News and Notes

Le Mi Geaux (First Samurai - Message Red by Cryptoclearance) won the Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) at Saratoga, to become the first stakes winner for her sire First Samurai. Watch Replay. Read more about the Schuylerville here.

It was good to see Draw a Blank (filly; Saint Liam - Forget About It (IRE) by Be My Guest) back in the winner's circle, with an Allowance victory at Presque Isle Downs. Watch Replay. Draw a Blank was the first U.S. winner for Saint Liam back on July 1, 2009.

Two-Year-Old Results

Steven's Perfect

The track was sloppy, and Kaka (In Excess (IRE) - Ploesti Flight by Lucky North) was scratched. Stormin' On Home (February Storm - Homeland by Current Hope) was the early choice, but Garden Tour (Bluegrass Cat - Winter Garden by Roy) was favored at post time. He was looking pretty calm in the paddock. Stormin' On Home had some pep, maybe a little too much pep as his rider got aboard. Blue Frolic (Bachelor Blues - Fanny's Frolic by Green Dancer) is a striking gray, he caught my eye. The load was a bit of adventure. The wind was blowing, and the rattling gate was probably scaring these 2-year-olds. First, Hungry Wildcat (Margie's Wildcat - Lakefield Miss by Ordway) hesitated, then Cape Rico (Around the Cape - Canberra by Silver Hawk), and Blue Frolic. On the other hand, Joe Short Pants (B L's Appeal - Mi Santa by Saint Ballado) walked in like a pro. Stormin' On Home broke running, taking the early lead. He was pursued by Cape Rico. Garden Tour was off a beat slow, but soon moved into contention in fourth. In the stretch, Cape Rico got to the front. Garden Tour was moving well on the outside, but then began to weaken. Steven's Perfect (First Tour - Perfect Ten by Out of Place) came up the inside to grab the victory. Also gaining ground late was Hungry Wildcat, who just missed second. For what it's worth, Hungry Wildcat was much the best on the gallop out. Garden Tour ended up fourth, and was claimed out of the race. It will be interesting to see if they move him up in class. Joe Short Pants finished 6th, I'm thinking that he needs to go long. Watch the Replay.

Waving a Wise Goodbye

The only scratch was Silk of Sari (Indian Ocean - Minster Abbey by Dehere), part of an entry with Wrapped in Gold (Touch Gold - Miss Ginalie by Skip Away). The bettors had a little difficulty choosing, Surfer Rosa (Johar - Mujado (IRE) by Mujadil) was the slight choice at post time. She looked good to me. Bellamy Lass (Bellamy Road - Seraphic Too by Southern Halo) was 13-1. Bea's Hard Six (Vindication - Ever Elusive by Forestry) balked at the load. The break was pretty green for most. Eppi's Tigress (Hold That Tiger - Thunder Eppi by Thunder Gulch) took the worst of it, breaking awkwardly. Clear of this trouble was Wise Goodbyes (Wised Up - Millay by Cherokee Run), who went to the front. She was chased by Bea's Hard Six. Bellamy Lass was at the back. Wise Goodbyes continued to lead, and then really poured it on in the stretch. She moved farther and farther ahead, securing a 10 length victory. Candy Pass (Candy Ride (ARG) - Fortunate Pass by Fortunate Prospect) moved into second, and Surfer Rosa was a non-threatening third. Bellamy Lass never really got rolling, finishing 7th. It was an impressive victory for Wise Goodbyes, but so many had trouble at the break, that I'd give them all another shot. Watch the Replay.
