Dialing It In

The only scratches were the AEs, and the track was fast. Favoritism wavered between The Freak (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Deliteful Sunrise by Afternoon Deelites) and first-timer Dialed In (Mineshaft - Miss Doolittle by Storm Cat), with the latter horse getting the nod at post time. Percussion (Bluegrass Cat - Cradlesong by Pine Bluff) was a cool 43-1. Dialed In looked the part of the favorite, and Philippe (Mineshaft - Freedom of Speech by Danzig) made a decent impression. Both Santo Gato (Kitten's Joy - Santo Mio by Southern Halo) and Percussion were given strong warm-ups. Dialed In missed the break, and Philippe and Percussion went for the lead. Back in the pack, Dialed In was having trouble negotiating the turn. Percussion moved away from Philippe, but Ninja Blade (Johannesburg - Mekko Hokte by Holy Bull) was getting involved. He swept by Percussion. Late on the scene was favorite Dialed In. He was coming like a freight train, lugging in, looking green, but getting to the lead. He took it by 1/2 length over Ninja Blade. Percussion was clear in third. This was quite a wow performance for Dialed In, one that will land him on many early Derby lists. He doesn't seem to quite understand the game yet, but certainly has loads of talent. However, I was pleased with Percussion's performance, a definite improvement over his debut. Next time, he hopefully will be able to go the distance. Watch the Replay.

A Real Beauty

The track was fast. Lidos Abit Sassy (Lido Palace (CHI) - Sassy Frassy by Local Talent), Noble Doss (Mr. Greeley - Mimi's Golden Girl by Seeking the Gold), Perjury (Fusaichi Pegasus - North Cork by Doneraile Court), and Dominus (Smart Strike - Cuando by Lord At War (ARG)) were scratched, as well as AEs Archarcharch (Arch - Woodman's Dancer by Woodman), Saigon Story (Quiet American - Penny Marie by Sky Classic), and Unsaddled Glory (Belong to Me - Champagne N Glory by Miswaki). The bettors only had eyes for Black N Beauty (Devil His Due - Harbor Girl by Boston Harbor), who did make a good impression. It was easy to see how he got his name. Little Sheik (Rockport Harbor - Silk Sails by Ocean Crest) was 11-1. Ghost Is Clear (Ghostzapper - Tamweel by Gulch) had some spring in his step as they headed to the track, and Grandestroyale (Chapel Royal - Grandestofall by Grand Slam) looked interesting. Jack's Soul (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Recoleta by Wild Again) and Faisal Prince (Officer - Dr. Kathy by Polish Numbers) were off slowly. Grandestroyale and Little Sheik went for the lead. Black N Beauty assumed a stalking position. Little Sheik began to drop back, as Black N Beauty moved to the front. Ghost Is Clear menaced for a time, but Black N Beauty pulled away for a 2 3/4 length victory. Ghost Is Clear was more than 7 in front of slow starting Faisal Prince, who did some running late. Little Sheik weakened to 6th. Watch the Replay.
