He Is Afleet...Again

He is Afleet...Again

Afleet Again (colt; Afleet Alex - Lucky Again by Wild Again) made a good appearance on the race track before the Withers Stakes (gr. III), but he was facing a big challenge from multiple graded stakes winner D' Funnybone, who was held at 3-5. Afleet Again was not given much of a chance at 24-1. Castaneda went to the lead. Afleet Again was in the mix early, but soon dropped back. D' Funnybone was off a beat slow, moved to get involved, and had to check hard. He recovered to press pacesetter Castaneda. They were setting some ambitious fractions up there: :21.60, :43.82. Ibboyee was seemingly in the catbird seat, sitting in third. He hit the front in the stretch. But, back on the scene was Afleet Again. He closed with a rush to win easily by 1.5 lengths. Spangled Star got by D' Funnybone to finish third. Check out the show payoffs, seems like there was quite a bit of money bet on D' Funnybone to show. Grade III winner Afleet Again now has 3 wins, 1 second, and 2 thirds in 10 starts, with earnings of $177,950. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Withers here.

Wow...The withers was more exciting than the Cliff's Edge.  And Afleet Again looked as though he's ready for more distance.

...what blazing fractions.  Do you suppose this showing bodes well for Dublin's chances in the Derby?   D'Funnybone was really cut off, and then just seemed to lose heart.

I am very happy that Afleet Alex is a great sire so far! I have heard so much stuff about his offspring and wow. They remind me of him.

the pace got d'funnybone more than the mile did. but spped demon is entered on the 28th at churchill downs and he's also nominated for the kentucky juvenile at churchill downs. but the kentucky juvenile is probably where lou brissie will race next since he's also nominated

I have followed Afleet Alex since his early racing career. It was a shame his career was cut short. When his first foals were shown I was impressed. I think he is an amazing sire. It seems like he throws size even though his is not a particularly large stallion. Can't wait to follow his runners.

You go Alex!  I concur that it was a shame that Afleet Alex's career was cut short,  And, seemingly unfair that he lost the Juvenile Breeders Cup to Wilco, that I don't think ever won again, and darn it to Giacomo and Closing Argument in the Derby.  I hope his babies do well.  Good Luck Dublin!!

I have been following Afleet Again since his maiden win in Philly.I was very disappointed with his last two rides..Wide all the way around..now with a good ride he shines! Maybe we will see him in some longer races he certainly looks like he will love the distance I too loved alex and am so happy to see his kids doing so well on the track.

Run Dublin run!
