The million dollar yearling California (A.P. Indy - Madcap Escapade by Hennessy) finished a non-threatening third in his debut at Gulfstream. The winner was Arch Traveler (Sky Mesa - Mettle by Silver Deputy), who pulled away from Ninja Blade (Johannesburg - Mekko Hokte by Holy Bull). Watch the Replay. View Race Details.

A Smart Win

My Other Girl (Bernardini - Guilty Pleasure by Pine Bluff) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. The entry of Miss Smarty Pants (Smarty Jones - Devotion Unbridled by Unbridled) and Palm Desert Island (Unbridled's Song - Desert Stormer by Storm Cat) opened as the favorite, and went down further in the odds as the betting progressed. No Three Words (Rockport Harbor - Valentine Verse by Dynaformer) was dismissed at almost 26-1. Enchanted Mesa (Sky Mesa - Sweet Solairo by Bernstein) caught my eye in the post parade. Tiz Lovely (Tiznow - Princess Grand by Grand Slam), Enchanted Mesa, and Miss Smarty Pants mixed it up early. Draw It (Tapit - Illustrated by Deputy Minister) and No Three Words were just off the leading group. Miss Smarty Pants moved even with Tiz Lovely, and Draw It caught up to the leaders. Miss Smarty Pants went to the front on the turn, and then pulled away for a 3 1/2 length win. Draw It was secure in second, and Vaguely Familiar (A.P. Indy - Chercheuse by Seeking the Gold) was going well late to pick up third. No Three Words clocked in at 6th. Interestingly, the other half of the entry, Palm Desert Island, finished last. Hothersal Shows Them All

Only the MTO and the AEs were scratched, and the turf was firm. Hothersal (Smart Strike - Steel Shed by Theatrical (IRE)) was the lukewarm choice at first flash of the tote, but ended up at less than even money. Messner (Bernardini - Macoumba by Mr. Prospector) was 10-1, although he took some early money. Jeanbaptiste Corot (Mr. Greeley - Ethel Anna by Storm Cat) caught my eye in the paddock, looking pretty good for a dead painter. But, I couldn't fault the appearance of the favorite. Messner, debuting in blinkers, looked a little unsure of the proceedings. Kentucky Reign (Distorted Humor - Summerly by Summer Squall) looked good on the track. There was a scramble for the early lead. Tizangelo (Tiznow - Wistful Prospect by Allen's Prospect), Jeanbaptiste Corot, and Sasueno (Broken Vow - Stately Kitty by Honour and Glory) were all involved. Messner was near the back. Jeanbaptiste Corot the lead in the stretch, but there was company coming. Hothersal had the jump, and blew by the others for a 2 1/4 length victory. Kentucky Reign looked good finishing second, and Bombaguia (Borrego - Wishful Legacy by Lyphard's Wish (FR)) ran on for third. Messner passed a few to finish 7th. Watch the Replay.

This is the third time that Calvados (Henny Hughes - Morning Time by Gilded Time) and Kiwi Humor (Bluegrass Cat - High Humor by Distorted Humor) have tried to run at Parx Racing. The last two tries were wiped out when racing was canceled. I am not convinced that they will run tomorrow at Parx, as they canceled most of the card on Saturday and the whole card on Sunday. However, since most of the field was the same from the last time that they were entered, I'll go ahead and preview the race.

Calvados has run twice, finishing 6th at 6 furlongs at Keeneland on October 28, and 2nd in a 5.5 furlong Maiden Claiming race at Parx Racing on January 1. He last worked on January 25 at Parx Racing, going 4 furlongs in :49.00. He is a half brother to 3 winners, including stakes winner Morner, who earned $262,002. He has been working at Parx Racing for some time, including 4 furlongs in :51.47 on January 31. He also has a couple of 5 furlong gate works, in 1:02.00 and in 1:02.21. He sold for $12,000 as a yearling, and is the first foal out of the unraced mare High Humor. High Humor is a half sister to grade II stakes-placed Storm Passage and grade I winner Tactical Cat. Both of those siblings are by Storm Cat, sire of Bluegrass Cat.

Atlantic King (Stormy Atlantic - Funny Mood (ARG) by Equalize) and Uniquely (The Daddy - Cope With Reality by Marco Bay) finished 2nd and 3rd in a 6 furlong race at Parx Racing on December 31. Atlantic King has four additional starts. He finished 10th in his debut at 5.5 furlongs at Monmouth on August 8, and then ran three times at Parx Racing, finishing 8th at 6 furlong on October 12, 6th at that same distance on November 20, and 8th at a mile and a sixteenth on December 11. Atlantic King sold for $37,000 as a weanling, for $115,000 as a yearling, and for $100,000 as a 2-year-old. Funny Mood, dam of Atlantic King, was a group II winner in Argentina and earned $133,548. Funny Mood has produced the winner Gabby Girl. Uniquely previously finished 2nd in a 6.5 furlong race at Parx Racing on December 10. He is out of the winning mare Cope With Reality, who has produced 3 winners, including stakes winner Dulce Realidad. Dulce Realidad earned $221,300. Cope With Reality is a half sister to 4 winners.

All of the Above (Iron Deputy - Sprinkles Rodeogal by Heff) has run twice and faced Atlantic King in both of his starts, finishing in front of him each time. He was 2nd on November 20, and 6th on December 11. All of the Above is out of the winning mare Sprinkles Rodeogal, who earned $160,120.
