Seeking Moonshine Magic

News and Notes

Condolences to the connections of Buddy's Saint, who broke down in a workout on November 14. Buddy's Saint's first start certainly was memorable, as he finished first in a 6.5 furlong Maiden Special Weight at Belmont Park on September 26, 2009, but was disqualified and placed second (Watch the Replay). Many did not agree with the disqualification, and Buddy's Saint flaunted his talent by winning the Nashua Stakes (gr. II) (Watch the Replay) and the Remsen Stakes (gr. II) (Watch the Replay) in his next two starts. Buddy's Saint had a bone chip removed in spring of this year, and had returned to training in July. I know that I wasn't the only one eagerly awaiting his return.

Dancing to the Winner's Circle

The track was fast. Moonshine Magic (Bluegrass Cat - Rhum by Go for Gin) was scratched. She'll run instead on November 16 at Philadelphia Park (see below). Also scratched was Pots and Pans (Two Punch - Scullery Maid by Broad Brush). Dance Quietly (A. P. Indy - Quiet Dance by Quiet American) was the heavy favorite, and Nicky's Way (First Samurai - Bunting by Private Account) received a little attention at the windows. Lady Bluegrass (Bluegrass Cat - Unbridled Lady by Unbridled) was 16-1. Dance Quietly stumbled a bit at the start, but soon went up to battle for the lead with Green's Hard Ten (Rock Hard Ten - Greenberg by Royal Academy). Nicky's Way was just behind the dueling pair in third. Lady Bluegrass was saving ground, and had one beat. Green's Hard Ten began to weaken, as Nicky's Way went up to join Dance Quietly. Those two fought to the wire, with Dance Quietly getting the win by a neck. Lady Bluegrass finished 5th. Watch the Replay.

Striking the Front

For a seven horse race, this one had plenty of pre-race action. The bettors eyes were mostly on Strike the Moon (Malibu Moon - Star Kell by Star de Naskra), who was 1-9 early on. She drifted up a bit, but still was the heavy choice at post time. Third Row Center (Rockport Harbor - Retained by Star of the Crop) was respected at 7-2. Truly Devoted (Fusaichi Pegasus - Act Devoted by A. P. Indy) was acting up in the paddock, and the horses were late leaving that area. It was about 3 minutes to post when they finally made it to the track. Kitness (Storm Cat - Firmness by Devil's Bag) was showing some spirit. Maybe a little too much spirit, she dumped her rider and took off. She was caught rather quickly, but required an equipment adjustment after her antics. She loaded ok, but acted up when Truly Devoted balked. On the other hand, Third Row Center walked right in. I thought she might benefit from loading last. Strike the Moon broke on top and was soon lengths in front. Truly Devoted made a run at Strike the Moon, but Strike the Moon scampered away again. Really moving well late was Kitness, who still had plenty of energy after her pre-race antics. She was no threat to winner Strike the Moon, but was ridden out past the wire, and is one to watch for next time. Third Row Center broke out, was in a decent position early, but was eased late in the race. The original post time for this race was 12:56, they broke at 1:03. That's 2-year-old fillies for you. Getting the Last Word

The turf was firm.Psalm Twenty Three (Giant's Causeway - Meadow Flyer by Meadowlake) was scratched, allowing AE Celestial Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Heavenly Glory by Honour and Glory) to run. The other AEs and the MTO were scratched. The public had trouble deciding on a favorite. Hungry Island (More Than Ready - Flying Passage by A. P. Indy) was the tepid 7-2 choice at post time, but Celestial Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Heavenly Glory by Honour and Glory) and Parting Words (Artie Schiller - Lost Love by Lost Code) were just a couple of ticks higher. On the other hand, Flowerming (Bellamy Road - Red Sonnet by Red Ransom) was 51-1. Celestial Kitten looked good in the paddock. I liked Vex (Eurosilver - Silver Wand by Silver Hawk) and Inflation Hedge (Badge of Silver - Royal Veagess by Rock Royalty) on the track, but overall it was a nice looking bunch. This field of 12 mostly experienced fillies loaded much quicker than the earlier 2-year-old filly race at Aqueduct. It was a decent break, except Parting Words smacked her neighbor pretty hard and was near the back. Up front, Mountain Rose (Distorted Humor - Secret Thyme by Storm Cat) and Saucy Jade (Rock Hard Ten - Nureyev's Encore by Nureyev) led the charge. Celestial Kitten and Vex were not far off this duel. Celestial Kitten made a move on the outside, but Parting Words was coming too. Parting Words outfinished Celestial Kitten to get the victory by a length. Hungry Island was on the scene late to take third. Flowerming didn't do much running, passing a couple of tired ones to finish 8th. Interestingly, the two early pacesetters, Mountain Rose and Saucy Jade finished in a deadheat for fifth. Vex might be one to watch next time. She had loads of trouble in the race. Watch the Replay.
