Rebuffed

News and Notes

Although I haven't been listing works, I did want to note that Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies turf contender Kathmanblu worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.80 on the Keeneland turf on October 30, in company with Turf Sprint contender Bridgetown. I actually was out at Keeneland, but I missed her work. I did see Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Rogue Romance, who worked 5 furlongs in :59 2/5 on the main track at Keeneland.

I have to go out of town for a funeral, so there will be no actual previews today. Instead, I will list the entries for Sunday, October 31. I will not be tweeting the races on Sunday, and I'm not sure when the blog will next be updated. Lots of 2-year-old racing, especially at Belmont and Churchill Downs.

Rebuffed

Heat Shield (Distorted Humor - True Flare by Capote) was scatched, leaving 9 to go on a fast track. Joe Vann (Silver Deputy - Polish Flower by Danzig) was favored, even though he failed as the favorite in his most recent start. Buffum (Bernardini - Storm Beauty by Storm Cat) was 8-1, Uncle Carm (Bluegrass Cat - Lady Cruella by Capote) was 10-1, and Acadian Blues (Bluegrass Cat - Dancing Gulch by Gulch) was 70-1. Raison d'Etat (A. P. Indy - Sightseek by Distant View) is a looker. He was acting up a bit. I kept coming back to Cool Blue Red Hot (Harlan's Holiday - Paris Rose by Accelerator), but Buffum looked warming up. Empiricist (Empire Maker - La Gueriere by Lord At War (ARG)) was a little reluctant to load. Rock Hard Nicky (Rock Hard Ten - Ioya Forever by Louis Quatorze) went to the lead. Joe Vann and Raison d'Etat were up close. Buffum had a nice spot just off of the pace. The pace was pretty swift, :22.40, :45.54. Buffum came running and swept to the lead. He was soon open lengths in front. However, the race was not over, as Cool Blue Red Hot was making a powerful run. Buffum was able to hold him off, winning by a nose. Buffum did come out a bit, but there was no inquiry or claim of foul and the results were official. It was more than 7 lengths back to the third-place finisher, who was 70-1 Acadian Blues. Uncle Cam wasn't much involved, finishing 7th. Favorite Joe Vann tired to 9th (last). Buffum is winner number 9 for Bernardini. Watch the Replay.

A Delta Flood

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Grace Alley (Flower Alley - Heart of Grace by Exploit), second in her most recent 2 starts was favored. Runninglikeanangel (Rockport Harbor - Rosthern by Broad Brush) was 9-1, Gharbiah (Bernardini - Cuando Quiere by Affirmed) was 18-1, and Flowerming (Bellamy Road - Red Sonnet by Red Ransom) was 35-1, although I thought that she looked the best of our three. Royal Delta (Empire Maker - Delta Princess by A. P. Indy) looked good leaving the paddock. Bernardette (A. P. Indy - Cara Rafaela by Quiet American) made a favorable impression on the track. Grace Alley outbroke everyone, but she couldn't clear from her outside post, and J C's Queen (Hold That Tiger - Skip Queen by Skip Away) set the pace. Runninglikeanangel was in a good spot on the rail. Bernardette began to make a move. Grace Alley inherited the lead, but challengers were coming. Moving best was Royal Delta. She went to the front, and then really took off. She won by 12 without much effort. Status Pending (Tale of the Cat - Party Chatter by Pleasant Colony) was the best of the rest, and Bernardette took third. Our fillies finished in 6th (Runninglikeanangel), 7th (Flowerming), and 8th (Gharbiah). Watch the Replay.

Going to San Antone

Fire Angel (The Daddy - Top Secret by Afleet) and Badleroibrown (Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) - Ginger Sea (SAF) by Western Winter) were scratched. Ivy Connection (Forestry - Capote's Crown by Capote), the only entrant with experience, was favored. Byrd William (Bellamy Road - Gracious Granny by Lost Code) was 41-1. Extensive (Purge - Zambia by Theatrical (IRE)) caught my eye, lots of white on that one. Strong Appeal (Strong Contender - Appealing Jewel by Saint Ballado) was a little squirrelly. Elusive Action (Elusive Quality - Resplendency by Tale of the Cat) delayed the start. San Antone (Offlee Wild - Run by Lite the Fuse) took the early lead, despite the outside post, but favorite Ivy Connection went with him. Byrd William was at the back. San Antone and Ivy Connection continued to exchange punches on the lead. Ivy Connection gained the advantage at one point, but San Antone fought back. He was almost 2 lengths ahead at the finish. Extensive made a good run to take third. Byrd William seemed to be making a move, but was forced wide and finished 7th. Watch the Replay.
