Alexandria Finds a Way

News and Notes

Like much of Lexington, I am volunteering at the World Equestrian Games. During that time, there may be a delay in updating this blog, and coverage will probably be reduced. Also, I will not be tweeting races on Sundays, Mondays, or Tuesdays for the next three weeks.

Stakes Result

Theyskens' Theory (filly; Bernardini - Heat Lightning by Summer Squall) tracked the pacesetter in the Group I Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Ascot, and then took the lead. But, she didn't have enough to hold off White Moonstone (Dynaformer - Desert Gold by Seeking the Gold) and Together (IRE) (Galileo (IRE) - Shadow Song (IRE) by Pennekamp), finishing third. Date With Destiny (IRE) (George Washington (IRE) - Flawlessly (FR) by Rainbow Quest) was scratched. Godolphin's White Moonstone is now 4 for 4. In addition to the Fillies' Mile, she has wins in the group II May Hill Stakes at Doncaster, and the group III Sweet Solera Stakes at Newbury.Read more about the Fillies' Mile here.

Alexandria Finds a Way

Street Storm (Stormy Atlantic - Oblivious by Cozzene) was favored early, but first-timer Eden Star (Eddington - Exploding Star by Exploit) was the choice at post time. Alexandria Wa (Bluegrass Cat - Two Halos by Saint Ballado) was 6-1. Parse (Dehere - Pantufla by Rubiano) was kicking up her heels in the post parade, and Alexandria Wa made a good impression. As post time approached, I lost the Turfway feed. In my experience, that is usually a good sign. Galloping Domino (Victory Gallop - Emirate by Marquetry) went for the early lead, but she had company. Briksdal (Van Nistelrooy - Gypsy Sweetheart by D'Accord), Street Storm, and I'm a Flake (Mineshaft - November Snow by Storm Cat) were all up there. Alexandria Wa was in a good spot, not too far off of these. Galloping Domino continued to lead, with Street Storm pressing. But, both Alexandria Wa and Eden Star were coming. Alexandria Wa got the better trip, emerging from between horses to take the lead. Eden Star was moving on the outside. Because there was a wide separation between the two competitors, it was a little difficult to see who was in front, but the photo confirmed that it was Alexandria Wa by a neck. Alexandria Wa is winner number 14 for Bluegrass Cat. Watch the Replay.

Unveiling a Star

Simba's Voodoo (Lion Tamer - Miniature Magic by Miswaki) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. First-timer Sir Star (Five Star Day - Majak Girl by Sir Richard Lewis) was favored. Also getting respect was Codes Diamond (Super Code - Imatexantoo by Ray's Pegasus). Little Sheik (Rockport Harbor - Silk Sails by Ocean Crest) was almost 10-1. He made a good impression on the track. Steely Ran (Leestown - Oriental Doll by Porto Foricos) looked good as well. Sharir (Storm Day - Jenny O by Gold Case) was reluctant to load, and then was restless in the gate. Sir Star outbroke the field, but he was soon overtaken by Mc's Perfectpoison (Storm Day - Cinnamon Twist by Forty Won) and Steely Ran. Little Sheik wasn't far off either. Steely Ran took the lead with Little Sheik in pursuit. But, they were both overwhelmed by Sir Star. He went to the front and kept on rolling. The winning margin was 9 1/4 lengths. Little Sheik outfinished Steely Ran for second. Impressive debut for Sir Star, and a decent first-out for Little Sheik. Watch the Replay.

The Right Feng Shui

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. The Todd Pletcher-trained Jaeger (Indian Charlie - The Church Lady by Valid Wager) took most of the money, but Ivy Connection (Forestry - Capote's Crown by Capote) garnered some attention as well. Ruby Road (Bellamy Road - Ruby Delight by Pulpit) was 3rd-choice, at almost 9-1. He looked ready in the paddock. Giovanni Angelo (The Cliff's Edge - Quick Start by Hennessy) was kicking up his heels. Ruby Road was a little stubborn at the load. There was a scramble for the early lead. Good Feng Shui (Pomeroy - Kissin' Jeb by Jeblar) claimed it. Raise a Reader (Two Punch - Here Comes Nikki by The Prime Minister), Jaeger, and Ready for More (More Than Ready - Zarrin by Maria's Mon) set after him. Good Feng Shui continued on top however, and then began to draw away. At the finish, he was more than 5 in front. There was a battle for remaining places. Proper Villain (Bandini - Saintly Music by Saint Ballado) came on late to grab second, and Jaeger and Ready for More deadheated for third. Ruby Road wasn't much involved, finishing 7th. Good Feng Shui is winner number 14 for Pomeroy. By the way, my tweeting about Good Feng Shui gained me several retweets from @fengshuiquotes. Watch the Replay.

A Quality Win

The track was fast. Break Up the Game (Bernardini - Pennant Champion by Mr. Prospector) was scratched. City Cool (City Zip - Stylish Manner by Touch Gold), one of two experienced horses in the field, was favored. Uncle Carm (Bluegrass Cat - Lady Cruella by Capote) was 13-1. He looked good strolling through the paddock. Backdown (Gulch - North Park Legend by Affirmed) was a little on edge in the post parade. Leave of Absence (Harlan's Holiday - Danseur Chaud by Joyeux Danseur) looked good. Caneros (Distorted Humor - Kalookan Queen by Lost Code) needed some encouragement to enter the gate. Much of the field was off slowly. Uncle Carm broke outwardly at the start. City Cool set the pace, with Quality Council not far off. Quality Council moved up to challenge City Cool. They dueled for a time, but then Quality Council pulled away for a 3 1/2 length victory. Leave of Absence and Black N Beauty (Devil His Due - Harbor Girl by Boston Harbor) fought for second, Leave of Absence won that one. Uncle Carm was in mid-pack for much of the race, got a little tired late and finished 6th. This was an easy $113.50 exacta, just box the two with experience. And, no, I didn't have it.
