News and Notes

Our first 2-year-old work of 2011 belongs to the English Channel filly R Next Gem (English Channel - Jewels N Gems by Acceptable), who went 3 furlongs in :37.20 at Calder on February 12. She is the second foal out of stakes winner Jewels N Gems, who won her first two races at 2, and earned $274,100 in her career. Jewels N Gems first foal is stakes-placed R Bling, who was a winner at 2. Jewels N Gems is a full sister to one winner, and a half sister to one winner.

The 2011 Early Triple Crown Nomination List was released this morning. Bernardini leads all sires with 18 nominations (in alphabetical order): Arthur's Tale, Bayamo, Bomber Boy, Break Up the Game, Cassini Flight, Crossbow, Gallant Dreams, Golden Triumph, Heron Lake, Iscar, Major Duomo, Messner, My Dividend, Occelli, Opening Move, Stay Thirsty, To Honor and Serve, and Wilburn. I find it interesting to find Wilburn on the list. He was our first Bernardini worker, and sold for $625,000, but has yet to run. Bellamy Road has 5 on the list: Bellamy's Boss, Lumberyard Jack, Sterling Legend, Toby's Corner, and Zoebear. Rockport Harbor also has five: Billy Smart, Cane Garden Bay, Houston Harbor, Majestic Harbor, and Sinai. Bluegrass Cat has Blue Laser and Cat Sweep, and Fort Hughes is the only nominee for Henny Hughes. You can view the complete list in a sortable format here.

Ipswich Bay (filly; Rockport Harbor - Bolaro by Sandpit (BRZ)) made a move in the Florida Oaks on the Tampa Bay Downs turf, but flattened out and finished 6th. I thought she still looked a little green out there. Dynamic Holiday won the race, with Holidaysatthefarm closing well to complete the holiday exacta. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Florida Oaks here.

A Majestic Win

There were no scratches, as all 7 ran on the fast track. Majestic Harbor (Rockport Harbor - Champagne Royale by French Deputy) was favored, and looked the part. He and Awesome Bet (Awesome Again - Ellie's Moment by Kris S.) went for the early lead, Majestic Harbor got it. Awesome Bet assumed a stalking position, and was Majestic Harbor's shadow for much of the race. In the stretch, however, Majestic Harbor left his shadow behind. He pulled away for a nice, easy, 6 1/4 length victory. Awesome Bet held off Minepower (Mineshaft - Red Soul by Storm Bird) for the second spot. As mentioned above, Majestic Harbor is a Triple Crown nominee, and he certainly looked the part in this one. Watch the Replay.

Surfactant Makes it Count

All 10 ran, forcing AE entrant Ground Force (Bowman's Band - Liese by A. P Jet) to stay on the sidelines. Surfactant (Closing Argument - Spanish Mill by Boone's Mill) was the heavy favorite, Appian Way (Bellamy Road - Roman Jet by Roman Diplomat) got no love at 42-1. But, he looked good in the paddock. I kind of liked the look of Greeley's Law (Greeley's Galaxy - Kate's Law by Corporate Report). Surfactant was on top early, but he was off the rail and Closingtothewire (Closing Argument - Evil Empress by Devil His Due) came through on the inside to make the pace. Appian Way had one beat early. Surfactant and Closingtothewire continued to spar, with Greeley's Law making a move on the outside. Surfactant pulled free in the stretch for a 3 length victory. Second was a battle between Sound of Drums (Fusaichi Pegasus - Morning Sun by Dehere) and a rallying Appian Way, with Sound of Drums getting his neck in front. There was a an objection against second-place Sound of Drums, and they studied the film for a long time, but no change was made. Surfactant is a Triple Crown nominee Watch the Replay.

Rattlesnake Bridge Shakes Them Up

The AEs were out, including Rocked (Henny Hughes - Potential Pleasure by Unbridled) and Bluember (Bluegrass Cat - Silver Lace by Silver Deputy). Rattlesnake Bridge (Tapit - Prall Street by Cherokee Run), one of 9 first-timers in the field, was favored. Harbor Breeze (Rockport Harbor - Karaoke Dancer by Wall Street Dancer) was 30-1, and Show Me the Way (Rockport Harbor - Deputy Reality by Deputy Minister) was 37-1. Rattlesnake Bridge made a good appearance, and Pacmanstephen (Stephen Got Even - Datsafact by Known Fact) was catching my eye. The load took awhile. The rider came off Flexappeal (Afleet Alex - Spanish Glitter by Glitterman). He was backed out, and finally reloaded. Ironically, Flexappeal was one of the entrants with experience. When they finally broke, it was Show Me the Way who was on top. He was joined by Backdown (Gulch - North Park Legend by Affirmed). Mr. Valentine (Jump Start - All American Blond by Quiet American) was just off the top pair. Show Me the Way and Backdown separated from the pack. It seemed as though the winner would be one of these. But, flying into the picture late was Rattlesnake Bridge. He rolled on by the duelers for a smart 1 1/4 length win. Backdown outfinished Show Me the Way for second. Harbor Breeze stumbled at the start, and did well to finish 6th. Rattlesnake Bridge is a Triple Crown nominee. Watch the Replay.

Albergatti Gets It Done

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Albergatti (Unbridled's Song - My Miss Storm Cat by Sea of Secrets) was the heavy favorite, while My Dividend (Bernardini - Class On Class by Jolie's Halo) was 31-1. Albergatti went right to the front. Chico d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro - Colorado Song by Pine Bluff) was right there as well. My Dividend was off slowly, and trailed. Albergatti and Chico d'Oro continued 1-2. Chico d'Oro was game, but he just couldn't gain on Albergatti, who registered a 1 1/2 length victory. Chico d'Oro was better than 8 in front of third-place Purely Awesome (Awesome Again - Pure Wool by Relaunch). My Dividend basically galloped around near the back, finishing 7th. Albergatti is a Triple Crown nominee, as is My Dividend. Watch the Replay.

An Eye Opener

This one was moved from the turf, and run at 5.5 furlongs on the dirt. This change caused a delay in post time of about 10 minutes. It also resulting in the scratching of Elusive Tara (Elusive Quality - Lenatareese by Broad Brush). The bettors had trouble picking a favorite, with Eye Opener (Storm Boot - Yes Beth by Deputy Commander) getting the slight nod at post time. Also taking money were It's My Passion (Successful Appeal - My Mach Four by Machiavellian) and Hunchun Crown (Dehere - Tree Pipit by Woodman). Featherwing (Rockport Harbor - Tasso Run by Cherokee Run) was 12-1. Our Lady in Red (Pioneering - Apical by Belong to Me) made a good appearance, Featherwing didn't look too shabby. She went to the front. It's My Passion pressed Featherwing, with Soaring Eagle (Quiet American - Testy Trestle by Private Account) and Eye Opener close up. Featherwing continued to lead, but Our Lady in Red was coming, and Eye Opener and It's My Passion were still there. Eye Opener went by to get the win over It's My Passion. Our Lady in Red took third. There was a big gap back to the others, including Featherwing, who tired to 6th. Watch the Replay.

A Derivative Win

The track was fast and there were no scratches. Zoebear (Bellamy Road - Inthemiddleofitall by Proper Reality) was favored. Admiral Rocket (Successful Appeal - Foolish Kiss by Kissin Kris) was also respected by the bettors. Zoebear stumbled badly at the start, and was near the back early. Derivative (Mr. Greeley - Erica's Smile by Williamstown) led the way. He was chased by Passing Thunder (Touch Gold - Chris's Thunder by Rubiano). After 6 furlongs, Passing Thunder dropped back. Derivative continued to lead, clicking off comfortable fractions. Smokin Star (Smoke Glacken - Exploding Star by Exploit), Would You (Lemon Drop Kid - Wood Run by Deputy Minister), and Zoebear fought for the minor awards. But, there was  no catching Derivative, who won by almost 6 lengths. Zoebear was certainly compromised by his stumble, we'll see how he runs next time. Derivative and Zoebear are both Triple Crown nominees. Watch the Replay.

Isabelle Thunders Home

Only the AEs were scratched, and the track was fast. Paulette Caveat (Greatness - Princess Caveat by Caveat) was favored. Debuting Bellamy Star (Bellamy Road - Swift Star by Theatrical (IRE)) was respected at 3-1. Line It Up (Forest Wildcat - Danzig Point by Point Given) looked good on the track. Bellamy Star acted up at the load. Love Like Ours (Medallist - Wise Love by Dixieland Band) emerged from the pack to take the lead, with Line It Up pressing her. Isabelle's Thunder (Mineshaft - Thunder Sands by Level Sands) was in the mix, and Bellamy Star wasn't far off. Love Like Ours continued to lead into the stretch, but Line It Up was getting closer, and Isabelle's Thunder was still there. Also starting to rally was favorite Paulette Caveat. Isabelle's Thunder came between horses to snag the win at 46-1. Line It Up, whose jockey lost the whip, was just behind in second, and Paulette Caveat was right there in third. Bellamy Star tired and finished 11th, beating just one. Watch the Replay.

It's a Grand Old Game

Grandmas Piano Man (Aisle - Grand Piano by Suave Prospect) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. Grand Old Game (Grand Slam - National Pastime by Polish Numbers) was the heavy favorite. Rock N Heart (Rockport Harbor - Prohibido Olividar by Mister Jolie) was 9-1. Postal Surprise (Polish Ride - Baccata's Surprise by Allen's Prospect) went to the lead. Cat Fan (Forest Wildcat - Boom Bah Yay by Rahy) and Sharp Heart (Rimrod - Sharp Code by Lost Code) flashed speed as well. Grand Old Game soon got involved as well. Grand Old Game, Cat Fan, and Postal Surprise all hit the line together. A head and a neck separated first from third. Fourth-place H W Goodie (Tenpins - Fappadoon by Knockadoon) was almost 9 lengths behind the leading trio.
