Stakes Results

The track was muddy for the Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct, Toby's Corner (Bellamy Road - Brandon's Ride by Mister Frisky) broke on top, but allowed the others to go on by. Hugging the rail for most of the early going, he was swung out on the turn to make his run. He wore down pace-setting favorite J J's Lucky Train and pulled away for a smart 2 length victory. Arthur's Tale (Bernardini - Owsley by Harlan) made a middle move, but couldn't sustain it and finished fourth.Toby's Corner is the fourth stakes winner for Bellamy Road. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Whirlaway here.

R Fast Cat (Bluegrass Cat - R Fast Lady by Artax) had no early speed in the WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park, but he was rolling late to grab second money. However, he was no match for favorite Twinspired (Harlan's Holiday - Historical Drive by El Prado (IRE)), who won by 4 1/4 lengths. Bluegrass Dreamer (Bluegrass Cat - Spring Flight by Miswaki) was involved for awhile, but retreated and finished 9th. Interestingly, Twinspired was the only horse in the race whose most recent start was not at Turfway. Watch the Replay.

May Day Rose (Rockport Harbor - May Day Bluff by Pine Bluff) set the pace in the Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I), but they were going much too fast early (:21.58, :44.25, 1:08.77). She tired and finished 4th. The winner was Zazu (Tapit - Rhumb Line by Mr. Greeley), who outfinished previously unbeaten Turbulent Descent. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Las Virgenes here.

Striding Ahead for the Win

Fly On the Wall (Artie Schiller - Beautiful by Rahy) was scratched, and the track was wet fast. Fifth District (Sweetsouthernsaint - Mauvin Gway by Rajab) was favored, and Uncle Carm (Bluegrass Cat - Lady Cruella by Capote) was 7-1. Debuting Zarbo (Burning Roma - Silver Dollar Kate by Green Dancer) looked a little skittish. It was a good start for all except Tibo Cafe (Rey de Cafe - Silver Laces by Silver Buck), who stumbled a bit and trailed. Striding Ahead (Empire Maker - Helstra by Nureyev) went to the front. Zarbo looked wild, but he was up there chasing. Fifth District and Uncle Carm were not far off. Striding Ahead continued to lead, as Zarbo retreated. Fifth District and Uncle Carm kept pace for awhile, but in the stretch, Striding Ahead poured it on, pulling away for a 6 3/4 length victory. Uncle Carm outnosed Fifth District for the place spot, an improved result for him. Watch the Replay.

Cal Nation Roars

California (A.P. Indy - Madcap Escapade by Hennessy), the million dollar yearling, was scratched. He will run in the first at Gulfstream on Sunday, February 6 instead. Also scratched were the AEs, who are also entered in the first at Gulfstream on Sunday. Debuting Cal Nation (Distorted Humor - She's a Winner by A. P. Indy), half brother to Bluegrass Cat, was favored. Occelli (Bernardini - Grannies Feather by At Full Feather) was 4-1. He warmed up well. 45-1 Eighth Avenue (Broken Vow - Fifth Avenue by Monarchos) caught my eye in the prelims. Benergy (Tapit - Pearly Beach by Tiznow) acted up in the gate during the load. The riders got off, and the horses were backed out. Benergy and Eighth Avenue were scratched. After some delay, the horses were reloaded. Cal Nation broke on top, but let Jack London (Tale of the Cat - Frost Princess by Waquoit) go by to set the pace. Cal Nation followed in second, with Our Noble Heart (Lion Heart - Act So Noble by Wavering Monarch) and Kanagaro (Indian Charlie - Saratoga Cat by Sir Cat) in pursuit as well. Occelli was sitting around mid-pack. Cal Nation was given his cue, and moved on by Jack London. He went on to a 7 3/4 length flashy win. 40-1 Jack London held second, while Kanagaro was third. Occelli lost ground on the turn, retreating to finish 8th. Watch the Replay.

St. Ivan is Outofsiteoutofmind

All eleven ran on the Polytrack. Outofsiteoutofmind (Out of Place - Never a Bride by Belong to Me) was favored, and looked the part in the paddock. Rob's Rock (Rockport Harbor - Nuvem by Dynaformer) was respected some at 4-1, and Knows How to Rock (Rockport Harbor - Unchained Princess by Clever Trick) was 20-1. St. Ivan (Suave - Royal Prize by Kingmambo) caught my eye in the post parade, and Rob's Rock looked good on the track. He showed good speed at the start, but was forced very wide on account of his outside post. Outofsiteoutofmind went to the lead, with St. Ivan sticking close. Knows How to Rock was in a good position on the rail. Rob's Rock began to retreat after a half, he ended up 11th (last). Outofsiteoutofmind continued to show the way, but St. Ivan was getting closer. He went on by Outofsiteoutofmind to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Grace's Devil (Devil His Due - Go Grace Go by Sefapiano) was third, and Knows How to Rock was fourth. Not the most dazzling performance for Knows How to Rock, but an improvement over last time. Watch the Replay.
