News and Notes

So much for having the 6th at Gulfstream covered, both My Other Girl (Bernardini - Guilty Pleasure by Pine Bluff), and MTO Kindersley (Bernardini - Home Court by Storm Cat) were scratched. The winner was Naples Bay (Giant's Causeway - Cappucino Bay by Bailjumper), the half sister to Medaglia d'Oro, who was a $350,000 weanling. Inflation Hedge (Badge of Silver - Royal Veagess by Rock Royalty) was second, and Silver Screamer (Cozzene - West Sider by Gone West) was third. Watch the Replay. View Race Details

Also, as predicted, there was no racing at Parx Racing, so Steinbrenner (gelding; Bellamy Road - So Close by North Tower) and New House Rules (colt; Rockport Harbor - Migrate by Storm Bird) will wait for another day.

Since we have no Maiden Special Weight entries for February 10, I will preview three for February 11 and not do a blog tomorrow.

February 9 Result

Hammers Bullet (gelding; Bernardini - Country Melody by Gone West) sat off the early pace in race 4 at Tampa Bay Downs, a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming race (Claiming Price $8,000), and then pulled away in the stretch for a 1 3/4 length victory. Watch the Replay.

Yes Chris, "Hammer's bullet" beat a nice favorite at TB and beat me out of double/pick3 and I did a double take after re-reading winner at GS "Naples Bay" the connections and breeding, wow, I went with that other girl cost me a really nice daily double, I think the previous race that paid so good #10 horse I also did a double take, I think it was trained by Todd Pletcher! Just going by memory but that is how it may have gone.....yesteday," and that was yesterday, and yesterday's gone.." Chad and Jeremy from my high school days Don

buffum got fifth, but i think it was only because of him moving a tad bit too early, since the winner thought he forth place horses waited till midstretch before they moved with their bids at buffum and he was coming off a long layoff, so he was probably a short horse as well.

Blood-Horse Staff

anna - I thought it was a good effort from Buffum. He did make a nice move, probably got a bit tired, but wasn't that far from the winner at the end. The winner (Splash Point), who did catch my eye in the warm-up, had the advantage of a recent race over the track, as he was 2nd in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial on Jan. 20.

Betsy

Glad to hear that Buffum ran well.....and that his Remsen nightmare is in the past. This was also his first start on synthetics, so there's that to consider.  He showed a ton of ability in his debut - and guts. Did he come from far off the pace here or was he stalking it, like he did in his debut?  Sounds like an encouraging performance - I hope Godolphin was happy with it.

10 Feb 2011 2:03 PM
Blood-Horse Staff

Betsy - He came from off the pace and went wide. The winner was even farther back, but he saved ground most of the way. You can see the replay here: www.dubairacingclub.com/.../videos

Chris - thank you!

FYI, per the DRF, Johnny V is going to ride To Honor and Serve in the FOY.

This makes no sense to me; JV is going to ride Uncle Mo, so why not get THAS used to a new jock now? I'm very surprised as Mott had stated that he wanted to get a new jock for the horse as soon as possible.

The only reasons I can think of is that (a) Mott really wants to win this race and prefers a jock THAS is used to and (b), which is more likely, that he wants THAS to rate again after his last 2 starts and he'd rather JV be on board for that.

Wow, I was impressed with Buffum - he made a very strong move and just got tired at the end........I wasn't sure what to expect, but he sure ran well.

10 Feb 2011 5:54 PM

LOL Bin Suroor sounded so "blah" about Buffum's performance - he said that he expected better and that he ran "ok".  I don't think he's going to run back in the UAE Derby and even if he does, I don't think he's their Derby horse. I think Godolphin must have had stupidly high hopes for this horse after the layoff and running on a new track - and he was only beaten a couple of lengths, if that.

well anything is progress after most of the tracks being slammed with snow on the east coast and i seen the harness horses at woodbine, they wasn't so much racing on polytrack as they was trotting and pacing on a couple inches of snow. as the track surface was completely covered.
