Paging Penelopy at Bristol Harbour

News and Notes

Nothing to do with maidens, but you have to love a 1 7/8 mile turf race that ends with a head bob finish. That's what happened in the 11th race at River Downs on September 6, a Starter Allowance contest for 3-year-olds and up. Scorpion Go North (Scorpion - Allie North by Northern Baby) ridden by River Downs legend Perry Ouzts outfinished For Men Only (Sligo Bay (IRE) - Love's Sensation by Lear Fan) with Hector Rosario, Jr. up. It was the 6th victory for 6-year-old Scorpion Go North in 49 starts, who has run over 2 miles several times.

Stay Thirsty (Bernardini - Marozia by Storm Bird) set the pace in the Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes (gr. I), despite stumbling at the start. But, he was no match late for Boys At Tosconova (Officer - Little Bonnet by Coronado's Quest). Stay Thirsty didn't give up, however, outfinishing Wine Police for second. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Hopeful here.

Hysterical Cat (Bluegrass Cat - Then She Laughs by Distorted Humor) pressed Bug Juice (Mingun - Twilight Empress by Twilight Agenda) early, but was no match for that one late, as he won the Aspirant Stakes at Finger Lakes by 7. Hysterical Cat lost 2nd late and finished third.

Cat Sweep (Bluegrass Cat - Nany's Sweep by End Sweep) rallied late to finish fourth in the Cradle Stakes at River Downs, just a neck out of third. The winner was Tanzana (Freefourinternet - Likely Suspect by Siphon (BRZ)), who just got up over pacesetter Conservative Value. Conservative Value was compromised by trying to get into the hedge.

Gangster Running

Furia d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro - Rich Find by Exploit) and Tell Tale Friend (Harlan's Holiday - Psych by Mazel Trick) were scratched. The track was fast. Gangsterontherun (City Zip - Bridge to Cross by Phone Trick), last seen at Saratoga, was favored. Pants On Fire (Jump Start - Cabo de Noche by Cape Town) also received some attention. Rock N Heart (Rockport Harbor - Prohibido Olividar by Mister Jolie) was 9-1, but he looked decent on the track. Gangsterontherun made a good appearance as well. Wayne the Train (Holy Bull - Twice Tempted by Wild Again) was catching my. He reared as the load began and unseated his jockey. But, the assistant starter grabbed him quick and all was good. Serendipper Moon (Malibu Moon - Sweet Serendipity by Salt Lake) was a tad reluctant to go into the gate. Gangsterontherun broke on top, with Serendipper Moon the closest pursuer. Rock N Heart was around mid-pack. Gangsterontherun continued on top, Wayne the Train made up some ground, but couldn't sustain his run. Pants On Fire made a late move to pick up second, but Gangsterontherun was long gone, crossing the wire 9 in front. Rock N Heart didn't have much impact, finishing 6th. Watch the Replay.

Destiny on the Turf

Charm Candy (Candy Ride (ARG) - Miss Playbill by Theatrical (IRE)) was scratched, leaving 11 to run on the firm turf. K C Lee (Lee's Badger - K. C. Classic by Sky Classic) was the slight favorite over Ms Anna Destiny (Anabaa - Limes 'n Lemons by Deputy Minister). Primp (Bernardini - Runway Model by Petionville) was 13-1. Lady Toccet (Toccet - Hidden Meaning by Gulch) was on her toes in the paddock. Ms Anna Destiny looked good on the track. Among the two debuting Suaves in the race, Romantic Intention (Suave - Lights Out (AUS) by Way of Light) and Suave Voir Faire (Suave - Avie's Song by Lord Avie), I prefered Suave Voir Faire on looks. The load and the start were pretty smooth. K C Lee and Ms Anna Destiny were dueling up front. The Suaves, Romantic Intention and Suave Voir Faire, were chasing. Primp secured a decent spot on the rail. Ms Anna Destiny put her head in front after 6 furlongs, and then pulled away. Sassy's Dream (Flower Alley - Model Performer by Theatrical (IRE)) came on the outside, securing second. Suave Voir Faire checked in third, and K C Lee tired to fourth. Primp tired a bit and finished 7th. Watch the Replay (there is no sound for the first part of the race).
