Wetzel is Wild Over Speed Demon

Gangsterontherun (City Zip - Bridge to Cross by Phone Trick), part of an entry with Sweet William (Bring the Heat - Wish for a Jeanne by Roar), and Gold for Cash (Eurosilver - Carib Gal by Awesome Again) were scratched. Sweet William was favored, going off at less than even money. Also taking action at the windows was Wetzel (Successful Appeal - Lady Carmen by Yankee Victor). Speed Demon (Bluegrass Cat - Celestial Legend by City Zip) was respected at 6-1. Nacho Man (Limehouse - Top Cappelletti by Capote) was on his toes as they left the paddock. Weekend Wildcat (Lion Heart - Blushing Double by Candy Stripes) was a little rambunctious on the track. Speed Demon looked like he needed to settle down a little, but he loaded like a pro. It was a fairly typical start for a 2-year-old race. Double Down Brown (Max's Pal - Kissintobeclever by Kissin Kris) veered out at the start, and wasn't much involved afterwards. Speed Demon was squeezed, and had to back off. Going for the lead were Wetzel, Sweet William, and Weekend Wildcat. Wetzel and Sweet William dueled into the stretch, with Weekend Wildcat sitting off of them in third. There was a gap to the rest of them. Weekend Wildcat made a move to join the top pair and looked as though he would go on by. Sweet William backed off, but Wetzel fought back. Wetzel and Weekend Wildcat hit the wire together, with Wetzel getting his nose in front. Making up good ground late was Speed Demon, who finished a nice third. Great debut for him, and a good debut for Bluegrass Cat's stallion career. Watch the Replay.

Wonderful win for Nina Fever - she made it look easy. Borego was a very good, sound runner. My guess is that his babies will do better than many of the more hyped, speedy but fragile freshman sires.
