News and Notes

Ok, it was a $12,500 Maiden Claiming race for Fillies and Mares, 3-year-olds and up, and none of these horses is going to set the world on fire. But, the 9th race at Aqueduct on November 19 was remarkable for the ride turned in by Junior Alvarado on My Honey Laurie. She stumbled at the start, and he ended up with both legs on one side. He was able to hang on, hoist himself back in the saddle and... Watch the Replay.

A Sweet Win

There were no scratches in the six horse race, and the turf was firm. Mr. Candy Bar (Candy Ride (ARG) - Miss Puzzle (AUS) by Citidancer (IRE) was favored, Zayda (Bluegrass Cat - Winter Solstice by Unbridled) was 6-1. Twice the Appeal (Successful Appeal - Double Boarded by Cormorant) made a good impression, while Picasso Blue (Cee's Tizzy - West Coast Monarch by Wavering Monarch) seemed a little on edge. The break was fair, but no one seemed to want the lead. McCovey Cove (Grand Slam - Serela by Holy Bull) grabbed it, but blew the first time and pushed Twice the Appeal out as well. This left Zayda to take command. His clear lead was short-lived, however, as the Twice the Appeal and McCovey Cove closed the gap. Also moving on the outside was Mr. Candy Bar. He swept to the front and got the victory over McCovey Code and Twice the Appeal. It was fourth once again for Zayda. I was a little surprised that the jockey of Twice the Appeal didn't claim foul against the jockey of McCovey Cove for the action on the first turn, but there was no foul and the results stood. A Dream Comes True

The track was fast. Ordinary Time (Time Bandit - Quest Mount by Conveyor), Ridge Road (Fistfite - New Direction by Time for a Change), and Lusterdust (Unbridled Energy - Lovely Deed by Alydeed) were scratched. Dreaminofthewin (Successful Appeal - Dreamingatdaybreak by Grand Slam), who had already defeated 4 in the field, was favored. Hammers Bullet (Bernardini - Country Melody by Gone West), who was one of those defeated by Dreaminofthewin, was 21-1. Glorious Strike (Smart Strike - Glorious Rahy by Rahy) was on the muscle in the paddock. Flyskyfly (Sky Mesa - Princess Falina by Mr. Greeley) made a good first appearance, but was getting a little overwrought on the track. Hammers Bullet looked decent. Scotts Vindication (Vindication - Seeking Regina by Seeking the Gold) broke inward and trailed, the others were off well. George A. (Orientate - Quality Label by Elusive Quality) set the pace, and Schillerthekiller (Artie Schiller - Fantast by Luhuk) took after him. Flyskyfly was looming in third. Dreaminofthewin made a move on the outside, and rolled to the front. Would You (Lemon Drop Kid - Wood Run by Deputy Minister) was coming too, but he didn't have enough to catch Dreaminofthewin. Five lengths back was Inhopewearesaved (Afleet Alex - Trick Again by Favorite Trick) in third. Hammers Bullet made up some ground early on, but faded late and finished 8th. Watch the Replay.
