News and Notes

Wilburn (colt; Bernardini - Moonlight Sonata by Carson City) had his 4th official work February 13, going 4 furlongs in :49.00 at Turfway Park.

It was good to see a couple of our 2008 horses win graded stakes, as Munnings (colt; Speightstown - La Comete by Holy Bull) won the Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship Stakes (gr.II) and Jeranimo (colt; Congaree - Jera by Jeblar) took the Strub (gr. II).

Another blast from the past as Curly (Gulch - Fount by Kris S.), one of the first horses that we followed, was a winner in the second race at Turfway Park on February 13. It was a huge class-drop, going from Allowance/Optional Claiming to a $7,500 Claiming race.  Watch the Replay. Curly has now run 11 times, with 3 wins and 1 second, and earnings of $45,875.

Imaginary Saint (filly; Saint Liam - Imaginary Cat by Storm Cat) finished 3rd in the mile and 40 yard Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. She was involved from the beginning, but just didn't have enough late. The winner was the impressive Diva Delite (Repent - Tour Hostess by Tour d'Or). Watch the Replay.

Move On Up (gelding; Ghostzapper - Fluid Move by Nureyev) was about mid-pack early in the Baffle Stakes at Santa Anita, but retreated and finished 7th (last). It may have been the company, or it may have been the 6 days rest. Watch the Replay.

Revealing a Star

Star Recruit (Aldebaran - Offtheoldblock by A. P. Indy) was favored, Doilookfatnthese (Saint Liam - Big Tease by Gold Token) went off at 18-1. I liked the look of Golden Guilder (Aptitude - Ruby Rubles by Scarlet Ibis) in the paddock. Doilookfatnthese looked good on the track, as did the favorite. Also making a good impression was Everything Nice (Elusive Quality - Ashraaf by Deputy Minister). Unfortunately, she got loose before the load and was a late scratch. Thank Heaven (Omega Code - Heavens to Betsy by Miswaki) outbroke the field, but everyone soon caught up. There was a big scramble for the lead, and Doilookfatnthese was among those scrambling. Also up there was Scootles (Macho Uno - Season's Flair by D'Accord), Cocktail Music (Concorde's Tune - Cocktailsandreams by Lucky North), and Golden Guilder. Star Recruit stayed out of the early battle. Doilookfatnthese, Scootles, and Thank Heaven continued to battle into the stretch, but Star Recruit and Texas Aggie (Purge - Texas Tammy by Seeking the Gold) were coming. Star Recruit had first jump, and came running 4-wide for the victory. Texas Aggie, who had plenty of traffic problems, came even wider to pick up second. Doilookfatnthese hung on for third, much improved over her 6th-place debut. Watch the Replay.

Missbelle O's Tale

Entranced (Ghostzapper - Fast and Early by Carson City) was the early favorite, but Mimi's Bling (Bernstein - Meadow Oaks by Meadowlake) got the nod at post time. Gatito's Alegria (Kitten's Joy - More Than Sum by More Than Ready) was almost 30-1, and Afleet Frio (Afleet Alex - Frio Town by Kerosene) was 46-1. The post parade was held just 3 minutes before they went into the gate. Missbelle O's Tale (Tale of the Cat - Miss Belle O by Olympio) looked good as they headed to the track. Mimi's Bling was on her toes. Entranced looked ready and she broke well, but Missbelle O's Tale took the early lead. She was pursued by Authentic Ethan (Authenticate - Ethan's Secret by Porto Varas). Entranced was not far behind. Missbelle O's Tale and Authentic Ethan continued to run 1-2 into the stretch, while Entranced began to retreat. Truly Electric (Is It True - Electric Heat by Sea of Secrets) came on late to pick up second, but she was no threat to Missbelle O's Tale, who pulled away to win by 4. The best of our three was Gatito's Alegria, who picked up a lot of places late to finish 5th. Entranced was 8th, and Afleet Frio finished 9th. Watch the Replay.

King Rock (colt; Rock Hard Ten - Queen Mindy by King of Kings (IRE)) closed a lot of ground late on the inside to finish second in his Allowance race at Philadelphia Park. He's begging for more distance. Hopefully, he'll get it next time out. Watch the Replay.

Few articles make it into my Afleet Alex scrapbook, I'm pretty particular. -but your headline "A Heavenly Meeting at Oaklawn" with Afleet of Angels name recognized along with the other great fillies-did. I can't wait to look back and read it someday when I'm "out to pasture".
