Making a Point to Kathmanblu

The turf was turf, so MTOs Sky Hosoya (Bluegrass Cat - T. K. O. Lady by Two Punch) and Let's Get Fiscal (Bandini - Bouvet by Touch Gold) were scratched. Also scratched was Dos Lunas (Hennessy - Mi Luna Nueva by El Prado (IRE)), who finished second in the Junior Champion Stakes at Monmouth on August 29. Maiden Believe in A. P. (A. P. Indy - I Believe in You by Pleasant Tap) opened up at 3-2. She drifted up to 2-1 at post time, but was still the favorite. Arch Support (Arch - Two Ninety Jones by Sir Harry Lewis), who had finished in front of Believe in A. P. last time out, was almost 7-1. She made a good impression in the paddock. Kathmanblu (Bluegrass Cat - Abba Gold by Devil's Bag) was dismissed at almost 16-1, but she looked good to me. Plus, I thought that they must have a reason for trying a stakes at Saratoga after her maiden score at Ellis Park. Fancy Point (Point Given - Fancy Clancy by Rahy) had some spunk in the paddock, and dumped jockey Javier Castellano before the load. But, she came out running and went to the front. Kathmanblu got off to a rough start, lunging and then bumping with Lauren Byrd (Arch - Strike the Sky by Smart Strike), and trailed the field. Fancy Point put some lengths between herself and the field, with Pleine Forme (Grand Slam - Why Worry (FR) by Cadeaux Genereux (GB)) leading the rest of the pack. Both Pleine Forme and Lauren Byrd made runs at Fancy Point in the stretch, but she bounded away from them. Suddenly, Kathmanblu emerged on the scene. She weaved her way through the fillies to move into contention. She couldn't catch pacesetter Fancy Point, who broke her maiden with this stakes win, but Kathmanblu flew past the rest to add stakes-placed to her resume. Watch the Replay.

In Command

All 6 ran, and the track was fast. First-timer Commander (Broken Vow - Pout by Deputy Minister) was the buzz horse, taking all the early money. But, Sky Wars (Sky Mesa - Kiss Me Twice by Kissin Kris) also received some of the bettors' attention. Jinjalad (Bellamy Road - Maria Dolores by Prized) was almost 18-1. The load was pretty smooth. Jinjalad and Sky Wars went for the lead. Jinjalad won that battle, but Sky Wars was pressuring. Jinjalad was a little rank. Commander was just behind the top two. After 6 furlongs, both Sky Wars and Commander went by Jinjalad. Sky Wars hung with Commander for a time, but Commander began to pull away. He got the victory, despite running greenly in the stretch. We may be hearing more about this one. Finishing together in second and third were Big Mack Daddy (Johannesburg - Hooked On Niners by Mr. Greeley) and Argentine Talisman (Dehere - Tifonica (ARG) by Equalize), who both finished well. Jinjalad tired to 5th. Watch the Replay.

Fancy Point looked sharp breaking her maiden.  If Point Given had buttons, he would be popping them with pride...."runs just like the old man!"
