static.cgi?page=stablealert

You may also want to check out the foaltrack.com site (see: http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/55096/facebook-for-foals-links-to-equibase for more information). Sales catalogs are another source.

You can also pay for reports through equineline, for example.

As I have said many times, I would love for readers to follow other stallions and post about them.

Thanks for the notice about Wilburn! How exciting - I do adore Bernardini. It seems a little early for babies to be working, though. This colt must be very precocious.

Betsy - Yes, I wouldn't have expected the Bernardinis to be working this early. I think Wilburn must get that from mama Moonlight Sonata. She ran at Keeneland in April of her 2-year old season, and was a graded stakes winner that year.

I HAVE ONE THING ANNE M COULD TRY.FIRST DO THE PEDIGREE-QUERY AND MAKE A LIST OF THE HORSES YOU ARE INTERESTED IN.THEN GO TO EQUIBASE AND SCROLL DOWN THE LEFT SIDE TILL YOU COME TO HORSE SEARCH.ENTER YOUR HORSE'S NAME AND IF IT HAS HAD A WORKOUT IT WILL SHOW UP. YOU MUST HAVE PATIENCE,BECAUSE SOME HORSES, ESPECIALLY TWO YEAR OLDS,ARE SOMETIMES SLOW TO SHOW UP ON THIS LIST!---GOOD LUCK

I'm sorry, I should have realized racing would be cancelled at some tracks. At my house there is already at least 30 inches of snow and it is still falling.

SimmonsGF - Turfway has canceled too (as well as Santa Anita), so Marvelous Monkey and Tribecky stay in the barn as well.

Isn't it early, though, for any babies to be working ? Even precociously bred ones? I wonder who Wilburn's connections are - I'm not thrilled that they are pushing a horse that barely turned 2. In fact, he's been working since he was a yearling. I hope he goes to a sale because I don't think I'm happy with his current ownership.

Betsy...it is very common for 2yos to be working right now...it is only pushing if you are trying to make them go fast for a sale. Good trainers will let the horse tell them if they are ready or not. Unfortunately, not everyone is a good trainer. Anne M....I agree with you on Artie Schiller...I have one in training that looks special..everyone in the business I talk to likes A.S. also. I also have a filly by Giacomo that my trainer thinks may be one of the best horses he has ever had. I don't know if that makes Giacomo one to watch, but I would put my money on Artie Schiller.

TCR, thanks! Well, I hope the colt is ok and he does well....I'm very excited about his sire and he certainly comes from a classy family

Superior Selection was on my VS Stable from day one as her mother Society Selection was one of my favorites of her generation. This filly will emmulate her mother and then some. She is my pick for the filly Classic races this year (it may be early even if it may seem early). Giant's Causeway is an amazing sire to begin with. I can't wait to see Superior Selection in the big times.

Just a question because I wouldn't have a clue about it, but is it hard on a two-year-old's frame if they are working this young? I know they have them work for the sales, etc. but when they're this young is it hard on them? I really don't know, just curious. Without a doubt Bernardini is going to be one of the leading freshman sires this year. Bandini will be right behind him.

TCR and Betsey, great call on Artie the way Medaglia and Kittens JOy have began their stud careers it is a very good chance Artie could do the same. Been some very good looking horses by him come through the sales ring. Best of luck TCR on yours on the track.

I loved Bernardini so much, I cannot wait.

By any chance, where would I be able to find a Virtual Stable notice web page for the European stallions? Just on a curious note as I want to try and follow some of them as well. Is there a web site where this is available? Thanks so much! I cannot wait to hear more from Bernardini, etc.

ZJ - I use HorseTracker at: http://www.irishracing.com/ for tracking European runners.

There are probably other services. Can anyone recommend one?
