News and Notes

Adirondack (gr. II) winner Position Limit (filly; Bellamy Road - Payable On Demand by Out of Place) is on the sidelines with a right hind ankle issue. She will be out for 60-90 days, and is scheduled to return to the races in 2011.

It was great to see Al Khali, who was one of our 2008 Maiden Watch horses, win the Bowling Green (gr. IIT) at Belmont. He seemed hopelessly blocked until late, but displayed a nice turn of foot to get the victory. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Bowling Green here.

Stakes Result

My Bellamy (filly; Bellamy Road - Holiday Rates by Concorde's Tune) finished 4th in the City of Anderson Stakes on a muddy track at Hoosier Park. The good news is that if you bet her, you still cashed, as her entrymate, Perfectly Candid (Pleasantly Perfect - Candor by Crafty Prospector) was the winner. Watch the Replay.

Der Meister the Master

The track was fast. Lost Webos (Formal Dinner - Fountain of Truth by Proud and True) and AE entrant Crockefeller (Outflanker - Ritzy Affair by Sword Dance (IRE)) were scratched. AE entrant Midnight's Child (Real Quiet - Protect the Child by Housebuster) drew into the race. Hugh and Me (Henny Hughes - Princess V. by Memo (CHI)) was favored. But, Ucan'tcme (Bowman's Band - Golddigger Beware by Prenup) was also getting attention from the bettors. Steinbrenner (Bellamy Road - So Close by North Tower) was 8-1. Hugh and Me reared in the post parade. Der Meister (Out of Place - Bronze Glow by Devil's Bag) made a good appearance, and Steinbrenner had some spring in his step. The start was pretty fair, with Der Meister taking the lead. Ucan'tcme set out after him. Der Meister continued to set the pace, with Ucan'tcme chasing. Hugh and Me began to make up some ground. Ucan'tcme was gaining, but he couldn't catch Der Meister. Ucan'tcme was more than 9 lengths clear of third-place Hugh and Me. Steinbrenner galloped around at the back, defeating one to finish 9th. The Heisman Award

Acadian Blues (Bluegrass Cat - Dancing Gulch by Gulch) was scratched, leaving 8 to run on the fast track. The entry of Heisman (Distorted Humor - Weekend in Indy by A. P. Indy) and Gospel Lesson (Pulpit - Royal Bean by Royal Academy) was favored. But, Arthur's Tale (Bernardini - Owsley by Harlan) also took plenty of action. He acted up a bit in the paddock, but is quite the looker. Eltheeb (Bernardini - El Raabi by Fusaichi Pegasus) was 14-1. He looked like he was ready to take off in the post parade. Fusa Code (Fusaichi Pegasus - Lasting Code by Lost Code) gave a few kicks as they approached the gate. Eltheeb was not happy about loading, the rider hopped off and he went in. Charlies Swell (Malibu Moon - Little Indian Girl by Indian Charlie) was also a little stubborn. Arthur's Tale broke well, but Heisman took the early lead. Fusa Code was in pursuit, and Eltheeb wasn't far off. Heisman and Fusa Code continued 1-2, as Eltheeb began to retreat. He ended up 7th. Charlies Swell made a move on the outside and began to gain on Heisman. But, Heisman held him off by a whisker at the wire. Arthur's Tale was making up good ground late to finish third. Strangely enough, Arthur's Tale is the first Bernardini to finish third. Watch the Replay.

He is Good Better Best

Modimo (Kafwain - Shesoneinamill by Boone's Mill) was scratched, allowing Top Prospect (Stormy Atlantic - Strike Me Lucky by Smart Strike) to get into the race off of the AE list. The other AE entrant New Revolution (Mingun - Missy Dear by Deerhound) was out. The turf was firm. First-timer Enduring Star (Sir Shackleton - Lady Lyra by Storm Creek) was the early favorite, but Maritime Missile (Stormy Atlantic - High Arch by Arch), one of the experienced entrants, was the choice at post time. Rockport Missile (Rockport Harbor - Bienandanza by Bien Bien) was 23-1, and Cher Dini (Bernardini - Rare Opportunity by Danzig Connection) was 13-1. Celtic Conviction (Strut the Stage - All My Lovin' by Cat's Career) was making his first start since being gelded. Maritime Missile was on his toes, and Good Better Best (Best of the Bests (IRE) - Miss Crissy by Bold n' Flashy) made a favorable impression. Cher Dini looked ready. Top Prospect won the best looking in the post parade award, and Enduring Star got a nice warm-up. Rockport Missile was a little stubborn at the load. Maritime Missile broke best, but Top Prospect took the early lead. Town of Towns (Speightstown - Keepondealing by Friendly Lover) set after Top Prospect. Cher Dini was in a good position, around mid-pack, Rockport Missile was at the back. Top Prospect continued to lead into the stretch, but had plenty of pursuers. Good Better Best came on the outside. He was running greenly, but got up for a 1 3/4 length victory. Not much separated 2nd through 4th, which went to Top Prospect, Riopelle (Arch - Constant Touch by Belong to Me), and Maritime Missile. Cher Dini tired to 9th, and Rockport Missile never really got in gear, finishing 12th (last). Watch the Replay.

Steady Does It

Bumpy Road (Love of Money - Silver Tango by Silver Badge) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. Steady Warrior (Cherokee's Boy - Slow and Steady by Malibu Moon) was favored, and Sunday Punch (Rockport Harbor - Our Dear Ruth by Baldski) was 3-1. Itouch (Dixie Union - Listen A. P. by A. P. Indy) was catching my eye, while Please Endorse (Canadian Frontier - Enchant by War Chant) seemed a little on edge. Sunday Punch, debuting in blinkers, was keyed up in the post parade. Gaither Draw (Smarty Jones - Missadryannaatto by Green Dancer) broke on top, but Sunday Punch came up from his rail spot to take the lead. Gaither Draw was sticking close, however. Steady Warrior was just off this duel in third. They were setting some pretty good fractions up front, :21.85, :45.07, and Sunday Punch began to fade in the stretch. Steady Warrior made his move on the outside, and swept by Gaither Draw for the win. It was 7 lengths back to Please Endorse in third. Sunday Punch ended up 7th after his early activities. Steady Warrior is the second winner for freshman sire Cherokee's Boy. Watch the Replay.

Well I should have taken more notice of your "Steady Warrior" caption! I was there in paddock to cheer Sunday Punch on, he looked at me when I called out his name, but I must say many of these 2yr olds looked good there, especially the winner, big red. Maybe next time? In the 12th race Dutrow had a nice winner part of double entry

"Joyful Victory" by Tapit who I heard Mr.Porter was very high on, and he gave me and sealed my last leg of the pick4 for50cent portion.

Didn't see the race yet, had to leave, but saw he won when I returned home in PA. Thanks again for all your observations!  Don

Don - I think it was a good learning experience for Sunday Punch. He definitely has some ability. Those opening fractions were a little swift: :21.85, :45.07. Hmmm... I probably should have noted that above. I'll add it. Getting off the rail will help him.

Congratulations on your win.

Arthur's Tale ran ok - I only say ok because they ran the final furlong in 28 seconds, with a final time of 1:39.   That was over a second slower than the first race on the card. I do think Arthur's Tale is probably a pretty nice colt and the track was speed favoring yesterday, at least early.

Eltheeb disappointed, but maybe turf will get him going (I'd expect to see Arthur there soon enough as well given his pedigree).

I'm still very eager to see To Honor and Serve run again.

Betsy - Arthur's Tale seemed to run in spurts to me. He was gaining at the end, but as you point out, they were slowing down plenty up front. On the other hand, no one else was coming.

Eltheeb seems immature to me, the way he was acting in the prelims and at the load. I don't think he understands what he is supposed to do. There's time for him to come around.

It was hard to tell how Arthur ran the whole race because the only part I could really see was as they were nearing the finish line. I'd have to watch the race again, but he does seem to have ability. I know zip about conformation, but he's a bit gangly - probably hasn't grown into himself completely.

Eltheeb is a beautiful colt and he definitely was acting up. Bernardini has gotten off to an excellent start, but I need to remember that he didn't even start until he was 3. After his debut, Jerry Bailey said the light bulb hadn't gone off in his head. It wouldn't be a surprise if many of his kids are the same way.
