Bear's Future Looks Bright

Stakes Results

Bear's Future (colt; Rockport Harbor - Prairie Pie by Belong to Me) was odds on in the Swynford Stakes at Woodbine, and he looked the part in the post parade. He stalked the early pace and then moved even with Something Extra in the stretch. Something Extra hung in for awhile, but Bear's Future pulled away to win by an easy 3 1/2 lengths. Even though it was only a 5 horse field, you had to like the way Bear's Future did it. Bear's Future now has 2 wins in 2 starts, with earnings of $119,725. He is the first stakes winner for Rockport Harbor. Trainer Reade Baker said that the 1 1/16 mile Grey Stakes (Can-III) is next for Bear's Future, and if all goes well, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Watch the Replay.

Bellamy Jones (colt; Bellamy Road - Kind Lena by Seneca Jones) came running late in the Hillsdale Stakes at Hoosier Park, but he couldn't catch the filly What About Ruby (Silver Deputy - Emerald Rain by Johannesburg), who is now a perfect 2 for 2. Watch the Replay.

Displaying Wicked Speed

The track was sloppy. Ms Ribato (Act of Duty - Richmond Rebel by Personal Flag) and Amadorable (Peace Rules - Amaday by Dayjur) were scratched. AE entrant Wicked Speed (Macho Uno - Sararegal by Regal Classic) drew into the race. First-timer Potenza Bella (Holy Bull - Golden Honoree by Double Honor) took the early money, but Joyous Music (Bellamy Road - Pyrite Queen by Wavering Monarch) was favored at post time. She had shown speed in the past, and I was hoping that the slop would help her carry it. Wicked Speed looked nice on the track. Ginny G (Exchange Rate - Doc's Doll by Out of Place) needed some persuading to enter the gate. Wicked Speed was a little reluctant. The break was pretty even, except for The Marikutana (Congrats - Grazettes by Alydeed), who was off slowly and trailed. Joyous Music went to the front, with Many Crowns (Deputy Wild Cat - Vesuvio by Broad Brush) keeping her company. Broadway Marquee (Put It Back - Reflected Image by Farma Way) was just off these in third. Joyous Music shook free from Many Crowns, but Broadway Marquee was still a threat. Coming from off the pace were Ridge Kitten (Monsieur Cat - Nizy by Cox's Ridge) and Wicked Speed. Ridge Kitten took a brief lead, but she couldn't hold off Wicked Speed, who took the win. Picking up third late was The Marikutana, who made up lots of ground late after her poor start. Joyous Music ended up 7th. Although it was true that the rail was not the place to be at Calder today, it may be time to find a different strategy for Joyous Music. Watch the Replay.

Too Much Lucknfame for R Fast Cat

There were no scratches. The Bluegrass Cat entry of R Fast Cat (Bluegrass Cat - R Fast Lady by Artax) and Statehood (Bluegrass Cat - Heavenly Humor by Distorted Humor) was favored at even money. Eric's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Mrs. K. by Dixieland Band) made a good impression, and filly Proud Lil Sis (Proud Citizen - Delil by Dehere) caught my eye. Double Clutch (Consolidator - Sweet Bernadette by Jules) outbroke the field and set the pace. Tale of Lucknfame (Tale of the Cat - Luck and Fame by Western Fame) was his nearest pursuer. R Fast Cat got off to a good start, and was in third early. Statehood was near the back. Tale of Lucknfame put his head in front, as Double Clutch began to fade. R Fast Cat came through on the inside to join Tale of Lucknfame. But, Tale of Lucknfame was able to hold R Fast Cat off for the victory. It was more than 7 lengths back to the the rest of the field, heading by Proud Lil Sis and Eric's Kitten, who both were gaining late. Statehood didn't show much, finishing 8th. Watch the Replay.

A Powerful Upper East Sider

Nice Stuff (Greeley's Galaxy - Pierpont Account by Private Account) and MTO Lady Maureen (Desert Warrior - Movin Along by D'Accord) were scratched. The turf was firm. Eden Is Burning (Hook and Ladder - Perfect Design by Marquetry), the only filly with turf experience, attracted the attention of the majority of the bettors, and was 2-5 at post time. All Quiet (Henny Hughes - Quiet Rumour by Alleged) was almost 9-1, Miss Crabtree (Bluegrass Cat - Biogio's Beauty by Distorted Humor) was 28-1, and La La Pazusa (Rockport Harbor - Azusa by Flying Paster) was 11-1. All Quiet looked ready. The load was pretty smooth. Vintage Heirloom (Thunder Gulch - Bonnie Dares by Arch) and Oatka Idas Rose (Closing Argument - Oatka Idas Destiny by A. P Jet) both broke a little slowly. Lady Activator (Around the Cape - Camden Bay by Two Punch) and Eden Is Burning went for the lead. Lady Activator snagged it, and Eden Is Burning assumed a pressing position. Miss Marla (Bwana Charlie - Holy Freud by Freud) and Upper East Sider (Forest Wildcat - Upper Noosh by Red Ransom) weren't far off. Eden Is Burning put her head in front in the stretch, but Upper East Sider was looming. She kicked into gear and pulled away to win by 8. Oatka Idas Rose closed from nowhere to snatch second from Eden Is Burning. None of our three showed much, with La La Pazusa finishing 6th, All Quiet 7th, and Miss Crabtree 9th (last).
