Dynazaper has the Edge

News and Notes

This will probably be my last post before the Derby, so I wanted to use this opportunity to wish good luck to the Maiden Watch entrants: Stately Victor (Ghostzapper - Collect the Cash by Dynaformer), Dean's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Summer Theatre by Ide), and Dublin (Afleet Alex - Classy Mirage by Storm Bird). I'll also post a few photos of them on track at Churchill Downs. It looks like rain for Saturday, but I'll remain optimistic until the showers begin. My personal Derby pick is Ice Box (Pulpit - Spice Island by Tabasco Cat). Partially, this is a sentimental pick, as his dam, Spice Island was one of my favorites, a photo of her win in the Dowager Stakes hangs on my wall. However, I also like Ice Box because of his winning move in the Florida Derby. That was a Derby winning move, reminiscent of Monarchos both in the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby. I haven't made all of my wagering decisions yet, but I know one bet will be an exacta box of Ice Box and the Maiden Watch horses. Not scientific, but it worked last year to the tune of $1,200. My one piece of advice on playing the Derby is that if you like a horse for whatever reason, put something on him, even if your head says no. I'm not saying to bet your life savings, just a couple of dollars. It's not a sound handicapping practice to regularly bet with your heart, but anything can happen in the Derby and it might as well happen to you.

Dynazaper has the Edge

The turf was firm for the 1 1/16 mile Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs, and Potosina, Midway Holiday, and All County were scratched. Grade I winner Negligee was favored, but Dynazaper (filly; Ghostzapper - Broad Dynamite by Broad Brush) was well regarded as well. Ambitoness got loose before the load, and was a late scratch. Dynazaper was on edge as post time approached, rearing as they attempted to lead her to the turf course. Hidden Value took the early lead, with Dynazaper tracking in second. Negligee was in the third spot, but did not want to settle. The fractions were fairly easy, and Dynazaper began to advance after 6 furlongs. She hit the front in the stretch, but Negligee was coming. Dynazaper held her off for the victory, despite a reluctance to change leads. Dynazaper now has 2 wins and 1 third in 6 starts, with earnings of $81,140. Watch the Replay.
