News and Notes

Don't forget to vote in the poll to determine who we should follow in 2011. The poll is included at the bottom of this post. Early returns show Hard Spun, Street Sense, and Invasor entrenched in the top 3 spots. But, there is a good fight for the last two, with English Channel, Corinthian, and Lawyer Ron separated by just a handful of votes.

Hearts Have Been Mended

A full field of 12 was in action on the fast track. Gift List (Bernardini - Private Gift by Unbridled) and her entrymate Startling Beauty (Johannesburg - Gold Streamer by Forty Niner) were favored. Kindersley (Bernardini - Home Court by Storm Cat) was 6-1, Ipswich Bay (Rockport Harbor - Bolaro by Sandpit (BRZ)) was 13-1, and R Gypsy Gold (Bernardini - Broadway Gold by Seeking the Gold) was 15-1. However, she did take some money in the early wagering. Malibu Spice (Malibu Moon - Buxton Spice by Bold Ruckus) had some spunk in the paddock, and Mending Hearts (Street Cry (IRE) - Satin Cat by Storm Cat) looked good on the track. Kindersley looked the best of our four to me. Mending Hearts took the lead at the start. Gift List and Startling Beauty were after her. Not too far off were the gypsies: R Gypsy Gold and Gypsy Preacher (Tapit - Citi Sounds by Citidancer). Ipswich Bay and Kindersley were near the back. Startling Beauty and Gift List went after Mending Hearts, with Startling Beauty poking her head in front. However, Mending Hearts regained control and began to pull away. The only one with a chance to catch her was R Gypsy Gold, but she was 1 1/2 lengths behind at the finish. It was a long way back to third (10 3/4 lengths), where Mae Ruler (Roman Ruler - Wha'pa by Victory Gallop) got her head in front of Startling Beauty. Kindersley was moving late to take fifth, while Gift List retreated to 8th. Ipswich Bay didn't show much, coming in 10th. Interesting that Calder horses finished 1-3 in this one, one at 7-2, the other at 125-1. Watch the Replay.
