Hoping for an Upgrade for Trinity Run and Joyce's Angel

News and Notes

Sad news to report, as I received confirmation that Backstretch (colt; Afleet Alex - Pleasant Point by Pleasant Colony) was euthanized due to the severity of his injuries. Backstretch finished second in a Maiden Claiming race at Beulah on February 24, but broke down after the race.

Laheen (filly; Ghostzapper - Assess by Seattle Slew) was the heavy favorite in the Green Oaks Stakes, which was run on a muddy track at Delta Downs. She was involved from the beginning and seemed poised to take control, but weakened and finished 4th. The winner was Sheer Beauty (Mizzen Mast - Vertical Ascent by Lear Fan). Watch the Replay.

Thunder Finds a Way

True (Yes It's True - Beat Your Feet by Dixieland Band) was scratched, along with AEs Maple Heights (Powerscourt (GB) - Shambles by Majestic Light), Baby Come Home (Broken Vow - Tussle by Kris S.), and Couric (Arch - Adelantada by Rahy). The turf was firm. Cave In (Mineshaft - Quick Tip by Unaccounted For) was favored, while Tenacious Allison (Rock Hard Ten - Allison P. by Unbridled) was 6-1. She looked good in the paddock. You're Beingplayed (Speightstown - Unbridled Run by Unbridled) took early action at the window, but went off at nearly 7-1. First-timer Thunder Way (Thunder Gulch - Chestnut Way by Horse Chestnut (SAF)) was a bit of a handful as they made their way to the track. Cave In looked good to go. You're Beingplayed went to the front, followed by Phonyville (Pollard's Vision - Proud Little Phony by Phone Trick). Also up close was La Bien Rose (Smoke Glacken - Just Say So by Green Dancer). Tenacious Allison was sitting around 6th or 7th. There was a gang of fillies coming late, including Tenacious Allison. Forthelonghaul (Ben Bulben - Blue Iris by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) took a brief lead, but she couldn't hold it. Rallying on the inside was Thunder Way, who came home a winner in her first try. Taking the outside route was Flirty Girty (Even the Score - Fast Move by Hickman Creek), who had to settle for second. Tenacious Allison weakened a little late, and ended up 5th. Watch the Replay.

Keilana Captures the Fox

The turf was firm, scratched were Put On the Ritz (Put It Back - Flautist (GB) by Lion Cavern), Tribeca Royality (Chapel Royal - She's a Tattletale by Tale of the Cat), and AEs Why I Love You (Whywhywhy - Sweetly Decorated by Well Decorated), Ludacia (Royal Academy - Lady Bristol by Dispersal), and Blake'sluckypenny (Full Mandate - Bring Me Luck by Pentelicus). AE Divine Sophia (Lightnin N Thunder - Street Style by Lucky Lionel) drew into the race. Keilana (Tripp - L'Emeraude (FR) by Vert Amande) was favored, Fox Hunt (Saint Liam - Zorra by Silver Fox) was 65-1. Great Inspiration (Albert the Great - Divinely Inspired by Glitterman) looked good to me. Keilana outbroke the field, and soon established a several length lead. Fox Hunt and Finalmont (Exchange Rate - Snappy Tale by Tale of the Cat) were the closest pursuers. Keilana continued to lead into the stretch. Finalmont, Great Inspiration, and Very Very Clever (North Light (IRE) - Knot So Clever by Twining) were all moving well late, but they couldn't catch the free-running Keilana. Fox Hunt tired in the stretch. She ended up 7th, but it wasn't a bad turf debut. She was involved for the majority of the race. Watch the Replay.

Other February 26 Results

Syo Defenceman (colt; Afleet Alex - Southern Sandra by Dixie Brass) makes it 2 in a row, with a nice off the pace score in his 1 1/16 mile Starter Allowance on the Gulfstream turf. Finishing second to Syo Defenceman was Strike the Tiger (Tiger Ridge - R Lucky Strike by In Excess (IRE)), famous as the winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot. Syo Defenceman is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Watch the Replay.

Glorious Memory (filly; Kitten's Joy - Glorious Linda (FR) by Le Glorieux (GB)) came running late and got through on the rail to win her mile and a sixteenth Maiden Claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs. Watch the Replay.

Fed Up (colt; Rock Hard Ten - Perdition by Dixieland Band) set the pace, but Speedy Solution (gelding; Afleet Alex - Perfect Solution by Seeking the Gold) was running best late in their mile and 40 yard Maiden Claiming race at Fair Grounds. Speedy Solution got the win, and Fed Up tired to 6th. However, Fed Up was claimed out of the race. I wouldn't be surprised if moves up in class. Watch the Replay.

Ghost Town Kat (filly; Ghostzapper - Keeneland Kat by Hennessy) showed brief speed in her 7 furlong Maiden Claiming race at Gulfstream, but weakened and finished 9th. Watch the Replay.

Scottkeith'skitten (colt; Kitten's Joy - Miss Bergdorf by Old Trieste) didn't have much punch in his mile Claiming race on the turf at Gulfstream, finishing 9th. Watch the Replay.

Thank you for the info on Backstretch, may he RIP.

On a brighter note, I thought that Syo Defenseman looked very good and I hope we see him in stakes company in the near future. He has a beautiful way of going and Kent wasn't doing much but hand riding him at the end.

27 Feb 2010 4:22 PM

I saw the race today with Joyce's Angel.  Was hoping for the best, but she did put in a pretty good performance.  It's a wonderful story, and I sincerely hope that the filly can run to her true potential.  God Bless FLS.
