The 2011 Stallions Are...

The 2011 Stallion Poll has been closed and the winners are: Hard Spun, Street Sense, Invasor, Corinthian, and English Channel. Thanks to everyone for voting. I should have the pages with their current named 2-year-olds updated by next week. For those new to the blog, this means that these stallions will be the focus of the blog for the coming year, and most of the North American Maiden Special Weight entries for their offspring will be previewed. I will also note works, especially first works or new works by horses not mentioned previously in the blog. For convenience sake, the blog is North American-centric, although, there will be some mention of European entries. In addition, although these stallions determine which races are chosen, I will discuss each horse in the race (as evidenced below by the previews for the 3-year-old races). I will continue to follow the 3-year-olds by the 2010 stallions (Bellamy Road, Bernardini, Bluegrass Cat, Henny Hughes, and Rockport Harbor), until the 2-year-old races begin.

Some of you have asked if I could follow just one or two more stallions. The answer is no. First of all, remember that adding one stallion means adding around 100 additional runners to monitor. Furthermore, the Maiden Watch blog is only a small part of my Blood-Horse duties, and I can only work on the blog in between and after other things, or on my days off (Sunday and Monday). This explains why it is often not posted until 2 or 3 in the morning. I am not complaining, it is my choice to do the blog, just explaining why it's near impossible for me to track more stallions the way that I do. One solution would be to follow more stallions more cursory, which I am contemplating. Another solution is for readers to take ownership of a stallion, and note when offspring are running, like frequent commenter K.Rob does for European runners by our stallions. For my part, I will try to be more conscious of offspring by first-crop stallions running in other races by noting them in the "News and Notes" section, but I cannot guarantee that this will be anywhere near comprehensive. In addition, please note any and all impressive maiden winners (or maidens who made an impression without winning). We have replays for most North American tracks and I can link to the replay, so that everyone can see it.

Winning Daddy's Honor

Barganha (Grave Digger - Arrepio by Subordination) was scratched, leaving 6 to run on the fast track. Daddy's Honor (The Daddy - Road to Honor by Double Honor) was the heavy favorite, Jewel of Rockport (Rockport Harbor - Box of Jewels by Half a Year) was 6-1. I kind of liked the look of Rap Star (Medaglia d'Oro - Quite a Rapper by Dixieland Band). Jewel of Rockport looked alert and ready for action. All of the fillies looked a little jumpy on the track, except for Frontaine (Lemon Drop Kid - Canavakiss by Rakeen), who was calm and collected. Jewel of Rockport acted up in the gate. She was backed out, moved back in, and they were off. There was a bit of bumping at the start. Daddy's Honor scampered to the lead, and was soon 5 in front. Gilded Charm (Gilded Time - Herdy's Charm by Mountain Cat) and Jewel of Rockport were the closest pursuers. Gilded Charm made a dent in Daddy's Honor lead in the stretch, but the latter horse had plenty left to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Jewel of Rockport held third by a neck over Frontaine. Watch the Replay.

Sassy's Dream Win

Only the AEs were scratched, and the turf was firm. Celestial Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Heavenly Glory by Honour and Glory) was favored. Noble Charlotte (Include - Relaxing Green by Formal Gold), My Redbyrd (Royal Academy - Polar Bird (IRE) by Thatching (IRE)), and Strike It Green (Smart Strike - Green Noble by Green Dancer) also received some attention from the bettors, and Gharbiah (Bernardini - Cuando Quiere by Affirmed) was 22-1. Celestial Kitten looked good in the paddock. Gharbiah looks like she is made to go a distance. My Redbyrd was a tad reluctant to load. John Velazquez hopped off, and in she went. The start was fair, and there was a scramble for the early lead. Stella Di Sicilia (Star Dabbler - Sweet Devils Food by Came Home) grabbed it. She was pressed by Crystian d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro - Crystal Cove by Kris S.). Celestial Kitten and Gorgelicious (More Than Ready - Avalon Place by Fusaichi Pegasus) were in the thick of things as well. Gharbiah was at the back after steadying early. Crystian d'Oro took a brief lead, but was quickly overtaken by Celestial Kitten. But, coming on strong from the back was Sassy's Dream (Flower Alley - Model Performer by Theatrical (IRE)), who swept by everyone for a 2 1/2 length win. Celetial Kitten held second, and My Redbyrd made a good run for third. Gharbiah picked up a couple of spots to finish 8th. Watch the Replay.
