News and Notes

The 2010 Experimental Free Handicap was released today, which is a weight-based assessment of last year's 2-year-olds. Basically, it imagines what weight each horse would receive in a handicapping race at a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt. To be eligible, a horse must finish among the top four in graded or listed stakes races run in the continental United States. To Honor and Serve (Bernardini) was the highest ranked Maiden Watch horse on the male list, coming in second overall at 123 pounds (5 pounds behind Uncle Mo). Other Maiden Watch males on the list: Stay Thirsty (Bernardini - 114), Biondetti (Bernardini - 106), and Fort Hughes (Henny Hughes - 103). View the complete male list here. On the female side, A Z Warrior (Bernardini) was at 119 pounds, 4 pounds below top-weighted Awesome Feather. Other Maiden Watch fillies on the list: Kathmanblu (Bluegrass Cat - 118), Position Limit (Bellamy Road - 116), and May Day Rose (Rockport Harbor - 113). View the complete female list here.

A Winner With Withgreatpleasure

There were no scratches in the 5 horse field, and the track was fast. Lunch Time Diva (Posse - Riverman's Tea by Riverman) was the heavy favorite off of her previous 2nd-place finishes. She was on her toes in the paddock. Around the Twig (Bluegrass Cat - Fabulous Finish by Grand Slam) was also getting play at the windows. Withgreatpleasure (Hold That Tiger - Doubleyourpleasure by Double Negative) looked best on the track. The start was good, except for Love Theway Youare (Arch - Diversa by Tabasco Cat), who tried to make a right turn and trailed the field. She was getting blinkers off in this race, and I wonder if they will go back on after that. Around the Twig went to the front, along with Lunch Time Diva. They took turns leading, until the stretch, when Around the Twig put away Lunch Time Diva. However, Withgreatpleasure was coming. Around the Twig put up a fight, but she couldn't hold off Withgreatpleasure, who won by a half length. Making a move late was Love Theway Youare, who finished a good third. Nice show payoffs in this one, with the even-money choice finishing fourth. Kudos to Matthew W for predicting the winner. Watch the Replay.
