Machen (Distorted Humor - Ready's Gal by More Than Ready) might be one to keep an eye on. He won his debut in fine fashion at Fair Grounds, despite breaking slowly. Watch the Replay.

Hitting the Target

He's in the Bag (Holy Bull - Bag Lady Jane by Devil's Bag) and Nykid Time to Jazz (Lemon Drop Kid - Time to Jazz by Kentucky Jazz) were scratched. Crossbow (Bernardini - Forest Heiress by Forest Wildcat) was an even bigger favorite than he was in his debut. He was looking good. First-timer Deccan Odyssey (Silver Train - Madam Full Charge by Gulch) wasn't too crazy about getting the tack on, he also objected a bit to the load. He broke a bit awkwardly, bothering Magnificent Moon (Malibu Moon - Bossi (IRE) by Sadler's Wells) and The Fed Eased (Montbrook - Valid Invitation by Take Me Out). Crossbow broke well and wanted to go, but the jockey let Deccan Odyssey lead earlier. He didn't lead long, however, with Crossbow going by. Crossbow continued to lead, with The Fed Eased moving into second. Crossbow was cruising up front, never threatened, and he won by 3. The Fed Eased was another 7 in front of Magnificent Moon. First time out, Crossbow went :21.40, and :44.50. Today, the fractions were :23.18 and :46.73. That made all the difference. Watch the Replay.

Adulare and Stormberg to the Wire

There were no scratches, as all 10 ran. Certain Appeal (Rockport Harbor - African Sunrise by Tale of the Cat) took the early money, but Adulare (Flatter - Corking by Sensitive Prince) was odds on at post time. Where's the Beef (Rockport Harbor - Clair de Lune by Regal Classic) was 30-1. Certain Appeal looked good on the track. Stormberg (Storm Cat - Serena's Song by Rahy) acted up a bit, flaunting his Storm Cat genes. I kind of liked the look of Junction Inn (Pioneering - Manele Bay by Bates Motel) and Professor Palmer (Mr. Livingston - Drumsticks by Strike the Gold). The start was good, with Certain Appeal and Stormberg dueling early. Where's the Beef was about mid-pack. Certain Appeal threw in the towel after a half, retreating to finish 9th. Junction Inn and Professor Palmer moved into the picture. And, making a menacing move on the outside, was Adulare. He went to the lead, but Stormberg channeled momma Serena's Song and fought back. These two separated from the rest, and dueled to the wire, where Adulare got his nose in front for the victory. It was a long way back (10 1/2 lengths) to Professor Palmer in third. Where's the Beef, who was bumped on the first turn, finished 5th. Watch the Replay.

No Catching Wahoo Babe

The only scratch was Diamond of Dubai (E Dubai - Coming Alive by Aptitude), and the track was fast. Achieving (Bernardini - Teeming by Storm Cat) was favored. Also getting some play was Wahoo Babe (Jump Start - Glory Bea Trix by Atticus). Our Lady in Red (Pioneering - Apical by Belong to Me) looked good in the post parade, and Alley Sprout (Flower Alley - Brusque by Canaveral) had some spring in her step. Our Lady in Red broke best, but Wahoo Babe took the lead from her inside post. Mountain Rose (Distorted Humor - Secret Thyme by Storm Cat) and Our Lady in Red were in pursuit. Achieving was way off the rail. She made a menacing move on the outside, but stalled, finishing fourth. Wahoo Babe continued to lead with Our Lady in Red chasing. Our Lady in Red never gave up, but she couldn't catch Wahoo Babe, who was 2 lengths in front at the wire. D'oro Princess (Medaglia d'Oro - Petite Princess by Dayjur) ran well late to pick up the show spot. Achieving ran a decent race, and should move forward. A mile and 70 yards is a tough distance for a debut. Watch the Replay.

As usual, Joyous Music (filly; Bellamy Road - Pyrite Queen by Wavering Monarch) sprinted to a daylight lead in race 4 at Calder, a 5.5 furlong Maiden Claiming race (Claiming Price $25,000). However, this time she did not come back, and won by 7 1/4 lengths in her 11th start. She was claimed out of the race. As stated in my New Year's post, Joyous Music is one of my favorites, so I was happy to see her win. However, I would have been happier if she hadn't been favored. Watch the Replay.

Real Rockport (filly; Rockport Harbor - Newhall Road by Dixieland Band) was favored in race 1 at Santa Anita, a 7 furlong Maiden Claiming race (Claiming Price $30,000), and took the lead despite hopping at the start, but weakened and finished third. Watch the Replay.

Irish Legacy (filly; Bellamy Road - Atherbest by Silver Hawk) finished 5th in race 3 at Turfway Park, a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming race (Claiming Price $7,500), picking up a few places late. Watch the Replay.

I believe Crossbow got an 86 BSF for his race today. He's a talented horse - I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops.

The first-crop sires of 2011 that intrigue me the most are: Any Given Saturday, Corinthian, Hard Spun, Invasor, Stevie Wonderboy, and Street Sense.

I was following the @derbycontenders twitter feed yesterday and that guy tipped off Machen as a runner before the race. Howard doesn't do well with first-time starters, so I dismissed his chances and paid dearly. Machen's effort was pretty remarkable.
