Dancing By Ghost Shopper and Feelin Fine

There were no scratches, and as usual the Keeneland Polytrack was fast. First-timer Deets (Forestry - Cabo Sunrise by Elusive Quality) was the early favorite, but morning-line choice Dancing Roman (Roman Ruler - Glitterbdancing by Glitterman) got the nod at post time. Feelin Fine (Afleet Alex - Say It With Feelin by Deputy Minister) also was getting plenty of action at the windows, 5-2 when they broke. He certainly looked the best in the paddock, and on the track. But, given the tendency of Afleet Alexes to break slowly, I was a little skeptical. Ghost Shopper (Ghostzapper - Shop Till You Drop by Thunder Gulch) was 9-1. Deets broke on top, with Platinum Hunter (Jade Hunter - Maha Al Iman by Pulpit) keeping him company early. Ghost Shopper was in a decent position, and Feelin Fine was at the back, after a slow start. Dancing Roman and Proud Jared (Proud Accolade - Twisted Cord by Pick Up the Phone) moved into contention, as Platinum Hunter faded. It was Deets and Dancing Roman battling to the wire, with Dancing Roman taking it by a neck. Ghost Shopper had to steady, but ran on late to pick up fourth. Feelin Fine threatened to get involved, but flattened out and finished 5th. Watch the Replay.

Stakes Entry

Go Ask Alex (filly; Afleet Alex - Dominique's Joy by Strawberry Road (AUS)) takes on 7 in the Appalachian Stakes (gr. III) at a mile on the Keeneland turf. Post time is 4:35 PM ET. Go Ask Alex broke her maiden last time out, in a mile and a sixteenth turf race at Fair Grounds on March 13. In that race, she went right to the lead, and seemed to be running off under apprentice jockey Oriana Rossi. But, she maintained her advantage throughout, and won by almost 5 lengths. Rossi has the mount again, and it will be interesting to see if similar tactics are employed. Since her victory, Go Ask Alex has worked a couple of times at Keeneland, including 5 furlongs in 1:00.20 on April 9. Likely favorite in the Appalachian Stakes is Rose Catherine (Speightstown - Great Plains Lady by Peaks and Valleys), who was last seen winning the 6.5 furlong Sweet Life Stakes on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita on January 24. She also finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies turf in 2009. Also in the field is Orchestrator (Bernstein - Lucky Socks by Temperance Hill), winner of the Bourbonette Oaks (gr. III) on the Turfway Park Polytrack on March 27; Red Hot Buddha (Buddha - Red Hot Bertie by Tabasco Cat), who is a stakes winner on the turf and dirt; Bay to Bay (Sligo Bay (IRE) - Bala by With Approval), winner of the 2009 Natalma Stakes (Can-III) on the turf at Woodbine; Cactus Cadillac (Cactus Ridge - Plum Country by Country Pine), winner of the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway Park, and 4th in the Bourbonette Oaks behind Orchestrator; and Check the Label (Stormin Fever - Don't Trick Her by Mazel Trick), stakes-placed on the turf and dirt.

It touches my heart to see all the colts and fillies of Afleet Alex out there-I guess the breeders loved his heart and sweetness, but deep inside he has a killer instinct for that finish line. In otherwords Afleet Alex is a true racehorse. I hope some of his kids get off the 5th and 6th bandwagon but I know they are testing the waters being so young-soon they will "growl" and "roar"
