Lauburu Breaks Up the Game

Rocking Out (Include - Elusive Sugar by Elusive Quality) was scratched, and the track was fast. Lauburu (Unbridled's Song - Goulash by Mari's Book), the half brother to champion Ashado, was favored, with Kanagaro (Indian Charlie - Saratoga Cat by Sir Cat) also getting a lot of attention at the windows. Break Up the Game (Bernardini - Pennant Champion by Mr. Prospector) was virtually ignored at 22-1. Lauburu looked good in the paddock. I remember that his sister Ashado was always one of the best looking horses in the prelims. Break Up the Game looked a little skittish at first, but settled down to look at home on the track. Debuting Five Sigma Event (Five Star Day - Grand Betty by Copelan) got a nice warm-up. Trouble for Tiger (Hold That Tiger - Dutchess Alexandra by Judge Smells) needed a shove in the gate. Five Sigma Event went to the lead, but he was running greenly up front. Lauburu and Trouble for Tiger were the closest pursuers, but it was a tight pack. Break Up the Game had a good spot in fourth. Lauburu moved even with Five Sigma Event, and then put his head in front. But, both Kanagaroo and Break Up the Game were coming. Break Up the Game caught Lauburu on the outside and they finished together. The photo revealed that Lauburu's nose hit the wire first. Lauburu grabbed the headlines, but it was a very nice debut for Break Up the Game. I guess time will tell which one progresses from here. Watch the Replay.

Gus Wins the War

The turf was good, and only the AEs were scratched. War for Gus (War Front - Play Date by Geiger Counter) was even money, Joyous Music (Bellamy Road - Pyrite Queen by Wavering Monarch) got some play at 5-1. She looked good. Dr. D R (Borrego - Celtic Raven by Miesque's Son) was a little skittish, Journey to Nowhere (Western Pride - Imaginary Journey by Concorde's Tune) made a good impression, but he was a little reluctant to load. Dahy (Stormy Atlantic - Teakabu by Woodman) acted up as well. He was a bad influence on War for Gus, who decided to be stubborn as well. I was a bit concerned about Joyous Music. Since she was in the 2 hole, she had to wait for a long time during this. However, it looked like those already in the gate were staying calm. At the break, Joyous Music shot to the lead as usual. She was soon three lengths in front. She seemed to be moving pretty easily, but the fractions were pretty strong, :22.04, :44.83, and the boys began to catch her. Favorite War for Gus and Chagu Mio moved as a team, with War for Gus finishing stronger for the win. Valter (Boastful - Snooks Five by Wheaton) came on late to take third. Joyous Music finished fourth. She just needs to slow down a tad in the early going to secure a win. War for Gus is winner number 14 for War Front. Watch the Replay.

Congie is King

The turf was firm. Imagining (Giant's Causeway - Daydreaming by A. P. Indy) was scratched, allowing AE Derby Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Blush by Menifee) to run. The other AEs and the MTO stayed on the sidelines. Casino Host (Dynaformer - Ensenada by Seeking the Gold) and Cockeyed Rooster (Elusive Quality - Saintly Speech by Southern Halo) were the favorites, but they were only tepid choices. Eltheeb (Bernardini - El Raabi by Fusaichi Pegasus) was almost 40-1. Derby Kitten looked good going to the track. Cockeyed Rooster went to the front. He built up a clear lead, but was a little rank up there. Northern Hammer (Medaglia d'Oro - Romantic Romance by Rahy) took up the chase in second. King Congie (Badge of Silver - Wise Ending by End Sweep) and Stormy the Cat (Storm Cat - Unrestrained by Unbridled) were not far off. Eltheeb was at the back. Cockeyed Rooster continued to lead into the stretch, but company was coming. Stormy the Cat menaced for a moment on the rail, but Casino Host and King Congie were making more sustained bids. It was 43-1 King Congie who was moving best, a winner by 1 1/4 lengths over Casino Host. Cockeyed Rooster, Laconic (Artie Schiller - Race With Grace by Rahy), Derby Kitten, and Sandys Diamond (Roman Ruler - Ideal Image by Hennessy) finished together in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th positions. Eltheeb saved ground throughout, but never did much running, finishing 12th (last). King Congie is the 13th winner for Badge of Silver. Watch the Replay.

A Gold Expo

Electric Boots (Bellamy Road - Lalka by Dynaformer) and Aamra (Red Kohinor - Heat Onthe Rise by Dixieland Heat) were out, and Crimson Kate (First Samurai - Red Lifesaver by Victory Gallop) was a late scratch. Splendor Town (Speightstown - Touch of Splendor by Charismatic), one of two with experience, was favored. Irish Legacy (Bellamy Road - Atherbest by Silver Hawk) was 50-1. Giant Sensation (Giant's Causeway - Sensation by Dixie Union) is a pretty girl, like many of the Giant's Causeways. Expo Gold (Johannesburg - Clouds of Gold by Strike the Gold) looked good out there, and Mollys Missb'havin (Silver Train - Sunup by Smart Strike) looked ready to run. Irish Legacy looked like she might need one. Giant Sensation got a blanket for the load. She didn't looked pleased with the activity, but went in. Mollys Missb'havin dumped her rider and was briefly loose, but was corralled quickly. Announcer Mark Johnson commented that she was well named. Finally, they were off. Giant Sensation was off slowly. Irish Legacy broke in the air, and then got wiped out by her neighbors. Her race was pretty much over at that point. Better Music (Blazonry - Musical Fight by Fit to Flight) sprinted to the lead, but she was soon joined and passed by Expo Gold. Splendor Town and Mollys Missb'havin took after Expo Gold, but they couldn't gain. Expo Gold was more than 2 in front at the wire, with Splendor Town another 2 ahead of Mollys Missb'haven. It was a long way (14 lengths) back to the rest of them, which were led by Perfectlybeautiful (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Silence Beauty (JPN) by Sunday Silence). Irish Legacy finished 9th (last). Ironically the NTRA calendar features for November "Buddy's Saint". A great loss of a great racehorse. The calendar is a fitting tribute to how hard he ran. Condolences to owner and trainer. I hope everyone has the calendar. Each time a horse is euthanized from a race I think how they enjoyed the fields running as a young foal and it takes away the sting. I admire the owners also that retire their horses when they are afraid they may do further injury like Afleet Alex's owners.
