The Winner's Bracket

The track was good earlier in the day, but had been upgraded to fast by post time of the 10th. There were no scratches, which meant a full field of 12. Bracket Buster (Henny Hughes - Code of Love by Cryptoclearance) was favored at post time, but the other Maiden Watch horses were respected as well, with R Fast Cat (Bluegrass Cat - R Fast Lady by Artax) at just under 3-1, and Look West (Bluegrass Cat - Twirlaway by Unbridled) at almost 4-1. He was showing some spirit as he was saddled, and was a little jumpy on the track. Perfectly Crazy (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Crazy Ensign (ARG) by Firery Ensign) got a strong warm-up. Amongst our three, I thought Bracket Buster looked best on the track. First-timer Strong Appeal (Strong Contender - Appealing Jewel by Saint Ballado) caught my eye as well, although he was ignored at the windows at almost 53-1. He broke on top, with Derivative (Mr. Greeley - Erica's Smile by Williamstown) keeping him company. Also up close early was Run Augustus Run (Broken Vow - Kiva Step by Premiership). Debuting Tactical Man (Tactical Cat - You Belong by Belong to Me) was napping when the gates opened and trailed. Up front, Derivative and Strong Appeal traded places, and Bracket Buster started to come to life. He came running on the outside and swept by the frontrunners, winning by 2 3/4 lengths. Strong Appeal outfinished Derivative for second. Beamer (Vindication - Untarnished by Unbridled) made up a lot of ground for fourth. R Fast Cat was in a decent position early on in the race, but tired a bit and finished 6th. Look West was also close up early, but weakened to 8th. A nice, professional score for Bracket Buster, who is winner number 13 for Henny Hughes. Watch the Replay.

Great Exuma (colt; Bernardini - Elusive Diva by Elusive Quality) stalked the pacesetter and then took control on the turn to break his maiden by 2 1/4 lengths in the first at Churchill Downs, a 1 1/16 mile Maiden Claiming race (Claiming Price $15,000). To no great surprise, Great Exuma was claimed out of the race. Hmmm... I sense a Starter Allowance in his future. Great Exuma is the 10th winner for Bernardini. Watch the Replay.

La La Pazusa (Rockport Harbor - Azusa by Flying Paster) was scratched from race 5 at Aqueduct, a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming race (Claiming Price $25,000).

Zayda (Bluegrass Cat - Winter Solstice by Unbridled) makes his second start, after finishing 4th at a mile on the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate on October 28. He was off slowly in that one, spotting the field several lengths. This time, he'll try a mile on the turf. Winter Solstice is a half sister to 3 winners, including turf stakes winner Reform Act, and grade I stakes-placed Soul Search. The only entrant with turf experience is Mr. Candy Bar (Candy Ride (ARG) - Miss Puzzle (AUS) by Citidancer (IRE), who was 7th in a mile turf race at Hollywood Park on October 11. Previously, he was 5th in a 5 furlong race on the Golden Gate Tapeta on September 12. He is out of Miss Puzzle, who was a winner on the turf, and also stakes-placed on that surface. He was 3rd in a 6 furlong race at Santa Rosa on August 1, 2nd in a 6 furlong race at Golden Gate on August 29, and 4th in a 6.5 furlong race at Hollywood Park on October 16. McCovey Cove is out of stakes winner Serela, who was a winner at 2. Serela has produced 3 winners, one of which won on the turf. By the way, McCovey Cove and Cut Fastball would make a nice baseball exacta.
