Embellishing a Theory

News and Notes

Congratulations to Afleet Express (colt; Afleet Alex - Expanse by Distant View) and all his connections for a very exciting win in the Travers Stakes (gr. I). And, not a bad effort from Afleet Again (colt; Afleet Alex - Lucky Again by Wild Again), who was 4th at 47-1. He seemed to just get going after a mile and a quarter. Any 2 mile races out there? The third Afleet Alex in the race, Admiral Alex (colt; Afleet Alex - Madam Lagonza by Kingmambo), finished last. He should rebound in a non-winners of one other than Allowance. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Travers here.

An impressive debut victory for Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie - Playa Maya by Arch) in the 5th at Saratoga. He went to the lead and moved farther and farther away from the rest. The final margin was 14 1/4 lengths. Owned by Repole Stable, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, he's headed for stakes company next. Watch the Replay.

Stakes Results

Theyskens' Theory (filly; Bernardini - Heat Lightning by Summer Squall) went right to the lead in the group III Chichester Observer Prestige Stakes run on soft ground at Goodwood. Both Cape Dollar (IRE) (Cape Cross (IRE) - Green Dollar (IRE) by Kingmambo) and Cochabamba (IRE) (Hurricane Run (IRE) - Bolivia by Distant View) made runs at her, but Theyskens' Theory had plenty left. She cruised to an easy victory to become the first stakes winner for Bernardini. Date With Destiny (IRE) (George Washington (IRE) - Flawlessly (FR) by Rainbow Quest) didn't have much impact, beating one. Perhaps she did not care for the soft going. Watch the Replay (Note that the replay page defaults to the most recent race. The easiest way to find the race is to select the "Search By Horse" tab and search for Theyskens' Theory).

Embellished (filly; Bellamy Road - Birthright by Belong to Me) pressed the early pace, and then took off in the Bird of Pay Stakes at Northlands Park, winning by 7 easy lengths to score her second stakes victory. She now has 2 wins and 1 third in three starts, and has earned $58,279. I'm not sure what she's beating, but she sure looks good doing it.

Bluegrass Bull (colt; Bluegrass Cat - La Gomera (IRE) by Hamas (IRE)) finished third in the Seacliff Stakes at Calder. He was no match for the top 2, but he was 8 lengths clear of the rest of the field. Watch the Replay.

A Laser Shot

There were no scratches, and 8 ran including the Bluegrass Cat entry of Blue Laser (Bluegrass Cat - With a Princess by With Approval) and Cobalt Cat (Bluegrass Cat - Afternoon Dreams by Afternoon Deelites). Rockin Heat (Rock Hard Ten - Makin Heat by Makin) was the heavy favorite, the entry was second-choice at 5-2. They both looked good on the track. Gold Dreamer (Gold Missile - Eastern Star by Star de Naskra) had some spring in his step. The start was even. Gold Dreamer went to the front. Blue Laser was tracking the pace, and Cobalt Cat was at the back. Blue Laser moved past Gold Dreamer on the turn, but Rockin Heat was looming. Rockin Heat made his bid and took the lead, but he couldn't shake Blue Laser. They dueled for a time, but then Blue Laser gained command again, winning by a clear length. Cobalt Cat was on the scene late to pick up third. Blue Laser is the 13th winner for Bluegrass Cat. Watch the Replay.

Alexandra Takes Kerfuffle

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Blazing Along (Medaglia d'Oro - Valkyries' Ride by Dixieland Band), the California invader, was favored. The buzz horse was debuter Alexandra Rylee (Afleet Alex - Sira by Capote), who went off at just under 3-1, way below her morning line. Kerfuffle (Henny Hughes - Stormy Blues by Cure the Blues) was 32-1. But, she looked good on the track, off by herself. Missyoulikecrazy (Lion Heart - Seattle Way by Seattle Slew) made a good appearance in the paddock. Promise Me a Cat (D'wildcat - Promise Me Magic by Pentelicus) had some bounce in her step. The load was fairly smooth, Malibu Cougar (Malibu Moon - More Than Pretty by More Than Ready) balked a bit, and Alexandra Rylee needed some persuading. The break was good for all except Kerfuffle, who walked out of the gate and trailed the field by a couple of lengths. There was a scramble up front, Alexandra Rylee, Promise Me a Cat, Blazing Along, With the Current (Mr. Greeley - Kresgeville by Bertrando), and Five Mach Speed (E Dubai - Chatta Code by Lost Code) all went for the lead. But, it was Alexandra Rylee who emerged on top, with Promise Me a Cat in pursuit. They stayed this way to the finish, with Alexandra Rylee holding her rival at bay. Kerfuffle finished 5th after her earlier adventure, which wasn't a bad showing. Watch the Replay.

Forum Showing Good Form

The turf was firm and the only scratch was MTO Gospel Lesson (Pulpit - Royal Bean by Royal Academy). Nolangrant'skitten (Kitten's Joy - Single Goer by Easy Goer) was favored, and Peb Hughes (Henny Hughes - Race Artist by Mr. Prospector) was dismissed at 17-1. Nolangrant'skitten was jumpy on the track. Peb Hughes looked good. The loading was a bit of an adventure, with so many first-timers. Beachcombing (Lemon Drop Kid - Zelmira by Deputy Minister) went in and came back out. He went in again, but the jockey hopped off. I thought it was an advantage for the experienced Peb Hughes when the others were acting squirrelly, but then he decided to balk. Big Bentley (Johannesburg - Mountain Mambo by Mt. Livermore), who had been sprinting on the turf, went to the front. He was tracked by Volcker (War Front - La Pascua (SWI) by Caerleon) and Forum (Roman Ruler - Winner's High by High Yield), with Nolangrant'skitten and Johnny Two by Four (Yes It's True - Tappin for Gold by Pleasant Tap) not too far off. Peb Hughes was near the back. Volcker made a move in the stretch, and surged to the lead, but Forum was coming. He jumped by Volcker late for the victory. These 2 were more than 5 in front of tiring pacesetter Big Bentley. On the scene late was the regally bred Gold Trader (Johannesburg - Educated Risk by Mr. Prospector), who finished 4th. He should be one to watch next time. However, you probably won't get 20-1. Watch the Replay.

Starship Crystal Launches

The grass was firm. Take It Away (Put It Back - Legendary Hit by Gold Legend) was scratched, allowing AE Vital Victory (Bwana Charlie - Victory Chime by Polish Numbers) to run. The other AE, Mint Martini (Boastful - Mintess by Kris S.), and MTO Tiz the Argument (Closing Argument - Tiz Victoria by Tiznow) were out. Shawarma (Giacomo - Carson's Baby by Carson City) took the early money, but Such a Sweet Girl (Proud and True - Forest Dunes by Green Forest) was favored at post time. Sacred Class (Rockport Harbor - Queen Evelyn by Hennessy) was 5-1. She made a decent appearance on the track. Raceabithea (Smart Strike - Entendu by Diesis (GB)) caught my eye. Lots of bumping at the start. Sacred Class had to steady to avoid the contact. Floatnpastya (Peace Rules - Big Red Float by Bianconi) went to the front, putting a couple of lengths on the field. Raceabithea and My Gal Jenna (Black Mambo - Mighty Patriot by First Patriot) were the closest competition. Sacred Class was off the pace, but in a good spot. Raceabithea made her move in the stretch and took the lead, but My Gal Jenna and Starship Crystal (Congrats - Great Impulse by Imperial Falcon) were coming. Starship Crystal made her bid, catching Raceabithea late. They finished together, but Starship Crystal had her nose in front. Interesting that the only 2 debut runners in the race finished 1-2. Luna Grande Victory

The track was fast, and there were no scratches. Favoritism bounced around a bit, settling on Cosmic Song (Concerto - Cosmic Light by Wheaton). Joyous Music (Bellamy Road - Pyrite Queen by Wavering Monarch) was 7-2. She looked nice on the track, and jumped to the lead. She was soon 4 lengths in front. The pack began to catch up, however, led by My Precious Baby (With Distinction - Laurica by Tactical Advantage), who overcame a stumbling start. Making a big run was Luna Grande (Mass Media - Dream Lady Dream by Fortunate Prospect), who swept to the lead. She passed the wire more than 2 lengths in front of My Precious Baby, who was another 2 lengths ahead of Nofashionsense (Sweetsouthernsaint - Fashion Maven by Mt. Livermore), closing for third. Joyous Music tired and finished 8th. Luna Grande is the 6th winner for Mass Media. This was the third time that Luna Granda had finished in front of Joyous Music.
