Mr. Commons (Artie Schiller - Joustabout by Apalachee), who finished 6th behind Sinai (Rockport Harbor - Dontgetinmyway by Machiavellian) on the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park on December 18, appreciated the switch to grass at Santa Anita, as he romped in race 2 on the downhill course. Stormy Parade (Leading the Parade - Stormy Sis by Stormy Atlantic) and Ivy Connection (Forestry - Capote's Crown by Capote) were scratched, leaving 8 to run on the fast track. Arch Traveler (Sky Mesa - Mettle by Silver Deputy) was the heavy favorite. Break Up the Game (Bernardini - Pennant Champion by Mr. Prospector) and Heron Lake (Bernardini - Miss Kate by Storm Cat) were both around 6-1. Heron Lake made a favorable appearance in the paddock, and Break Up the Game was a little skittish on the track. Favorite Arch Traveler went to the lead, but Heron Lake was right with him. Break Up the Game was sitting off the pace. Arch Traveler and Heron Lake continued to battle, with Hammersmith (Johannesburg - Bella Bellucci by French Deputy) getting involved as well. Arch Traveler weakened a bit, but Heron Lake and Hammersmith fought to the wire, with Heron Lake getting his head there first. Break Up the Game was running well late, just missing third. Nice races for both of the Bernadinis in this one. Watch the Replay.

Kit Carson Conquers Oaklawn

Shezaladyanne (Langfuhr - Shezarealquietlady by Real Quiet) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. Song of a Siren (Unbridled's Song - Stormy Venus by Stormy Atlantic) took most of the money, but Bryan's Jewel (Rockport Harbor - Saphiria by Touch Gold) was respected at a hair under 4-1. She was getting blinkers off, and displayed some spunk on the track. Song of a Siren looked good on the track, and longshot Dare We Dream (Mingun - Dhamma by Broad Brush) caught my eye. She went to the lead from her rail spot. Her closest pursuers were Going to Kukaro (Speightstown - Jeanne's Honor by Honour and Glory) and Song of a Siren. Bryan's Jewel was in mid-pack. Going to Kukaro took the lead in the stretch, as Dare We Dream weakened. But, Kit Carson (Silver Train - Carson Kit by Carson City) was coming, and she put her big blazed face in front, winning by 1 1/4 lengths. Returned to Sender (Slew City Slew - Sharons Song by Badger Land) ran on late for third. Bryan's Jewel backed up late, finishing 7th. Watch the Replay.

The Supreme Ruler

Zoebear (Bellamy Road - Inthemiddleofitall by Proper Reality) was scratched. Statehood (Bluegrass Cat - Heavenly Humor by Distorted Humor) was 18-1. The favorite was Ordained (Pulpit - People's Princess by Meadowlake). He looked good early on, but got a little aggitated as post time approached. Longshot Warrior (A.P. Warrior - Satin Breeze by Fly So Free) looked ready for action. He and Andretti (Mr. Greeley - Sparky Three by Monarchos) went for the early lead. Longshot Warrior won that battle, and Ordained and Andretti chased him early. These three separated from the rest of the field by about 10 lengths. As they rounded the final turn, the pack began to gain. Heavenly Shiloh (Broken Vow - Nasranian Devil by Silver Ghost) and Special Tree (Special Rate - Fake Plastic Tree by You and I) attacked together, with Heavenly Shiloh hitting the front. But flying from the back of the pack were Supreme Ruler (Don't Get Mad - Smolensk by Danzig) and Admiral Rocket (Successful Appeal - Foolish Kiss by Kissin Kris), who powered on by. It was 34-1 Supreme Ruler that took the prize by a length. Admiral Rocket was another 3 1/2 lengths in front of Special Tree. Statehood didn't have much impact, finishing 7th. There were three first-timers in this race, and they finished first, second, and fourth. Pacesetters Longshot Warrior and Ordained ended up 11th (last) and 9th. Watch the Replay.
