News and Notes

Look West (Bluegrass Cat - Twirlaway by Unbridled) was bucking and kicking when he came on the track for the post parade of his race at Ellis Park. Soon, they announcement was made that he was loose on the track, and then he was a late scratch. The winner was Winchill (Tapit - Exclusive Hold by Phone Trick), who took it easily, despite running greenly. Watch the Replay.

Sky Hosoya (filly; Bluegrass Cat - T. K. O. Lady by Two Punch) set the early pace in the Spinaway Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga, but faded and finished 8th (last). The winner was R Heat Lightning (Trippi - Yellow Heat by Gold Fever). Watch the Replay. Read more about the Spinaway here.

The Princess is First

Warmwoolenmittens (Medallist - Wild Roan by Wild Rush) was scratched, as 6 ran on the fast track. Our Twin Stars (Sunday Break (JPN) - Right About Now by Pentelicus) was favored. Country First (Rockport Harbor - Honour Old Glory by Honour and Glory) was given a shot at 9-2. Arisen (Waquoit - Hero for Her by Partner's Hero) was off slowly at the break. Colonel's Princess (Oratory - Lois's Dancer by Distorted Humor) set the pace, pushed by Our Twin Stars. Country First was in fourth early. Colonel's Princess continued to lead, and took the win by 1 1/2 lengths over a hard trying Our Twin Stars. Country First was able to pick up some ground to finish 3rd. Four furlongs goes by very fast, and it's not surprising that the only experienced filly was the winner.

Running into the Sunset

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Runbellamyrun (Bellamy Road - Byebyebabybyebye by Glitterman) was the heavy favorite. I kind of liked the look of Persevere (Southern Image - Voz De Colegiala (CHI) by Sayaret), and Runbellamyrun looked ready. Mme Belle Brezing (Mr. Greeley - La Barberina by Nijinsky II) warmed up nicely. Set for Speed (Deputy Chief - Safe Speed by Six Speed) and Hidden Tee (Stacie's Ballado - Perfect Tee Time by Timeless Native) were off slowly. Sunset Belle (Flatter - Sunset Dancer by Cape Town) was gunned to the lead by Perry Ouzts. Persevere was her closest pursuer. Runbellamyrun was in fourth. She made a run on the outside, but Sunset Belle spurted away again to win by 4 1/4 lengths. Runbellamyrun, Scarlet Script (Consolidator - Alma Mater by Honor Grades), and Persevere finished together, with Runbellamyrun getting second on the outside. Runbellamyrun has now run four times, and finished 2nd three times.

Winning with Grace

So She Dances (Tiznow - She's Mahogany by Woodman) was scratched, leaving 6 to run. Indian Gracey (Indian Ocean - Miz Betty Grace by Matty G) was the heavy favorite, based on her 2nd-place finish to Tell a Kelly, winner of the Darley Debutante on Saturday. Victoria's Wildcat (Bellamy Road - Flaming Mirage by Woodman) was 11-1, but she made a good appearance in the post parade. Star Presence (Forest Wildcat - Orate by A. P. Indy) caught my eye in the warm-up. Big Tiz (Tiznow - Squall City by Carson City) and Indian Gracey went for the early lead, with Indian Gracey getting it. Victoria's Wildcat was at the back early. The pace was pretty swift, :22.13, :46.25. Did they realize that they were going a mile? Big Tiz gained a bit on Indian Gracey in the stretch, but making a more serious move was Star Presence. But, Indian Gracey held her off by a neck despite drifting out. Big Tiz held third, and Victoria's Wildcat passed a few to finish fourth. Watch the Replay.
