Too Shmooz for Cat Sweep

News and Notes

Stay Thirsty (Bernardini - Marozia by Storm Bird) received an 81 Beyer for his 5+ length maiden victory at Saratoga on August 14.

As predicted, Biondetti (colt; Bernardini - Lyphard's Delta by Lyphard) did not run in the 7 furlong group III Acomb stakes at York. The winner was Waiter's Dream (GB) (Oasis Dream (GB) - Sarah Georgina (IRE) by Persian Bold (IRE)). He is a half brother to 5 winners, including stakes winner Lord Jim and group III winner Audacieuse. Waiter's Dream sold for $141,426 as a yearling.

The named 2-year-old lists have all been updated. My favorite addition is the Bernardini filly Sophia's Curves, out of grade I winner Miss Loren.

Best named winner of the day in my opinion: 2-year-old filly On a Jet Plane (The Bold Bruiser - Littlemishonkytonk by Wave as You Go By), who broke her maiden in her first start, a 5 furlong race at my old stomping ground Fairmount Park.

Two-Year-Old Result

Too Shmooz for Cat Sweep

There were no scratches, and the Tapeta was fast, as always. First-timer Rescue Financing (Johannesburg - Lullaby by Unbridled's Song) was favored at 4-5, but Cat Sweep (Bluegrass Cat - Nany's Sweep by End Sweep) and entrymate Inspector Morse (Consolidator - One Eye Love by Quiet American) received some respect at almost 3-1. Cat Sweep looked ready. Grunt (Proud Citizen - Voisey Bay by Crafty Prospector) made a good appearance in the paddock, although the Proud Citizens usually look good to me. Debuter Suave Fox (Suave - Shesastonecoldfox by Foxhound) caught my eye on the track. The load was pretty smooth. Zealous Yankee (Yankee Gentleman - Zealous Folia by Unreal Zeal) went to the front, with Shmooz Talker (Bernstein - Let's Shmooz by French Deputy) and Suave Fox pressing. Cat Sweep secured a nice spot from his inside post. Favorite Rescue Financing was not far off, but he was wide. Zealous Yankee began to weaken in the stretch, as Shmooz Talker assumed command. Cat Sweep was angled out to make his bid. He was gaining on Shmooz Talker, but the wire came up too quickly. Shmooz Talker got the win, with Cat Sweep a neck back in second. These two were more than 5 ahead of third-place Zealous Yankee. I didn't see any excuse for the favorite Rescue Financing. He just didn't seem to be able to quicken when the real running began, and finished 5th. The bettors seem to be enamored of horses who have prepped out of town (Rescue Financing had been training at Arlington), but experienced Presque Isle runners filled the superfecta. Watch the Replay.
