Such a Sweet Win

They were off the turf, and on the sloppy main track. Country Flair (Country Be Gold - Sanadel by Stack), High On Kitten (Kitten's Joy - High Chant by War Chant), Saint Margaret (Saint Afleet - Kali Light by Colony Light), Vital Victory (Bwana Charlie - Victory Chime by Polish Numbers), and Raceabithea (Smart Strike - Entendu by Diesis (GB)) were scratched. AE entrant Such a Sweet Girl (Proud and True - Forest Dunes by Green Forest) drew into the race. Joyous Music (Bellamy Road - Pyrite Queen by Wavering Monarch) opened at less than even money, but Such a Sweet Girl was favored at post time. First-timer Harlem Renaissance (Proud and True - Sioux Chant by Reparations) caught my eye, and Such a Sweet Girl looked good on the track. Joyous Music took the early lead, despite stumbling. She was rank early, but soon settled down. Harlem Renaissance and Michelle's Trip (Trippi - Flit About by Fly So Free) were keeping her company. Bala Roja (Red Bullet - Lost Judgement by Judge Smells) was off slowly and was rank. Harlem Renaissance dropped back, but Joyous Music and Michelle's Trip continued up front. Michelle's Trip moved into the lead in the stretch, but Such a Sweet Girl was coming. She surged into the lead, and won by 3. Michelle's Trip was another 9 lengths in front of Joyous Music, who did hold third with a better finish than in her last race. Watch the Replay.

It's Artie's Party

The turf was firm, and Cat N Caboodle (Tale of the Cat - Hedge Ratio by Unbridled) was scratched. Buffgirl (Quiet American - Icelandic Dancer by Eskimo) was favored through much of the wagering, but the Artie Schiller entry of Artie's Party (Artie Schiller - May We by Carson City) and Schillerette (Artie Schiller - Missmaybe by Tale of the Cat) got the nod when they went in the gate. Littlegreatone (Bernardini - Megahertz (GB) by Pivotal (GB)) was almost 6-1. First-timer Arcina (Arch - Princess Consort by Dixieland Band) looked good on the track. Artie's Party was a tad agitated. Sassy Number (Include - Star Number by Polish Numbers) acted up a bit at the load, and went in without her jockey. Littlegreatone went in well, but came back out again. She hesitated at the start, and was at the back early. Buffgirl went to the front. Yourteepeeormine (Chief Seattle - Midnight Magic by Cahill Road) was in pursuit, but Buffgirl spurted away. She built up a several length lead. Artie's Party began to make up ground, and Sassy Number was moving as well. Artie's Party went to the lead, pulling away from Sassy Number. On the scene late was Settling for Gold (Seeking the Gold - Settling Mist by Pleasant Colony), but it was too little too late to catch Artie's Party. Littlegreatone never got into gear after her hesitation at the start, finishing 9th. Artie's Party is the 5th winner for Artie Schiller. Watch the Replay.

Winning the Hard Way

The turf was firm. The only scratches were the MTOs, leaving a full field of 12 to battle. Caribbean Lady (Speightstown - Graceful Leigh by Clever Trick) was favored. Hen Reception (Henny Hughes - Court Reception by A. P. Indy) was a cool 27-1. I didn't get a good look at her, but she looked decent from what I saw. I liked the look of First Position (Polish Payola - Heel and Toe by Pas Seul) in the paddock. Campaign Vows (Broken Vow - Who's Cozy by Cozzene) was a little wild. Miss Hard Ten (Rock Hard Ten - Jazz Meeting by General Meeting) was interesting. Embarr (Royal Academy - In too Deep by The Deep (IRE)) was reluctant to load, and started slowly. Up front, it was favorite Caribbean Lady showing the way with Gracymygracy (Lion Hearted - Grinamic by Grindstone) pressing. Hen Reception was off to a decent start, sitting about mid-pack. Caribbean Lady left Gracymygracy behind, but Miss Hard Ten was getting involved. Those two pulled away from the pack and battled for the duration. They were both green in the stretch, with Caribbean Lady coming out often. Caribbean crossed the wire 1 1/4 lengths in front of Miss Hard Ten, who was another 2 3/4 lengths clear of the next bunch. A neck, 2 heads, and a nose seperated Parade of Colors (Leading the Parade - Arcanum by Unbridled), First Position, Hen Reception, Peek of Heaven (Sky Mesa - Proud Angel by Fusaichi Pegasus), and Campaign Vows. There was a stewards' inquiry, and an objection lodged by the jockey of Miss Hard Ten against the jockey of Caribbean Lady. The order of finish was reversed, and Miss Hard Ten was awarded the win. I had the exacta either way, but it paid better with Miss Hard Ten on top. Watch the Replay.

I believe Alluring Squall finished 3rd in a photo...........sounds like another promising Bernardini. These close finishes are getting frustrating, though!

Hi everyone,

A great blog as ever and very interesting.

Great news that Alluring Squall ran so well.

Am getting very excited about Theysken's Theory!  Go girl go! Not too much longer to wait now!

I wonder if Jaridh will be a Kentucky Derby contender next year?  Now wouldn't that be great!!!!

Another Godolphin Bernardini 2 y o to look out for is Biondetti.  He has won a race already.

Today at Ascot I hope that Poet's Voice wins the QUEII from Makfi.  Both are sons of the great Dubawi by the great Dubai Millenium!  Poet's Voice races for Godolphin and Frankie Dettori rides.  Makfi is trained by Mikael Delzangles and Christophe Soumillon rides.  i was hoping it would be Julien Leparoux's friend Christophe Lemaire who won the 2000 Guineas on Makfi.

Frankel runs in the Royal Lodge and should win for Henry Cecil and Tom Queally.  He is a lovely colt too.  But I prefer Godolphin's Saamid by Street Cry, the two aforementioned Bernardini's and the Andre Fabre trained Godolphin colt French Navy by Shamardal!  The latter is uncannily like Shamardal in looks!

Well have waffled enough!

Have a great day and God Bless you all!

Best wishes

I really am getting antsy about To Honor and Serve; he hasn't worked since his race on 9/4...........I hope he isn't hurt. Too bad Mott doesn't have a website......

Thanks for posting the video!

Abbie, I'm going to get up early to watch the race. It's too bad Dwyer is hurt as he's familiar with Theysken's Theory, but Moore seems to be a good choice. It won't be easy, but I would kill for TT to win this race

I haven't heard much about Jaridh at all - too bad, because I thought he ran very well in his debut.  Biondetti is definitely talented - I think he's nominated to an Irish grade 2.

Hi Betsy and the Maiden Watch team,

Don't worry about Jaridh.  He is in very good hands.  Godolphin don't usually overdo things with their 2 y o's.  After all they know that horses are not mature until they are 4!

I think when Godolphin retire horses at 3 it is so nothing bad happens to them.  It was important Dubawi carried on the Dubai Millneium line - which he is indeed doing and so magnificently.  Watch out for Echo of Light's (very like Dubai Millenium to look at)2 y o's in 2011!

I think that maybe Bernardini was retired because they did not want him to get injured.  With his pedigree, looks and racing ability he always looked likely to make a great stallion!

Some horses are tougher than others. In a lot of cases the Godolphin/Darley horses have been kept in training at 4, 5 and even older!

Have a great day.

God Bless

Best wishes

Thanks for the info about To Honor and Serve! I love, love love that horse..........I still think he's better than Astrology, who is entered in the Garden State Stakes at Monmouth tomorrow. Good luck to him!

Abbie, I believe Jaridh is in very good hands to be sure. That said, if they are afraid of a horse getting hurt, they shouldn't be in this business. I won't forgive them for retiring Bernadini, but I will continue to root for their horses.

Have a great day!

Hi Betsy

We will have to agree to differ over Bernardini.

If Bernardini had been killed I would have been absolutely heartbroken and horses do die on the track or due to injuries caused on it. (Barbaro for instance). I am glad Godolphin kept Bernardini safe so he could be a successful stallion.  Mostly they do keep their horses in training.

Watch out for Girolamo!  He is very like his sire A P Indy in looks and potentially a superstar!

God Bless

Best wishes
