Faster and Faster

Fast Alex (colt; Afleet Alex - Unaffordable by Unbridled) was reserved off-the-pace early in his Allowance/Optional Claiming race at Fair Grounds, while saving ground on the rail. He was moved to the outside for the stretch drive, and mowed them all down late on the sloppy track to win easily. He did drift in a little late, but it was only his third start. Next up for Fast Alex is the Louisiana Derby. In a year crowded with front-running Derby hopefuls, you have to love a colt you can close. Watch the Replay. Read more about Fast Alex here.

For Dixieland Not All About Alex

Mon Chou (Purge - Outcross by Kris S.) was scratched. The track was good. Not for Dixieland (Not For Love - Dixie Flag by Dixieland Band) was the heavy favorite. All About Alex (Afleet Alex - California Sunset by Deputy Minister) was getting some respect at 5-1. Brazilian Bliss (Siphon (BRZ) - Darn Wild by Wild Event) made a good impression in the paddock. Longshot Malibu Citi (Malibu Moon - Bay Citi Girl by Citidancer) was on her toes. All About Alex looked good on the track. Brazilian Bliss broke on top with Not for Dixieland tracking. All About Alex was off ok, sitting about 4th or 5th early. Jill the Pill (French Envoy - Ticklin' Toni by Smile) stumbled at the start. After 6 furlongs, Not for Dixieland moved on by Brazilian Bliss. Lemel (Point Given - Clever Princess by Clever Trick) took up the chase, but she couldn't catch Not for Dixieland. All About Alex was moving well late to take the show spot. Watch the Replay.

Berberis Steals St Liams Halo

It was raining at Fair Grounds and the track was sloppy. In fact, this was the last race run there on March 1, the remaining two races were canceled. Despite the rain, the only scratch was unraced Blue Day in May (Sky Mesa - Gal O Gal by Manlove). Berberis (Southern Image - Miss Puzzle (AUS) by Citidancer (IRE)) was the slight favorite over Capote Ruler (Roman Ruler - Capote Miss by Capote). St Liams Halo (Saint Liam - Foolishly by Broad Brush) was 10-1. He looked good in the paddock, while Capote Ruler was really strutting his stuff. Birman (Maria's Mon - Uppity Kitty by Tale of the Cat) looked less than pleased with the rain. However, Berberis seemed unphased by the slop. St Liams Halo was involved early, but it was Capote Ruler who took the lead. St Liams Halo secured second, followed by Grandad Bud (Closing Argument - Palace Emblem by Our Emblem) and Guilty Plea (Cat Thief - Custom Made by Hadif). St Liams Halo went after Capote Ruler in the stretch, and got his head in front, but Capote Ruler fought back. Berberis was making his move on the outside. He shied from St Liams Halo, bumped Elkhorn Creek, and then pulled away to a length and 3/4 victory. There was a long stewards' inquiry examining the stretch drive. In the end, there was no change, and Berberis was the official winner. Watch the Replay.
