Gonna Tell Mama about this Win

Only the AEs were out, leaving a full field of 12. The track was fast. Tyrus (First Samurai - Beauty's Due by Devil His Due) took the early money, but Gonna Tell Mama (Bernstein - Champagne Royal by Jeblar) was favored at post time. Both finished 2nd in their only previous starts. Houston Harbor (Rockport Harbor - Southern Tour by Tour d'Or) was 11-1, but he looked good, and announcer Mark Johnson made him one of his picks. Street Swagger (Street Cry (IRE) - Etiole by Atticus) caught my eye, and Gonna Tell Mama made a favorable impression on the track. Smarter Than Ever (Smarty Jones - Ever Lasting by General Assembly) balked a bit at the load. Rocket Zone (Suave - Skip a Beat by Skip Trial) broke in the air, and was at the back. There was a scramble for the early lead. Houston Harbor was part of it, along with Gonna Tell Mama, Tyrus, and Southern Rocket (Southern Image - Divine Rockette by Is It True). These four separated from the rest. Gonna Tell Mama began to pull away from the others. But, Houston Harbor kept on. Gonna Tell Mama won it by 1 1/2 lengths, but Houston Harbor never gave up, despite running greenly down the stretch. On the scene late was Heiden (Flower Alley - Granny's Pride by Broad Brush), who grabbed third in his first try. Watch the Replay.

OH Canada

There were no scratches in the 7 horse race. Bijoux Bon (Pure Prize - La Ballerine by Matter of Honor), second in his only start, was favored. Cat Sweep (Bluegrass Cat - Nany's Sweep by End Sweep) was almost 9-1. First-timers Bear On Fire (Fire Slam - Touch the Future by Once Wild) and Oh Canada (Proud Citizen - Oh Livia D. by Ascot Knight) both looked good as they headed to the track. Placentia Bay (El Corredor - Solarity by Ascot Knight) got a strong warmup. Bijoux Bon set the pace, but Bear On Fire and Classical Chant (War Chant - Great Buy by Smart Strike) were not far off. Cat Sweep was about mid-pack on the outside. Bijoux Bon continued to lead into the stretch, with Bear On Fire applying pressure, and Oh Canada getting involved. Bear On Fire hit the rail, causing Oh Canada to check. He was switched to the outside and went by Bear On Fire and Bijoux Bon for the victory. A nice win for Oh Canada considering his traffic trouble. Cat Sweep seemed poised to make a run on the outside, but could get no closer than fourth. The most amazing part of this race was that a horse called Oh Canada went off at more that 7-1 at Woodbine. Watch the Replay.

Tagging the Win

The turf was firm, and the only scratches were the AEs and the MTOs, including Arthur's Tale (Bernardini - Owsley by Harlan). Only four of the runners had previous experience. The favorite was one of the debuters, Walker's Landing (Theatrical (IRE) - Shakespearesister (GB) by Chester House). Iscar (Bernardini - Crimson Palace (SAF) by Elliodor (FR)) was 6-1, and Uncle Carm (Bluegrass Cat - Lady Cruella by Capote) was 21-1. I missed most of the prelims on this one, but King Ting (Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) - Ting A Greeley (GB) by Mr. Greeley) did catch my eye. He went to the front early. The rest were off pretty well, except for War Colony (Not For Love - Colonial Stage by Pleasant Stage), who was off awkwardly. Chasing King Ting were Tag V Eye (Hennessy - Averinsky by Stravinsky), Uncle Carm, and Iscar. Favorite Walker's Landing was at the back. King Ting seemed to be getting brave on top, building up a several length lead. Uncle Carm and Tag V Eye were still involved, but Iscar began to retreat, and Walker's Landing was starting to move. Uncle Carm's jockey tried to move him inside, but he backed off. Walker's Landing flew home, but Tag V Eye had the jump on him, and took the win by a neck, with King Ting tiring to third. Uncle Carm ended up fifth. It looked like he didn't want to go through on the inside. Still, it was a much improved effort, and hopefully he'll stay on the turf. Iscar tired to 10th (last) after being involved for most of the race. Watch the Replay.

Any info on Zenyatta's half brother, he is by Henrythenavigator (Vertigeneux).  I'm anxious to find out if he's going to race and what his status is.

Thanks,

JayJay

jayjay - Zenyatta has a half sister by Henrythenavigator who was born in March of this year. It will be awhile until we know whether she will race.

She also has a yearling half sister by Bernardini named Eblouissante.

Her 3-year-old half brother Souper Spectacular (by Giant's Causeway) has now won 3 in a row since being switched to the turf, most recently winning an allowance race at Aqueduct on Nov. 14.

Continuing in my usual meaningless comments for this blog:  I really love the people who named each of Skip the Sermon and Born to Disco.  My laugh for a Monday.

Re: the Woodbine race: both Oh Canada and Bear on Fire looked pretty good after what they went through.  Maybe they each might be ones to watch.  All I can say about 7/1 is that we were all confused -- after some really nice November days, it suddenly got cold and our brains froze.

To Honor and Serve worked in 47 and change today - so he seems very sharp in advance of the Remsen. I was away on vacation for the Nashua, so I'm thrilled that I will be home to see this boy run. I think he's special.......I also really like Buffum and think he'll run well as well.

Anyone know what's happened to  Gallant Dreams? He's not been on the worktab since his maiden win a few weeks ago. Thanks!

The Real May won, per the charts, by about 4 lengths.. That track must be all kinds of slow. A 5 1/2 furlong race went in 1:08 and change, a mile and 70 yards race in 1:47 and change and this mile race in 1:44!
