To Honor and Serve (Bernardini - Pilfer by Deputy Minister) broke well and made his way to the front in the Remsen Stakes (gr. II). In the stretch, he spurted away to lead by 4. Mucho Macho Man made a dent in his lead late, but To Honor and Serve was never really threatened. He received a 102 Beyer for his effort, and will now go to Florida to prepare for his three-year-old campaign. Behind To Honor and Serve, several had traffic problems, including Buffum (Bernardini - Storm Beauty by Storm Cat), who ducked in at the break, had to steady, and then tired late. He ended up 5th (last). He was making just his second start, so there is plenty of time for improvement. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Remsen here.

In contrast to To Honor and Serve's workman-like performance, Kathmanblu (filly; Bluegrass Cat - Abba Gold by Devil's Bag) delivered a wow performance in the Golden Rod (gr. II) at Churchill Downs. She wasn't too far off in the early going, made her move on the turn and then poured it on, winning by more than 8. It looks as though she has just as good of a kick on the dirt, as she does on the turf, maybe better. It seems that they will aim for the Kentucky Oaks, now that she has passed the dirt test. The time for the Golden Rod was faster than the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes run two races later. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Golden Rod here.

Cane Garden Bay (colt; Rockport Harbor - Trav n' Kris by Snow Chief) seemed poised to make it a perfect stakes day for Maiden Watch in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II), but he flattened out and finished 5th. There were three battling for the win at the wire, with Santiva (Giant's Causeway - Slide by Smarten), who was a maiden coming into the race, getting the victory over Astrology and Major Gain. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes here.

Switching Gears to Win

The track was fast. Hollywood Reckless (Tiznow - Rare Bird by Rahy) was scratched, as well as the AEs including Ipswich Bay (Rockport Harbor - Bolaro by Sandpit (BRZ)). She runs Sunday at Churchill Downs (see below). Spoils (War Front - Conquistadordelite by Conquistador Cielo) was favored, and Switching Gears (Tapit - Pace by Indian Ridge (IRE)) took a lot of play as well. Enchante (Bluegrass Cat - Wear by Arch) was 31-1. Chloe Kate (Afleet Alex - Eye Catching by Alydar) was full of energy on the track. Enchante made a decent appearance. Bay Goose (Petionville - Basqueing Beauty by Bounding Basque) and Here in On (Omega Code - Herecomesacat by Storm Creek) were off slowly. Touch Screen (Bandini - Hot Touch by Touch Gold) went for the lead. Spoils came up the rail to join her. Switching Gears, who wasn't far off, made her move on the turn and pulled away for an easy victory. Moving well late to pick up second was Chloe Kate, who edged a tiring Touch Screen. Enchante never had much punch, finishing 8th. Watch the Replay.

Rocking Out a Victory

The track was fast. Storm 'n Indian (Storm Cat - Fleet Indian by Indian Charlie) was scratched, leaving a field of 8 first-timers. Crossbow (Bernardini - Forest Heiress by Forest Wildcat) was the heavy favorite, with Escort (First Samurai - Guide by Pulpit) practically the only other horse getting attention from the bettors. He looked good in the paddock. Correct Response (Vindication - Search Party by Seeking the Gold) is quite a looker, but I thought 6 furlongs might be a little short for him. During the load, Rum Row (Broken Vow - Pretty Sweet by Fusaichi Pegasus) dumped his rider and took off. He was soon caught, but was a late scratch. Escort went for the lead, but Crossbow went right after him. Those two were soon many lengths in front of the rest, but they were going quick up there: :21.40, :44.50. Crossbow pulled away from Escort, but the battle took its toll and the troops were coming. Rocking Out (Include - Elusive Sugar by Elusive Quality) rolled on by for the victory, and Star Harbour (Indian Charlie - Snug Harbour by Boston Harbor) took second. Crossbow did manage to hold third. Watch the Replay.

Shackleford Comes Through

The AEs were out, including Calvados (Henny Hughes - Morning Time by Gilded Time). Majestic Harbor (Rockport Harbor - Champagne Royale by French Deputy) was favored. Ballyclough (Speightstown - Decadent Designer by Well Decorated) looked really nice in the paddock. Majestic Harbor had some spunk as well. Filly Miss Fifty (Johannesburg - Copa de Oro by Coronado's Quest) broke on top, but was soon passed by Shackleford (Forestry - Oatsee by Unbridled) and Ballyclough. Majestic Harbor was at the back. Ballyclough and Shackleford continued to battle into the stretch, with neither getting much of an advantage. Majestic Harbor began to make up ground on the outside. Shackleford came through on the inside to get the win over Ballyclough. Majestic Harbor didn't threaten the top two, but he did capture third. Watch the Replay.

Taking the Plunge

Red Path (Fusaichi Pegasus - Bold Answer by Dynaformer) was scratched, and the track was fast. Electric Boots (Bellamy Road - Lalka by Dynaformer) took some early money, but drifted up to 9-1 at post time. The favorite was Thunder Lilly (Thunder Gulch - Lilly Capote by Capote). She looked good on the track. Polar Plunge (Successful Appeal - Shakopee by Evansville Slew) and Lost My Halo (Forest Camp - Hide the Halo by Halo's Image) battled for the early lead. They continued to exchange blows throughout, with Polar Plunge getting the upper hand at the finish, despite her rider losing his whip. Sam's Bliss (War Front - Brief Bliss by Navarone) took third over Dixiepixicat (Forest Wildcat - Dixie Probe by Dixieland Band), Thunder Lilly, and Wimbledon Star (Wimbledon - Expect a Star by Valid Expectations), who were separated by necks. Born Flirt is a Born Winner

There were no scratches, as 8 ran. Lunch Time Diva (Posse - Riverman's Tea by Riverman) was favored, and Around the Twig (Bluegrass Cat - Fabulous Finish by Grand Slam) was 7-1. Born Flirt (Speightstown - Rokeby Rosie by Prized) went for the early lead, with Gonelikeahurricane (Exchange Rate - Sangue too Loud by Slew Sangue) involved as well. She took a short lead, but Born Flirt would not go away. She went back to the front. Lunch Time Diva was blocked for much of the race. She got through in time to take second from Gonelikeahurricane, but couldn't catch Born Flirt. There were three noses on the line for fourth, including Around the Twig's. Don from PA/DE

Huge MW day for Bernardini kids for sure...I must say that without totally looking at the breeding, I put $2.00 across the board on Shackleford, thinking he was son of "The Sir S" who I voted for to be included in MW this year...the odds scared me off doing more with my bet, but at least it was a nice winner WPS, he beat a large pretty diverse field at CD....Another impressive winner yesterday was in first race at Fairgrounds...Flash Mash, son of SmartyJones, he looks like he means business on the racetrack, even beingthe favorite. To me it will be interesting to see if SJ's kids do any better after his move to PA, is there a way to track this in 2-3 yrs? Don

Funny about Shackleford. When I was working on the preview, I kept assuming Sir Shackleton too. But, as my philologist friends would say, "etymology by sound is not sound etymology."

Flash Mash was a good looking winner. It won't be hard to track Smarty's KY offspring vs. PA offspring. It would just be a matter of comparing crops based on years bred. His first PA crop will race in 2014. We shall see.

P.S. I am not Jason. My name is Chris.

Hopefully this means Buffum won't go to Dubai; I still love him.

THAS is a very talented horse  and it's going to be fun watching him develop. It's hard for me to tell this, but apparently Mott and Johnny V felt he was looking around during the last part of the race. He's still green - no surprise at all. He's also a drop dead gorgeous colt who LOOKS like a Classics horse - he's long and lanky.  I'm looking forward to seeing him rate behind horses which I think won't be a problem - I think he'll be even better when he does so.

I'm still high on Stay Thirsty (and I guess Pletcher was dead wrong about him not needing a prep going into the BC). He'll be forgotten (he already is) because of Uncle Mo, but ST is a very talented colt.

Crossbow? Probably just a sprinter, but he was clearly better than Escort - Alan Garcia was awful.

I keep hearing "workman-like" in terms of THAS, but he was very good - just wasn't as easy as it was in the Nashua. Still, he ran a 102 BSF.........not bad at all.

Workmanlike is a very accurate description of To Honor and Serve's win and to me, it wasn't particulary impressive. Not after watching Uncle Mo in the BC race.

Again -for me, Kathmanblu was the star of the day.

There is nothing wrong with workmanlike, workmanlike wins plenty of races. But, AnneM is right. Watch To Honor and Serve and then Kathmanblu. There is a difference. It's not just margin of victory, it's acceleration.

Ok, there's no point in arguing about this. I see no reason to compare THAS to Kathmanblue. She was very impresive and she's a good filly, but I've seen all I need to from THAS. He's got a great turn of foot.....he's shown that in his previous races.  I think this is a very serious prospect for the classics next year.

By the way "Midnight Visit" by HH was awesome in her maiden win, kept the speed and I am glad I singled her in my doubles and win 3-4's and pick 6 which 1 had 5 of 6

She put away some nice fillies. Way to father Henny HUGE!~ Don

Watch out for this Baffert horse "Alcindor" a 1.15 million purchase, yesterday (sunday) he ran in a N1X allowance race @ hollywood in the 8 th race. The way he won was better than any 2 year old this weekend in stakes.

Jim, Alcindor is a 3-year-old.

Maiden Watch, you had nothing on the PA Nursery S. I follow @derbycontenders on twitter and he posted that there's a rumor that Ucan'tcme was scratched from that race b/c he died of colic. B-H and none of the trades have reported this. True or false???

Maurice - MaidenWatch follows the first crop of 5 sires as determined by readers. This years stallions are: Bellamy Road, Bernardini, Bluegrass Cat, Henny Hughes, and Rockport Harbor. We are primarily focused on maiden races, however, other races are mentioned featuring MaidenWatch graduates, especially stakes.

I do encourage readers to comment about any maidens that they've seen or impressive 2-year-olds in general. Please feel free to discuss the PA Nursery Stakes and its winner Der Meister. You can see a replay of the race here: www.bloodhorse.com/.../pennsylvania-nursery-s

Regarding Ucan'tcme, I heard the same rumor that you did. Why don't you ask @derbycontenders since that is where you heard the rumor.

Maiden Watch - that twitter feed was asking for confirmation. I guess he couldn't find it in the trades, either. Strange that none have even mentioned the scratch of such a heavy fave, let alone investigated it. Not trying to point any fingers at B-H here, as TT and DRF have had nothing either. I wanted to key him in exotics, which is why I'm particularly interested. Thanks for the good work.
