News and Notes

Sad news on the day, as Flo's Henny (Henny Hughes - Clairlyn by Bold Executive) broke down in race 7 at Woodbine, and was euthanized. This Time (Henny Hughes - Switch Lanes by Deerhound) was pulled up after checking to avoid rider Emma-Jayne Wilson, who had been aboard Flo's Henny. Wilson walked off the track under her own power, but was taken to the hospital. She did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries, but was having some tests done. The winner of the race was Kombat Kitty (Wildcat Heir - Kombat Kate by Fit to Fight).

Two-Year-Old Results

One Fast Car

The track was fast. Debbie's Ferrari (Henny Hughes - Silver and Jade by Jade Hunter) was heavily favored at the first flash of the tote board, but Giacomina (Matty G - Persephonie by Conquistador Cielo) was the choice at post time. Giacomina looked good on the track, and Debbie's Ferrari looked ready for action. Bottled Lightning (He's Tops - Prize and Joy by Fly So Free) objected a bit at the load. Mariah's Juke Box (Tribunal - Born to Be Blue by Lasting Value) and Tweetie Pie (Yes It's True - New York Jessica by Phone Trick) both acted up in the gate, and Mariah's Juke Box was a late scratch. They backed the other horses out, and the jockeys hopped off during the delay. Finally, they were back in and off. Debbie's Ferrari went for the lead, but Bottled Lightning came up the rail to grab it. Debbie's Ferrari got back to the lead, and put Bottled Lightning away. But, Tweetie Pie was coming. For a moment, it looked as though Tweetie Pie would go on by, but Debbie's Ferrari rebroke and pulled away again, for a 1 3/4 length win. Debbie's Ferrari is winner number four for Henny Hughes. Rory's Dividend Outruns Runbellamyrun

The track was upgraded from sloppy to muddy just before this race. Royal Marque (Chapel Royal - Papier Mache by Marquetry) was scratched. Debuting Inclined to Dream (Aptitude - Society Dream (FR) by Akarad (FR)) took the early money, but Rory's Dividend (Eurosilver - Da's Mimi by Imperial Falcon) was favored at post time. Runbellamyrun (Bellamy Road - Byebyebabybyebye by Glitterman) was 6-1. She looked ready to run. Rory's Dividend was feisty in the paddock, and Orient Sky (Orientate - Try in the Sky by Air Forbes Won) made a good impression. Flashy Pants (Hold That Tiger - Tricktor by Favorite Trick) was a little reluctant to load. Inclined to Dream reared, and was briefly loose behind the gate. Finally, they were all in. Rory's Dividend broke running and went to the lead. Runbellamyrun took after her. These two continued 1-2 throughout. In the stretch, Rory's Dividend began to pull away, and she went on to win by 5 1/2 lengths. Runbellamyrun was another 7 lengths in front of the rest. Watch the Replay.

J. B Thunders Home

The turf was firm. Beachcombing (Lemon Drop Kid - Zelmira by Deputy Minister) was scratched, allowing AE Bonaroo (Dynaformer - Hard to Copy by Mr. Prospector) to get into the race. AE entrant Love That Dude (Rey de Cafe - Atrial Flutter by Lear Fan) stayed in the barn. Mr Tribute (El Corredor - Amandas Bandit by Royal Academy) was favored, Bluegrass Jet (Bluegrass Cat - License Free by Miswaki) was 18-1. Bonaroo looked good going to the track, and J. B.'s Thunder (Thunder Gulch - Rebridled Dreams by Unbridled's Song) made a favorable impression on the track. Fly On the Wall (Artie Schiller - Beautiful by Rahy) unseated his rider and took off. He was a late scratch. Bluegrass Jet had some spring in his step as they moved onto the turf course. The break was decent. J. B.'s Thunder and Santiva (Giant's Causeway - Slide by Smarten) went for the lead, with J. B's Thunder getting it. Bonaroo made a move to take second, pressing J. B.'s Thunder. Liondrive (Lion Tamer - Outta the Park by Grand Slam) also moved into contention. Bluegrass Jet was at the back. J. B's Thunder continued to lead, spurting 3 lengths free. Santiva made up some ground late, but he couldn't catch J. B's Thunder, who won by 1 3/4 lengths. Bluegrass Jet did some running late to finish 5th, just a neck from 4th. Watch the Replay.

Jenna's Lemon Squeezes By

This was a strange one. I pulled up Twinspires.com and R Fast Cat (Bluegrass Cat - R Fast Lady by Artax) was listed as scratched. But, the Ellis Park feed showed him as still in the race. Then, I got a notice from Equibase informing me that he was scratched. But, there he was in the paddock. Definitely scratched from the race were Kasstoofast (Black Mambo - Cutlass Cat by Exploit) and Hurricane Lake (Friends Lake - Hurricane Rose by Distinctive Cat). Grant Jack (Harlan's Holiday - Dream Away by St. Jovite) was the early choice, but Jenna's Lemon (Wiseman's Ferry - Plucky Broad by Holy Bull) was preferred at post time. R Fast Cat was 6-1. Matt's Mammajammer (Canadian Frontier - Take Time for Lisa by Lyphard's Wish (FR)) was jamming to the bugler playing Rocky Top, as the horses moved on to the track. Some of the field looked wet, but that is not surprising at Ellis Park in August. There was a bit of a scramble for early lead, Double Clutch (Consolidator - Sweet Bernadette by Jules), Fastest Cat (Bernstein - Foundit by Seeking the Gold), Pinch Hitter (Vindication - Solid Eight by Fit to Fight), and Cross Lake (Songandaprayer - Luxury On the Lake by Salt Lake) were all involved. They took turns leading until the stretch, when Transaction (Five Star Day - Bailey's Harbor by Cure the Blues) took over. However, he could not hold off Jenna's Lemon late, as he pulled away for a 2 1/4 length triumph. R Fast Cat was outrun early, but passed some late to finish 5th. Watch the Replay.

A Roundabout Victory

The track was fast, and there were no scratches. First-timer Grandacious (Grand Slam - Kirsten Doll by Capote) was favored. I liked the look of another debuter Roundabout Lass (Seneca Jones - Royal Roundabout by Superoyale). Bellamy Class (Bellamy Road - Can't Buy Class by Elusive Quality) was 12-1. She was a little wet in the post parade. Hail Yes (Yes It's True - Palace Wildcat by Forest Wildcat) went to the front, with Grandacious and Quite Sharp (Sharp Humor - Search Light by Metfield) sticking close. Roundabout Lass was in a good position in fourth. She moved to the outside in the stretch, and swept to the lead. She pulled away to win by 3 lengths. Quite Sharp and Grandacious finished together, just a nose apart in second and third. Bellamy Close was in mid-pack most of the way, finishing 6th. Watch the Replay.

Three-Year-Old Stakes Results

Two fillies were scratched from the Danepak Atalanta Stakes, leaving a field of 6. The race was delayed when favorite Decorative (IRE) (Danehille Dancer (IRE) - Source of Life (IRE) by Fasliyev) required a shoe fix. Flora Trevelyan (GB) (Cape Cross (IRE) - Why So Silent (GB) by Mill Reef) took command early. Long Lashes (Rock Hard Ten - Border Dispute by Boundary), who was adding cheekpieces, was in a good position on the rail. Seta (GB) (Pivotal (GB) - Bombazine (IRE) by Generous (IRE) took after Flora Trevelyan in the stretch. Long Lashes was ready to go too, but had nowhere to run. Seta seemed to stall a little as she drew even with Flora Trevelyan, but was slowly getting by. Frankie Dettori swung Long Lashes out, and she took after Seta. These two hit the wire together, but Seta was able to hold off Long Lashes by a slim margin. Still, good runs from both fillies.

Havre de Grace (filly; Saint Liam - Easter Bunnette by Carson City) finished second to Blind Luck again, this time the margin was a neck in the Alabama Stakes (gr. I). Havre de Grace may not have as much talent as Blind Luck, but she sure keeps trying. Somewhere, there is a stakes with her name on it. Read more about the Alabama here.

Dean's Kitten (colt; Kitten's Joy - Summer Theatre by Ide) finished 5th in the Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT), as Paddy O' Prado delivered another impressive performance. Read more about the Secretariat here.

of the 3rd place finisher of Saratoga's race 8 yesterday. I thought Legend of Navarone ran a good race but you left him out of your write up. Is it because he is not sired by one of the featured sires? I think that War Front is doing well as a 1st year sire.

AnneM - I had 5 recaps yesterday, I can't mention every horse. Plus, I am pretty busy on Saturdays with other duties. It has nothing to do with the fact that Legend of Navarone is not by one of our sires. Please feel free to comment on any horse in any race that you thought ran well, regardless of whether I mention them.
