Raised With Pride to be a Winner

A E Phi Sensation (Johannesburg - First Lady Blue by A. P. Indy) took the early money, but the entry of Private Sale (Thunder Gulch - Excellent Future by Royal Academy) and Mis Vizcaya (Successful Appeal - Look for Good by Unbridled's Song) was favored at post time. Par Lady (Borrego - Cape Town Lass by Horse Chestnut (SAF)), the first-timer by Borrego, wasn't given much of a chance at 35-1. Mis Vizcaya was a little aggravated as they put the saddle on. Raised With Pride (Proud Citizen - Raise Her Flag by Harlan) caught my eye in the paddock. A E Phi Sensation had good energy on the track, and Aphrodite Storm (Roar of the Tiger - Grandma Nena by Montbrook) looked ready, but I still thought Raised With Pride looked best. At the gate, Mis Vizcaya dumped her rider. They loaded her after some time sans jockey. They rest of the field appeared to be standing nicely. The start was fairly even, except for Mis Vizcaya, who half-reared and lost her rider (on the replay, you can see her rider go backwards as the field breaks). The assistant rider took hold and she did not join the field. On the early lead was Include Me Sir (Include - Sir Harriett by Sir Harry Lewis), who came up the rail to snag that spot from A E Phi Sensation. They stayed that way for awhile. In the stretch, Include Me Sir began to fade and A E Phi Sensation appeared poised to take charge. But, Raised With Pride came rolling on the outside to draw off for a nice 3 3/4 length victory. On the scene late was Par Lady, who took the show spot. Interestingly, the three experienced fillies in the race finished 6th, 7th, and didn't get out of the gate. There was a stewards inquiry regarding the start, but no action was taken. I wonder if Mis Vizcaya would have been declared a non-starter if she hadn't been part of an entry. Watch the Replay.
