Hula Dances to Victory
I journeyed to Churchill Downs, to see the debut of Texas Tempest (Bernardini - Copelan's Bid Gal by Copelan) in person. The AEs were scratched, as well as Kuhlu (Ghostzapper - Golden Antigua by Hansel). The track was fast, and the weather was hot. Maya's Mystery (Successful Appeal - Solid Platinum by Mr. Greeley), second in her first start, was favored. Texas Tempest wasn't getting much play at 16-1. However, Trainer Steve Asmussen was on hand to see her debut. She is a grand looking girl. Sassy's Dream (Flower Alley - Model Performer by Theatrical (IRE)), third runner for Flower Alley, looked good in the paddock. Wild Tizzy (Tiznow - Crazy Woman Creek by Wild Rush) took the early lead, with Maya's Mystery and Hula (Stormy Atlantic - Puestera by Forty Niner) in close pursuit. Sonja's Angel (Smoke Glacken - Fly Away Angel by Skip Away) was not far behind. Texas Tempest was around mid-pack early, but then began to retreat. She ended up 10th, defeating only Sassy's Dream, who stumbled at the start and never really got involved. Up front, Wild Tizzy began to tire. Hula took the lead, but Maya's Mystery was sticking with her. Neither gave an inch, but Hula got her nose in front at the wire. They were more than 6 lengths in front of Sonja's Angel. This was just a learning experience for Texas Tempest, she'll improve next time. Race 6 was also the last ride for jockey Larry Melancon, who finished 9th on War Clan (War Front - Ashley's Clan by Seattle Slew). Good luck to Larry with whatever he does with the rest of his life. Since I was at Churchill, I also got a look at Mine That Bird making his 4-year-old debut in the Firecracker Handicap. He looked dynamite in the paddock. He definitely has filled out, but there was debate amongst the paddock folks as to whether he has grown taller. He passed a couple late to finish 8th in the race, but it may just be that turf isn't his game. The winner was Tizdejavu, in another impressive front-running performance. Watch
the Replay. Read more about the Firecracker Handicap here.

There were also a number of our 3-year-olds in action Sunday at Churchill Downs. The best performances were delivered by Spicer (colt; Ghostzapper - Allspice by Coronado's Quest), who was 2nd in race 9, and Jeremy's Kitten (filly; Kitten's Joy - Wendy's Dream by Crafty Prospector), who was third in race 11. By the way, I did have two dollar hot dogs, but did not have any dollar
beer. I just don't enjoy beer when it's so hot.
