News and Notes

Congratulations to 4-year-old gelding Precious Beans (Medaglia d'Oro - Precious Feather by Gone West) and all of his connections: Owner and Breeder: Jacks or Better Farm, Trainer: Stanley Gold, and Jockey: Jeffrey Sanchez. Precious Beans rallied late to just pass Enormiso in the final strides, to break his maiden in the first race Thursday at Calder, a 6.5 furlong Maiden Claiming contest. It was his 20th start. In addition to his victory, Precious Beans has also finished second twice and third seven times, while earning $41,115. Precious Beans is one of my favorite horses from the first year of Maiden Watch, 2008. Watch the Replay.

Maple Forest Flows Through the Slop

The track was sloppy (sealed), and Inflation Hedge (Badge of Silver - Royal Veagess by Rock Royalty) and the AEs were scratched. Playing Pirates (Distorted Humor - Be Gentle by Tale of the Cat), the only experienced filly, was favored. Also getting play were Cedar Grove (Speightstown - Serenita (ARG) by Southern Halo) and Elusive Raven (Elusive Quality - Summer Raven by Summer Squall), the half sister to Winslow Homer. Thatagirl (Henny Hughes - Miss Bridget Jones by Peaks and Valleys) was 29-1. Simply Delightful (Speightstown - Above Perfection by In Excess (IRE)), the half sister to Hot Dixie Chick, looked good in the paddock. Upper East Sider (Forest Wildcat - Upper Noosh by Red Ransom) had some bounce in her step. In the post parade, Thatagirl was shaking her head and then did a half-rear. Playing Pirates looked good on the track. The load was pretty smooth, but Upper East Sider was acting up a bit before the break. Maple Forest (Forestry - Maple Syrple by American Chance) broke best, with Elusive Raven and Playing Pirates chasing her. Arabian Song (Forestry - Prima Centauri by Distant View) swerved out at the break, bothering Thatagirl. That effectively was the end of the race for Thatagirl, who did pass one to finish 8th. Up front, the top three continued in the same order. Elusive Raven did cut the margin a bit late, but she was no threat to Maple Forest, who won easily. In turn, Elusive Raven was clear of Playing Pirates, who did have to work a bit to hold third over Simply Delightful. Overall, there was very little change in position in this race, no one was making up ground on the sloppy track. Watch the Replay.

Myrtle Creeps to Victory

The race was taken off of the turf and run at a mile and a sixteenth on the Polytrack. Inside Deal (More Than Ready - No Mud On Me by Great Above) was favored, with second choice to Catch That Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Caught in a Pinch by Stormy Atlantic). Bluegrass Dream (Bluegrass Cat - Dreambride by Unbridled's Song) was 7-1. She is a long legged gray, and was a late scratch in the race. Wildcat Miss (Margie's Wildcat - Miss Flame Thrower by Flame Thrower) looked good on the track. The load was fairly routine, although Catch That Kitten acted up a bit in the gate. Wildcat Miss was on top early, with Sweet Tizzy Lizzy (Tiznow - Sweet November by Storm Cat) keeping her company. Catch That Kitten was just off of these in third, and Inside Deal was a close fourth. Sweet Tizzy Lizzy came up the inside of Wildcat Miss, and that one began to retreat. Catch That Kitten moved even with Sweet Tizzy Lizzy and those two dueled. But, Crepe Myrtle (Purge - Myrtle Beach by Kingmambo) was coming. She and Sweet Tizzy Lizzy finished together, with Catch That Kitten a neck back in third. The photo showed that Crepe Myrtle's nose hit the wire first, and she earned a trip to the Winner's Circle. I can't imagine that Sweet Tizzy Lizzy will be a maiden for long, however, as she is quite the battler. Watch the Replay.

Franny Freud is a filly that will be missed. As a fan of Afleet Alex, these horses leave racing too soon for us to enjoy a great future. Their safety must come first, they deserve that. But we can relish in the fact that Franny Freud will have the smell of the beautiful bluegrass of Kentucky and will not be injured further. I enjoyed her races.  Have a great life Franny, from Fran!

Great news for Bernardini fans........his colt Biondetti, out of Lyphard's Delta, beat 17 others in pretty nice maiden race at Newmarket. This is now 2 grass winners for Bernardini  - which is very encouraging and, for me, surprising.  He's not nominated to any big races yet, but Simon Crisford is quoted on the Racing Post site (right before the race) that he's a nice horse.  I didn't see the race, by the way - just followed it on the Racing Post site.

Betsy -

You can see a replay of the race here: horses.sportinglife.com/.../Racing

Biondetti was involved from the beginning, staying clear of the 17-horse fray from his 2-hole.

More family notes for Biondetti can be seen above.

Thanks! Both he and Theysken's Theory seem have have speed - I get the feeling this colt is a bit green. Crisford did imply that he would improve with experience......Now, if only AZ Warrior would win the Sorrento.....

darn.........so close. AZ Warrior ran really well to finish 3rd (I think) in the Sorrento. She closed from off the pace this time......nice that she's versatile. Bernardini is off to a fine start.

Betsy - A Z Warrior was 2nd in the Sorrento. Not Bad.

anna

so the spitfire filly wickedly perfect won the sorrento. i remember she careening across the paddock and launching her jockey like a airborne missile before her debut win a few weeeks ago. her name certainly suits her since she was wicked in the paddock although i know she was spooked but it's no fun being on one who spooks and sends you skyhigh. over something stupid.

a z warrior was her own worst enemy in the race since she ran greenly to me

Betsy

Anna, she really ran very well.......I will be happy for WP later (love Congrats, love any AP Indy, lol), but now I'm sort of disappointed and happy, lol.

I wish I could address the BH staff member by name - is it Jason? - 2nd place = $30, 000.00. That's a nice chunk of change.......and a stakes placing is great for this filly. I'm sure Bob was pleased; I'm looking forward to hearing his post-race quotes.
