A Z Warrior (filly; Bernardini - Carson Jen by Carson City) was in a decent position early on in the Darley Debutante (gr. I), and seemed poised to make a run in the stretch, but lacked a little kick at the end. She finished 5th. The winner was Tell a Kelly (Tapit - Evrobi by Tabasco Cat), who displayed an impressive turn of foot at the finish to win by 4 1/2 lengths. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Debutante here.

Another Silver Oak (Bluegrass Cat - Off the Richter by Richter Scale) chased the early pace in the Sapling Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park, but tired and finished 8th (last). Chasing the pacesetter was a futile endeavor, as Madman Diaries (Bring the Heat - Harper N Abbey by Outflanker) went gate-to-wire for the victory. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Sapling here.

May Day May Day

Magic Carpet (Montbrook - Rebooked by Notebook) was scratched. May Day Rose (Rockport Harbor - May Day Bluff by Pine Bluff) was the heavy favorite. Retail (Bluegrass Cat - Jill Robin L by Precocity) was 20-1, and McDuffie (Henny Hughes - Jetinto Houston by Houston) was close to 46-1. May Day Rose looked like a favorite should. Weekend Party (A. P. Indy - Wakigoer by Miswaki) had some spunk in the paddock. Retail acted up in the paddock, and continued to be on edge on the track. Her jockey hopped off for the load, and Retail needed some heavy persuading to get in the gate. May Day Rose was a little fidgety. McDuffie broke outward, and that was pretty much the end of the race for her. May Day Rose went to the front, establishing a clear lead. River's Mambo (Indian Charlie - Jersey Mambo by Kingmambo) and Hey Maria (Maria's Mon - Majority Whip by Gulch) set out after May Day Rose. Retail was in a decent position in fourth. May Day Rose continued on an easy lead into the stretch. Candid Ride (Candy Ride (ARG) - Flying Tigress by Mountain Cat) took a run at her, but May Day Rose held sway, despite drifting a bit. May Day Rose is the fifth winner for Rockport Harbor. Watch the Replay.

Astrology Honors and Serves

Scotus (Successful Appeal - Devine by Seattle Slew) was scratched, allowing AE entrant Whistlin' Dixie (Dixie Union - Innes by A. P. Indy) to run. AE Gallant Dreams (Bernardini - Dreams Gallore by Silver Ghost) was left on the sidelines. A full-field of 14 ran on the fast track, as the rain began. Astrology (A. P. Indy - Quiet Eclipse by Quiet American) was favored, with Anthony's Cross (Indian Charlie - Screening by Unbridled) just a tick higher. To Honor and Serve (Bernardini - Pilfer by Deputy Minister) was respected at 6-1. He's a nice looking boy. Punster (Distorted Humor - Victory U. S. A. by Victory Gallop) was on his toes, and favorite Astrology looked good on the track. Anthony's Cross got a strong warm-up. The load wasn't too bad, despite the full field with many first-timers. Praetereo (Giant's Causeway - Deb's Charm by Silver Charm) got a shove in the gate, Dr. Tom G (Broken Vow - Lelander by Cherokee Run) was a little skittish, and Economic Summit (Malibu Moon - Summit Lite by Mt. Livermore) was acting up. To Honor and Serve was left at the break, but was able to snake up the rail and get to the front. However, favorite Astrology was tracking him. Those two continued 1-2 into the stretch, when Astrology moved ahead of To Honor and Serve. As he pulled away, Astrology crossed in front of To Honor and Serve, who had to briefly check. Anthony's Cross was gaining at the end, taking third. There was a stewards' inquiry and a jockey claim of foul concerning the stretch run, but the results stood. It was a very game performance by To Honor and Serve, who hopefully won't draw the rail next time. Watch the Replay.

Just Chillin and Winnin

There were no scratches, as 8 ran on the fast track. Kitchenman (Wildcat Heir - Lovely Candles by Grand Slam) opened up at 2-5, and only drifted up a little from there. Malicious (Rockport Harbor - My Allegiance by Exploit) was 17-1. He looked a little clueless to me. Second-choice Soldier's Tune (Concorde's Tune - Jessica Bush by Lost Soldier) looked good. Urban Tiger (Roar of the Tiger - Olivia's Affair by Pentelicus) balked a bit at the load, Malicious was standing quietly. Urban Tiger, Soldier's Tune, and Just Chillin Boss (Sweetsouthernsaint - Aleutian Gold by Prospectors Gamble) were fighting for the early lead. Malicious was near the back. Soldier's Tune moved to the lead, but he couldn't hold off Just Chillin Boss, who pulled away for a nice 3 1/4 length victory. No one was gaining much in this one, although Sargeant of Arms (Sabre d'Argent - Higher Learning by Fappiano) did pick up some places late to take fourth. Malicious finished 6th. However, he did finish in front of favorite Kitchenman. Watch the Replay.

An Excessive Tale

Flawless Jewel (With Distinction - Hollie's Entre by Formal Dinner) and Dazzling Display (Dehere - Friend of a Friend by Crafty Friend) were scratched, leaving a field of 7 to run on the Polytrack. Tales in Excess (Tale of the Cat - Excess's Best by In Excess (IRE)) was favored, and looked the part. Miss Radiance (Yes It's True - Radiant Glow by War Chant) was also an eye-catcher. Real Rockport (Rockport Harbor - Newhall Road by Dixieland Band) was 32-1. Zazu (Tapit - Rhumb Line by Mr. Greeley) was a little on edge in the post parade. Real Rockport hopped at the start, and trailed the field. Tiz the Route (Tiznow - Short Route by Mud Route) broke inward. Tales in Excess went to the front, with Zazu and Miss Radiance in pursuit. They stayed in this order throughout, but the margins changed, as Tales in Excess pulled farther and farther ahead. She finished 4 1/2 lengths ahead. Real Rockport never got going, trailing the whole way. Watch the Replay.

AZ Warrior disappointed me, but To Honor and Serve did not - I can't think of another time where I was annoyed an AP Indy won, lol. I really think Mott's colt is better than Astrology - and will be down the line. I'm looking forward to his next start.
