Showing an Affluence of Speed

Dr. Mont E. Brook (Montbrook - Dr. Zachary Mason by Rexson's Hope) was scratched. Speed Demon (Bluegrass Cat - Celestial Legend by City Zip) was favored. Also getting plenty of attention at the windows was Firepole (Hook and Ladder - Talamanca by St. Jovite). The filly Just Like Daddy (The Daddy - Surely Early by Yankee Victor) looked good, as she prepared for her debut. Speed Demon looked ready, as they headed to the track. Unraced Herecomesthe Storm (Grand Reward - Marfa's Girl by Marfa) had some pep in the paddock, but needed a couple shoves to get into the gate. Speed Demon seemed to get a little aggravated with the delay. Herecomesthe Storm was off slowly, and Speed Demon bobbled a bit at the break. Happytheman (Cape Canaveral - Stay With Bruce by Grey Dawn II) went to the lead, and Affluence (Zavata - Irish Crystal by End Sweep) went after him. On the turn, he moved by Happytheman, and kept on going. He took the Par Four by 6 1/4 lengths. Speed Demon, Firepole (Hook and Ladder - Talamanca by St. Jovite), and Just Like Daddy finished together, with Speed Demon winning the place photo. Speed Demon is now stakes-placed, and he has one win, one second, and one third in his three starts, with earnings of $43,800. Watch the Replay.

Too Much Ammunition for Minutesandtouches

American Wildcat (Forest Wildcat - Gingham and Lace by Kris S.) was favored, but Ammunition (Red Bullet - Leah's Angel by Caller I. D.) and Minutesandtouches (Rockport Harbor - Flexible Princess by Honor and Glory) also received some play. The only experienced runner, Gangster of Love (Momentum - Exit for Ever (FR) by Exit to Nowhere), looked good on the track. A couple looked ready to explode, including Bobsong Forana (Siberian Summer - Brandi's Song by Whitney Tower) and Quick Caper (Score Quick - It's a Stick Up by Swiss Yodeler). Ammunition also seemed to be a handful. American Wildcat was pretty professional. Ammunition and American Wildcat went for the early lead. Minutesandtouches was green, but secured third. Ammunition and American Wildcat continued to duel, they pulled a good 5 lengths free of Minutesandtouches. At the wire, it was Ammunition with a 3/4 length win. Not a bad debut for Minutesandtouches, who was 4 lengths in front of the rest of them. Watch the Replay.

Thanks again for the recaps, I did see Affluence and Afleet Express races, wow.. I had both but was really amazed how both won, one was hard running and the later was moving like on cloud nine.  Could someone, with me having to research it, give me a take on Afleet Alex sire;s..someone at dp on Saturday was say that this sire is not a standout? I know there are many kids, but aren't winnings and winning percentage pretty good?

Thanks, Don

Don from Delaware - Afleet Alex is currently the leading 2nd-crop sire. More here: www.bloodhorse.com/.../second-crop

I'll leave it to others to debate the relevancy of that.

I would like to know what the "insiders" in the breeding industry think of Afleet Alex get. Does he consistently throw size, etc.

I love Alex and have been following him and his get. It seems everyday there is mention of another success. Some of his most promising runners have not raced yet.

Katharine I'm not an insider in the breeding industry but if you visit Alex you'll see his sweet disposition and yet when you watch his races his aggression is uncanny to compete and his heart. He is a racehorse witb the best of both worlds. Afleet Alex is a treasure. So are his owners. They are the most down to earth people and I'm sure that reflected in their racehorse and will in future racehorses. You probably already know that Katharine. My mother who was a horsewoman said to always look at the horses ears-for catching the wind, rump for leverage and their heart. I've noticed in all of Alex's kids-what a rump!! They are all like little jackrabbits. I believe in my heart because of the legacy of Alex his foals can reach for the stars and win the Triple Crown someday. Marion Gross before he died -a great stallion manager said of Alex "he's got a great swagger" and "look at the star on his forehead!" Yes Alex is a star. I'm still watching Dublin especially for the Breeder's Cup.

Thank you so much BHS for your comments and response to my query. As for Alex I cannot say enough, I was there at DP to watch his first race and commented to TR in the winners circle (from outside to circle)..."looks like you have a KD horse there, so although I just happened to be there as a regular smoe/fan...I did see him first race and did notice and hope to his potentital!  Almost triple crown.....he and Rose were the duo.

Too bad the trainer/jockey chemistry couldn't last as well...you can't have it all, but have it when you have it and enjoy.

Nice outfit...Don

According to the Daily Racing Form Afleet Express only got a 107, not a 115. Though a 107 is still really good.

Thank you for your answer. I find your mother's comment very interesting. I have been impressed with Afleet Alex' runners; seems like I am always hearing of a new one. There are a number of his 3's that are very promising. Too bad that they didn't make it to the trail. I think we will see another grade 1 star from Alex in the very near future. I have a lot of confidence in ability. We have a lot to look forward to.
