It's All Embellished

Dakota Sis (Eddington - Fancy Prancer by Bertrando) was scratched, leaving a field of 5. Smarty Jill (Smarty Jones - Vision in Flight by Montbrook) was the heavy favorite, Embellished (Bellamy Road - Birthright by Belong to Me) was 5-1. She had been defeated by Smarty Jill previously. They all looked pretty green at the start. Kennedy's Halo (Cape Canaveral - Crystal Halo by Halo) took the early lead, but went wide, allowing Smarty Jill to grab the top spot. Meanwhile, Embellished was in 4th early. Smarty Jill pulled several lengths free of the rest. Embellished began to come on, but Smarty Jill was still in control. Embellished continued to make up ground, moved even with Smarty Jill, and then went on by. She pulled away to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Smarty Jill was another 6 lengths in front of the rest. Embellished, who resembles her sire, is the third winner for Bellamy Road, and his first stakes winner.

Kathmanblu Them Away

Ms Anna Destiny (Anabaa - Limes 'n Lemons by Deputy Minister) was scratched, and the turf was firm. Trusecret (Yes It's True - Rebridled Secret by Unbridled) was a slight favorite over Kathmanblu (Bluegrass Cat - Abba Gold by Devil's Bag). Demure Halo (Quiet American - Mocita by Boundary) looked good in the paddock. Kathmanblu was ready for action. They all looked a little warm, but that is to be expected at Ellis Park in July. Lady Toccet (Toccet - Hidden Meaning by Gulch) was a bit of a problem child at the load. Neversaidiwassweet (Eurosilver - Surging Storm by Storm Creek) was off awkwardly. Gossiper (Eavesdropper - Hipster Dufus by Gold Spring (ARG)) was on the lead, but Kathmanblu wasn't far behind. Kathmanblu made her move just before the stretch, going even with, and then passing Gossiper. Neversaidiwassweet recovered from her off-balance start to gain second late. Trusecret was blocked and had to steady, settling for third. I was a little afraid that there would be a foul claim from Trusecret's jockey against Kathmanblu, but there was none. Kathmanblu looked good returning to the Winner's Circle. She is the 8th winner for Bluegrass Cat, and his first on the turf. Watch the Replay.

Smiles Ahead of Speed Demon

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Speed Demon (Bluegrass Cat - Celestial Legend by City Zip) was favored, and he looked ready. Smiles Ahead (Burbank - Tellyualittlestory by Coordinator) looked good in the paddock and on the track. Fast Freight (Champali - Classic Quality by Benchmark) was on the muscle. They got off to a good start, with Montellano (Top Hit - Erin by In Excess (IRE)) taking to the lead. Fast Freight went up to press the pacesetter, and then took command. Both Speed Demon and Smiles Ahead began moving, with Speed Demon on the inside and Smiles Ahead on the outside. Fast Freight hung around, however, and he and Smiles Ahead hit the wire as a team. Live, I thought Smiles Ahead won it, but the replay looked closer. The photo confirmed that Smiles Ahead's nose got to the line first. Speed Demon had no apparent excuse in third. Smiles Ahead did bump him as they began their moves, but apparently it was not enough to warrant a foul. Speed Demon now has 1 win, 1 second, and 3 thirds in 5 starts, with earnings of $62,012. Watch the Replay.

Flying High

There were no scratches. First-timer Descriptive (D'wildcat - Flipthescript by Boston Harbor) was favored. Also getting some attention at the windows was the entry of Sweet Margi (Margie's Wildcat - Cades Cove by Kayrawan) and Bear Naked (Sky Mesa - Boldest of All by Bold Executive). Ice Crystal (Henny Hughes - Seek by Devil's Bag) was nearly 15-1. Debuter I Fly High (High Fly - Shesabullwinkle by Hesabull) had some pep in the paddock. Bear Naked looked good on the track. Descriptive went for the early lead, pursued by I Fly High and Admitit (E Dubai - Fine Day (GB) by Fantastic Light). Ice Crystal was at the back. Descriptive continued to lead, but I Fly High had the inside position, and moved to the front on the turn. Sweet Margi and Bear Naked were both making runs, while Admitit was still in the mix. I Fly High held them all off to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Sweet Margi was a clear second, and Admitit and Bear Naked were a nose apart in third and fourth. Watch the Replay.

AE Miss Maggie Girl (Malibu Moon - Unhurried by Out of Place) got to run, and was made the favorite. She looked good in the paddock. Joyous Music (Bellamy Road - Pyrite Queen by Wavering Monarch) was 4-1. Beso Grande (Mass Media - Kiss for Kris by Kissin Kris) was a little reluctant to load. My Sunshine Gal (West Acre - Sunny Again by Awesome Again) took command early, with Luna Grande (Mass Media - Dream Lady Dream by Fortunate Prospect) and Miss Maggie Girl pressing. Joyous Music was in a good spot in fourth. My Sunshine Gal and Luna Grande pulled away from the rest of the fillies. They battled to the wire, with My Sunshine Gal getting the win by a neck. Carmen is a Valid Winner

The turf was firm and Abbie's Tern (Uncle Abbie - Artic Enchantress by Arctic Tern) was the only scratch. Favoritism bounced around a little. Kipahulu (Mingun - Haleakala (IRE) by Kris (GB)) was the early choice, but Dream Royal (Chapel Royal - Dream Gable by Winthrop) was favored at post time. Bellamy Class (Bellamy Road - Can't Buy Class by Elusive Quality) was 5-1. Final Wonder (Three Wonders - Clever Chatter by Hadif) made a favorable impression, and longshot Patty's Pride (Special Rate - Solo Rolo by Air Forbes Won) was catching my eye. Bellamy Class was a little reluctant to load. John Louis' Forum (Open Forum - Kristy's Marquetry by Marquetry) was on top early, followed by Scharlyn (Aeneas - Strawberry Runner by Strawberry Road (AUS)) and Dream Royal. Bellamy Class was up fairly close, but was wide; while Final Wonder was off slowly. Bellamy Class made a move to get closer, but was pushed wide by Scharlyn, who blew both of the turns. In the stretch, the whole complexion of the race changed. Stormin Missile (Golden Missile - Wekiva Storm by Wekiva Springs) surged to the lead, but Valid Carmen (Valid Expectations - Crosswicks Creek by Wild Rush) came up the inside to get the victory by a neck. Patty's Pride came on to finish third. Bellamy Class ended up in a deadheat for 9th. Watch the Replay.

A Truly Classy Win

Georgetown Grad (Congrats - Georgetown Gal by Silver Charm) was scratched, and the track was fast. Truly Classy (Silver Train - Interruption by Conquistador Cielo) was favored. Also getting some attention was Such a Sweet Girl (Proud and True - Forest Dunes by Green Forest). Those two had met previously, finishing 3rd and 4th. Lady Lak (Bluegrass Cat - Summerwood by Boston Harbor) was 30-1. There was quite a scramble for the early lead, Fashionable Elsa (Agnes Gold (JPN) - Fashionably Lite by Lite the Fuse) emerged with it. Cristal Jak (Drewman - Cherokee Racer by Cherokee Run), Truly Classy, Lady Lak, and Jill's Dancer (First Tour - Good Dancing by Robyn Dancer) were all up there. Truly Classy soon moved to the front, and Fashionable Elsa began to fade, as did Lady Lak. Jill's Dancer went after Truly Classy, but she couldn't catch her. Truly Classy held on by 1/2 lengths. Jill's Dancer was second, and Such a Sweet Girl rallied into third. Lady Lak ended up 10th (last). Truly Classy is the fourth winner for Silver Train. Watch the Replay.
