It's Bella Palooza Time

There were no scratches. Bella Palooza (Bellamy Road - Steal the Show by Cat Thief) received most of the bettors' attention, going off at less than even money. She looked good in the paddock. Fellow first-timer Chk Chk Boom (Mud Route - Lady Shannel by Apalachee) was also respected at the windows, with odds of 3-1. Gator At Fonz's (Out of Place - Darn Kristin by Darn That Alarm) sported the lowest odds of those who had run before, 5-1. Kasey K (Swiss Yodeler - Belle Michelle by Gulch) looked ready. The load was pretty smooth, and the break fair. Kasey K went for the early lead, with Gator At Fonz's right with her. Not far off these two was Bella Palooza. Gator at Fonz's put her head in front on the turn, as Kasey K began to retreat. Bella Palooza made her move 3-wide. Gator At Fonz's fought back, but Bella Palooza pulled away for a 1 3/4 length victory, to become Bellamy Road's first winner. Chk Chk Book came along for third, and Negra Tomasa (Giacomo - Tralee Rose by Alydeed), by freshman sire Giacomo, finished 4th. Watch the Replay. Read more about the race here.

Blue Right By (Bluegrass Cat - Shades of Grace by Seeking the Gold) makes his second start, after finishing 5th in a 4.5 furlong race at Keeneland on April 22. Watch the Replay. He started a little slowly in that one, then was rushed into second, and tired late. He's worked several times since then, including 4 furlongs in :48.40 at Churchill Downs on May 14. Blue Right By sold for $140,000 as a yearling, and is out of the placed mare Shades of Grace. Shades of Grace is a half sister to 6 winners, including grade III winner Fortitude. Bluegrass Cat has had 4 starters which have run 5 combined times, recording 2 wins, 1 second, 1 third, and earnings of $74,900. Grade I winner Bluegrass Cat won 3 out of 4 races at 2, including the Remsen Stakes (gr. II) and the Nashua Stakes (gr. III), and earned $1,761,280 in his career.

Weekend Wildcat (Lion Heart - Blushing Double by Candy Stripes) was second in his only start, a 4.5 furlong race at Keeneland on April 2. He was entered in the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs on April 30, but was scratched. Weekend Wildcat sold for $10,000 as a yearling, and is a half brother to the winner Slam Slam.

The only other entrant with experience is Chipshot (Peace Rules - Chispiski by Appealing Skier), who was 6th in his only race, a 4.5 furlong Maiden Special Weight at Keeneland on April 15. He sold for $25,000 as a yearling, and is out of grade III winner Chispiski. Chispiski was a winner at 2, and earned $386,074 overall. Chispiski is a half sister to 4 winners.

Goodtimehadbyall (Quiet American - Miss Brickyard by A. P. Indy) and Witty Kitty (Tactical Cat - Humorus Distortion by Distorted Humor) are a Merrill Scherer-trained entry. River City Gem (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Dancing Marrea by Lord At War (ARG)) is out of the winning mare Dancing Marrea, who was a winner at 2. Dancing Marrea has produced 8 winners from 8 to run, including stakes-placed River City Rebel. River City Rebel was a debut winner at 2, and earned $245,132 overall. This would seem to be a pedigree begging for turf, but you never know.

Fairview Heights (Distorted Humor - Platinum Heights by Storm Cat) is out of the winning mare Platinum Heights. Platinum Heights did not run at 2, but she was a debut winner at 3. Platinum Heights is a half sister to 8 winners, including stakes winner Ruby Ransom and grade I winners Explosive Red and Chief Bearhart. Chief Bearhart was Champion Grass Horse in the U.S. in 1997 and Canadian Horse of the Year in 1998. Fairview Heights also happens to be the town next to my home town, but that is probably just a coincidence.

Philippe (Mineshaft - Freedom of Speech by Danzig) is a half brother to 6 winners, including stakes-placed Unalienable Right and grade II winner T. D. Vance. Two of Philippe's siblings won their debuts at 2, including T. D. Vance, who earned $576,959 in 25 starts.
